Weymouth & Portland Monopoly Pass GO
in ‘spectacular style’ this Friday
Just one very small roll of the dice away now:
The brand new official customised MONOPOLY board for Weymouth and
Portland is to be launched in “spectacular style” Friday 26th October 2012 –
174 ft atop the rotating SEA LIFE Tower looking down on a gigantic SIX FOOT
HIGH ‘Mr MONOPOLY’ made from Weymouth’s golden sand.
The dramatic double launch – atop the Tower and the unveiling of the Mr
MONOPOLY – will signal and mark the region as ‘Passing GO’.
It is believed to be the very first time that an official Mr MONOPOLY has been made
of sand anywhere in the world, say the game’s makers Winning Moves UK.
The gigantic (SIX FOOT in size approx) Mr MONOPOLY sandman will be unveiled –
publicly – on Weymouth Beach at 10.30am on Friday. Just before, at 10am at the
top of the Tower (as big as 25 red telephone boxes piled on top of each other!) a
giant five foot square replica of the MONOPOLY: Weymouth and Portland board will
also be unveiled.
The whole of Weymouth and Portland is being invited to come along to Weymouth
Beach at the Pavilion end for the 10.30am unveiling.
“A Day of Celebration,” declares Dan ‘The MONOPOLY Man’ Taylor, co-creator of
At both launch ceremonies (atop the Tower ; the Beach) will be: The board’s two
creators Mr Taylor and Ashleen Lavender; Cllr. Ian Bruce, Weymouth and Portland
Borough Council Brief holder for Tourism and Culture and Raquel Cubillo, Marketing
Manager of Weymouth SEA LIFE Tower.
At the same time as the launch the game will hit shop shelves – actual and virtual.
And Winning Moves already report inquiries from ex-pats living and working
overseas from as far as Australia, New Zealand, US and China. So as with a certain
recent event Weymouth & Portland yet again is being showcased across the globe!
All those launching the game will be wearing trademark MONOPOLY top hats. There
will also be giant green dice and top hats.
Dan Taylor is MONOPOLY Manager for London-based Winning Moves UK, makers
of the board under license from Hasbro. Ashleen Lavender, Product Developer at
Winning Moves UK.
Mr Taylor adds: “The board is a celebration of the region’s wonderful crown jewels.”
Ian Bruce, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council Brief holder for Tourism and
Culture says: “We are delighted the makers of MONOPOLY have chosen our
beautiful borough as the location for its iconic board game. This is yet another
example of how the international profile of this beautiful part of Dorset is becoming
legendary around the world. “
Mr MONOPOLY is being painstakingly sculpted by SandWorld’s Mark Anderson and
David Hicks. Mark says:
“We are delighted to have been asked to create this iconic centre-piece of one of the
world’s most popular and fun family board games, and thrilled that SANDWORLD is
featuring on the board in on its very own property site!”.
In May when news that a board would be produced was announced, the Weymouth
and Portland public was invited to vote as to which regional property landmarks
should be selected to swap places with the famous London sites and sights.
In all 31 Weymouth and Portland landmarks appear on the new customised board in
ten different sets. There are lots of other customised twists too including very many
tweaked Community Chest and Chance cards with a decidedly Weymouth and
Portland flavour and feel. One pays you twenty-five MONOPOLY dollars for building
a prize sandcastle on Weymouth Beach, with another fining you heavily for dropping
litter on Chesil Beach.
The spirit and shape of this customised edition remains the same as with the
traditional MONOPOLY board game – so, for example, the playing pieces stay the
same as does money in the same denomination.
The new MONOPOLY: Weymouth and Portland Edition will be available at all good
toy and book stores as well as extensively online.
MONOPOLY first hit shop shelves in the US in 1935. It is now played in 111
countries and enjoyed in 43 different languages.
