THE SILENT CULTURE
To demonstrate your understanding of the impact and significance of “the silent culture” during the turn-of-
the-century time period (1880s – 1920s), choose one of the following assignments to complete. Each
option is worth a different point value.
OPTION 1: Tolerance Posters (med. - high creativity; med.- high artistic ability); 40 Points
Draw a public service announcement (PSA) poster making a plea for tolerance for one of the
minority groups highlighted in this chapter (8:3)
Posters can be all text (like a phrase or catchy slogan) or a combination of phrase and
illustration.
Posters are to be POWERFUL, colorful, thoughtful, emotional & make people want to eradicate
discrimination & segregation for the good of American society; Poster must include reference to
a minimum of 4 of the following: Jim Crow laws, poll tax, grandfather clause, literacy test, racial
etiquette, Plessy v. Ferguson, lynching, segregation, separate but equal doctrine.

Asses the value or importance of such a campaign.

OPTION 2: Acrostic Poems (low - med. creativity; low artistic ability); 25 Points
Choose 1 of the following words to write an acrostic poem for: Discriminate, Prejudice,
Segregate
The word is printed vertically on the page in large bold letters; each letter of the word is used in
the construction of phrases or sentences to define/describe/reflect the word & demonstrate its
negative effect on American society during this time period (1880s – 1920s)
Poems are to be descriptive, historically accurate & demonstrate depth of knowledge; Poems
must include reference to a minimum of 4 of the following: Jim Crow laws, poll tax, grandfather
clause, literacy test, racial etiquette, Plessy v. Ferguson, lynching, segregation, separate but
equal doctrine.
Poems need to flow; not choppy unrelated lines or single word lines; See example below

Poems are to be neat & the letters of the chosen word should stand out on the page; color
always enhances work product!
