2. JOB PURPOSE
    Provide a general porter service to support staff and General Practitioners in delivering an effective,
    efficient and high quality service to the users of Tollcross Health Centre.


3. DIMENSIONS
     Approximately 80 members of staff work in Tollcross Health Centre
     2 General Practices operate from the health centre
     Outreach Clinics operate including Physiotherapy, Dietetic, Podiatry, Smoking Cessation and
      Community Mental Health Nurse Services
     The Health centre is also base for South Central Community Health Visitors, District Nurses,
      smoking Cessation workers, Primary Care CPN’s and Midwives.

5. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT
To provide operational management to ensure the smooth and effective operation of the health centres
to enable a high quality and safe environment appropriate to the delivery of health care services for the
population of the South Central Edinburgh Locality.

6. KEY RESULT AREAS
1. Work closely with the community team and practice team colleagues to create a pleasant,
   friendly and efficient service to patients, staff and visitors
2. Receive supplies delivered to Tollcross Health Centre, distributing as appropriate on a timely
   basis and responding immediately to calls from Community Reception / staff regarding any
   ad hoc requests, ensuring a quality service is provided to all staff.
3. Provide a comprehensive mail service to all users of Tollcross Health Centre on a daily basis
   ensuring mail is sorted correctly and that external mail is correctly priced and delivered to the
   post office.
4. Provide an environmental and health & safety service to Tollcross Health Centre on a daily
   basis ensuring internal and external areas are kept to a high standard of cleanliness and that
   all property failures and defects are immediately reported to the Estates Department. Monitor
   car parking arrangements.
5. Prepare for collection and disposal of all waste to Tollcross Health Centre on a daily and
   weekly basis ensuring safe storage and segregation prior to collection.
6. Ensure adequate supplies of bags for clinical and confidential waste and sharps containers
   are available, replacing sharps containers in all clinical areas on a weekly basis.
7. Record and bag laundry on a weekly basis and ensure supplies are always readily available
   to departments and Practices.
8. Maintain adequate levels of stationery, syringes, needles and any other relevant supplies for
   GP Practices and Treatment Room.
9. Test and record fire alarm and break glass points on a weekly basis, immediately reporting
   all faults to ensure the service is operational.
10. Support users of the health centre on an ad hoc basis by setting up rooms for
    meetings/clinics, delivering food, removal of catering waste, monthly cleaning of toys
    ensuring a quality service is provided and infection control procedures followed.
11. Provide immediate response to all fire alerts, panic alarms, major incidents, bomb threats or
    any other emergency situations and inform Health Centre/Practice Manager with any
    security issue.
12. Immediately clean any body spillage within specific areas using protective clothing and
    following the full Infection Control Procedure to ensure a clean and healthy environment for
    patients, staff and visitors.
13. Cover sickness and annual leave for other two Porters.
14. Ensure smooth running of Health Centre, performing any other duties within the scope of the
    post, as requested by the Health Centre Manager.

Postholder is assigned routine, non routine and ad hoc work via Health Centres Manager
Postholder receives ad hoc work via Community Reception
Review of work will be ongoing by Health Centres Manager and via annual appraisal


9. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
   Prioritising work load and organising own day to day tasks
   Use initiative as required
   Reporting of premises faults
   Stock ordering when supplies reach a specific level
   Communication in emergency situations

10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB
     Dealing with a range of requests from many members of staff.
     Dealing with aggressive patients on an occasional basis who may use verbal abusive behaviour.

11. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS
    Internal:
     Daily with community team colleagues i.e. Community Receptionists and nursing staff
     Daily with all staff, GPs and Health Centres Manager
     Estates Department regarding failure of services
     Procurement Stores to chase up supplies
     Laundry Services when delivery not received
    External:
     Local Council regarding waste disposal
12. PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB

Physical Skills:
Manipulating wheelchairs

Physical Demands:
Frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for short periods when moving furniture, trolleys,
waste bags, stores supplies and patients in wheelchairs.

Mental Demands:
Interruptions to deal with emergencies
Constantly changing priorities.

Emotional Demands
Daily exposure working with difficult and abusive clients

Working Conditions:
  Daily exposure to dirt, dust, smells
  Occasional exposure to body fluids



13. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB
       To be able to work in a flexible manner
