									Award Application Information and Procedures
2013 AASA Women in School Leadership Award
The AASA Women in School Leadership Award, sponsored by Farmers Insurance and AASA, pays tribute
to the talent, creativity, and vision of outstanding women educational administrators in the nation’s
public schools.

Any female superintendent, assistant superintendent, aspiring superintendent, central-office director,
school principal or other school system leader in the United States who plans to continue in the
profession may apply. The AASA Women in School Leadership Award program is designed to recognize
the exceptional leadership of active, front-line female administrators who are making a difference in the
lives of students every day.

Selection Criteria
Each candidate is judged on the following criteria:
• Leadership for Learning – creativity in successfully meeting the needs of students in her school,
• Communication – strength in both personal and organizational communication.
• Professionalism – constant improvement of administrative knowledge and skills, while providing
    motivation to others on the education team.
• Community Involvement – active participation in local community activities and an understanding of
    regional, national, and international issues.

Application Procedure
 The application may be downloaded from www.aasa.org/WomensLeadership.aspx
 Each candidate must complete the application fully.
 The application must be typed or computer generated in a font no smaller than 11 points. The
   answer to each question may be no longer that one page.
 Submit one original application complete with all information and three (3) copies redacted to
   eliminate all references to the applicant’s name and school district. Three-hole punch the original
   application and 3 copies.
 Each candidate should submit the application and copies only. Do not include copies of a resume,
   photographs, extra references, binders, plastic sleeves, pocket folders or other extraneous materials
   with the application. The judges will not consider these materials in the award selection process.

Selection Process
• A panel of judges will select four finalists for the AASA Women in School Leadership Award.
    The panel of judges is composed of distinguished leaders in education. The panel’s decision will be
    based on the written applications and supporting documents.
• The judges will interview the four finalists at the Women in School Leadership Forum, co-sponsored
    by AASA and the Association of California School Administrators. The Forum will be held in Newport
    Beach, Calif., Sept. 27-28, 2012. Judges will select two recipients of the 2013 AASA Women in School
    Leadership Award: One recipient will represent the superintendent/assistant superintendent
   category and one recipient will represent the central-office administrator, school-based
   principal/specialist category.

 All applicants will be recognized and the finalists will be announced at an event provided by Farmers
   Insurance Group at the AASA/ACSA Women in School Leadership Forum in Newport Beach, Calif.,
   Sept. 27-28, 2012.
 The AASA Women in School Leadership Award recipients will be recognized at the AASA National
   Conference on Education in Los Angeles, Calif., Feb. 21-23, 2013.
    Each award recipient will receive $1,000.
