Guided Reading Planning Sheet
Planning for Level 2B
Text title: All In One Piece, Jill Murphy, Walker Books (session 1)
Reading targets – Illustrative Target Statements for Reading
Main: Make simple inferences about thoughts and feelings and reasons for actions.
Secondary: Identify key themes and discuss reasons for events in stories.
19. Go beyond own experiences or general impression and refer to text to explain meaning (AF 3, 4, 5, 6)
Phases of guided Teaching points
Book introduction Study front cover. Discuss meaning of title.
Why do you think the illustrator has put stars on the front cover?
Who is the author? Is this located where you would expect it to be? Why
do you think it is written there?
Strategy check Brief session focusing on ‘ea’ vowel digraph. Shared reading of ‘ea’
words taken from text, e.g. ready, tea, year, sneaked, beads.
Which word is the odd-one-out? Do we know any other words which
would we could group with this one? Do they have anything in common?
Independent Pose questions prior to reading:
reading 1. How do the children feel during the part of the story we read? How do
their feelings change? Think about the reasons for their feelings and
what makes them change.
2. How does Mrs Large feel during the part of the story we read? How
does her feelings change? Think about the reasons for their feelings
and what makes them change.
Prompt pupils to use pictures to support their responses to the questions
(and their reading), looking at the expressions of the characters.
Pupils read to the end of the 6th page of text (…toys they could cram into
her new tights.)
Listen to individuals and use appropriate prompts to encourage problem
Returning to the Discuss questions set for independent reading as a group. For one of the
text children and the Mrs Large have a laminated image in the middle of an
A3 page and annotate how the character feels at different points in the
first half of the story. Refer to the story as annotate sheet, finding
evidence in text/images.
When noting characters’ feelings ensure that reasons for those feelings
are fully discussed.
Response to the Has something similar ever happened in your home? Was someone
text interrupted when they were doing something important or getting ready?
What happened in the end? How was everything sorted out?
Next steps Independently, or in pairs, complete the main ‘returning to text’ activity for
one of the other children.
Independent reading of one of the other ‘Large Family’ books (Five
Minutes’ Peace, A Piece of Cake, A Quiet Night In).
