Solar Vehicle Lesson Plan Overview: In this lesson students will design, construct, and test a solar vehicle. Objectives The students will: Design a solar vehicle. Use a solar cell, gears, an electric motor, and other components to construct and test a solar vehicle. Test a solar vehicle and make design changes based on test results. Write a scientific report describing hypotheses behind the solar vehicle design, test results, and conclusions regarding optimal solar vehicle design. Require materials and equipment 2 large, rear wheels 2 small, front wheels 2 axles Two straws Pinion gears (motor gears) Drive gear (axle gears) Motor Balsa sheet Solar panel Adhesive tape, double-sided Craft knife or scissors Hot glue gun Lesson Outline: Distribute required materials and equipment, Solar Vehicle Construction Instructions, and Solar Vehicle Challenge Sheets. Have student follow the instruction in the Solar Vehicle Construction Instructions, and Solar Vehicle Challenge Sheets. Require students to design vehicle before beginning construction. Allow students to redesign after initial testing. Race the vehicles after final construction. Provide students at least one day to write report and presentation.
