DIBELS Sub-Tests Benchmark Goal Your Student’s Score
Letter Naming Fluency
(Naming upper and lower case 40 letters per minute
letters as they appear on the page)
(Separating the sounds that make up 35 sounds per minute
a word) Example: cat = /c/ /a/ /t/
Nonsense Word Fluency
(Reading two or three letter make 25 words per minute
believe words with short vowel sounds)
What does this mean? Students who are at benchmark goals or above are on target for grade
level material. Benchmark students should continue reading practice every night and guided
support will be provided in the classroom.
Students who are below benchmark need additional reading time. This requires a
partnership between the teacher, the student, and the parent or guardian. Everyone has to do
what can be done to help the student attain success.
What can I do at home to help my child excel?
1. Practice identifying upper and lower case letters (in order and out of order).
2. Go over the sounds that each letter makes. Ask your child’s teacher or the
Reading Coach if you are unsure of the sounds. They will GLADLY assist
3. Ask your child to tell you the sounds they hear in some words you choose.
Example: Tell me the sounds in rat? mouth? head? shoe? pit?
4. Read to your child. Read with your child. Have your child read to you- if he or
she is able to do so.
These are a few suggestions. Choose whichever works for your child’s need. The
most important thing is that we prepare the students to become successful lifelong
learners!! Readers are leaders!
The next DIBELS Assessment for your child will be in the fall. Test dates will be in late August or
early September NEXT YEAR. The goals for your student will be: Letters (37), Phoneme Seg. (35),
Nonsense Words (24).
