NEWSLETTER No 22 THURSDAY 24 JULY 2008
Hello, I’m Glenda Schubert and this term I have joined Lynn
Norman in the Assistant Principal role. I have been teaching for
over 25 years and come from a position at Narre Warren South
Prep-12 College. My background is in classroom teaching although
much of my teaching practice has been in Special Education,
working with children with learning difficulties, gifted children and
I am very excited about joining the team here at Mt Waverley Primary and look forward
to working with such a committed staff and school community. I have had a lovely
reception from the children and look forward to getting to know them.
Mt Waverley has such a long history and has always been a wonderful school and as a
past student myself back in the late 60’s and early 70’s, I am excited about once again
being part of the school community. I visited the school during the Centenary with one
of my brothers and we had a terrific time on our trip down memory lane, locating old
friends and ourselves in the photos and catching up with teachers and former students.
We certainly appreciated all the hard work that was undertaken in an effort to celebrate
such a significant milestone.
I certainly have come to the school at a very exciting time with the building program.
There is no doubt our new facilities will be second to none and it gives us a wonderful
opportunity to continue to provide our students with an innovative and challenging
educational program. I have had the opportunity to meet many parents already and
invite you all to visit or contact me, as I look forward to partnering with you to assist in
the education of your children Glenda Schubert, Assistant Principal

IN SUPPORT OF SUSSEX HEIGHTS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Discussion was held at Monday night’s School Council meeting around the community desire to support
Sussex Heights Primary School in re-establishing itself in the aftermath of the recent, devastating school
fire. I was able to report the Monash Network of Schools (39 in all), have decided to seek a donation from
each of their respective School Councils. This will provide Sussex Heights with instant access to funds to
purchase much needed student supplies and equipment. Council discussion resulted in the decision to hold
a free dress day and our theme will be ‘Sporting Colours’ on the 7th August, with all funds raised being
donated to Sussex Heights. I am delighted to say that council will donate additional funds to bring our school
contribution to $5000. This is a magnificent gesture on behalf of our community in support of another in
need. Please note that the contribution will not be sourced from the school’s fundraising efforts, but will be
drawn from other budget areas.
‘BIG DAY OUT’
Each year Principals from across the state are brought together at the Melbourne Convention Centre for the
‘Big Day Out’. This day provides a one day opportunity for all state school Principals to hear first hand about
current international educational research, trends and initiatives. This year professor Geoff Masters, CEO of
the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) will deliver the keynote address. Professor Richard
Elmore will again contribute to the discussion. The focus of the day will be to progress thinking and
understanding of high quality classroom instruction and to further define the ‘Big Picture’ in education.

CONGRATULATIONS – WAVERLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL ART COMPETITION
I am pleased to announce that two Mount Waverley students achieved very highly in the recent Waverley
Primary Schools Art Competition. The school winner was Kassandra (Yr 6) who received a $50 prize and
Binuri (Yr 6) received a ‘Highly Commended’ certificate. Both students were presented with their awards in
Queen’s Hall at Parliament House by Maxine Morand, State Member for Mount Waverley. A brilliant effort
by two budding artists!
Thank you to all those families who are busily selling chocolates to support this major fundraiser for our
school. I am amazed that some families are already on their second and third boxes! As mentioned
previously, the school is planning to introduce a number of interactive whiteboards into our new classrooms,
each of which will cost in the vicinity of $5000. These whiteboards are a fabulous teaching tool that has the
potential to enhance student engagement in the learning process. Thank you to all who are lending a hand
in attaining this goal for our students.
Progress on the construction of the new Administration building is well underway. Much of the structural
steel has been erected this week and the builders inform me that brick work will begin in the next two week
period. The new classroom block is currently being plastered and wiring works completed. Landscaping
plans have also been discussed with plantings to be native based with quite a large number of trees and
shrubs included in the proposal.
