A Newsletter for Northwest Catholic’s Parent Community
Minutes from the January Parents’ Club Meeting
Mrs. Williamson opened the meeting – held on Inauguration Night -- with an adaptation of the prayer composed by
Archbishop John Carroll for the inauguration of George Washington in 1789.
In academic news, she reminded parents that grades for midterms (being given this week) would be posted on Edline and
that 2009-10 course selection would begin Jan. 28. Teacher signatures are required for most courses, and students must post
their choices through their Edline account.
Bishop Rosazza celebrated Mass here in December, and Fr. McHugh from St. Ann’s in Avon said Mass in January. Service
activities continue, and sophomores should be starting their service projects if they have not yet done so. Charitable
collections were extremely successful, with record dollars collected for Food Share and a wonderful selection of toys for
CCMC. We are working on establishing a chapter of the Knights of Columbus Squires; the Pro-Life Club is going well and
the Be You to the Fullest club has also had strong interest. Weekly Mass continues each Tuesday after school, and we had
Mass for the winter athletes.
The Fall drama productions were well done and well attended. The Christmas activities -- art show, dance recital and concert
– were also well done and well received. The “Godspell” cast has been selected and rehearsals have started. The musical will
be April 3, 4, 5, with another Dramateurs pasta supper on Sat., Apr. 4. Model UN and Mock Trial are in full swing; this is
their season for regional activities and competitions. Syncopate, the NWC dance team, had a wonderful time performing in
the halftime show of the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day and will compete regionally in February. The music students will
compete in the Berklee Jazz Festival in Boston on Jan. 31. The History and World Languages trip to Spain is over Feb. break.
All winter sports are doing well; the indoor track teams participated in the final meet for the Northwest Conference
yesterday. The girls and boys each finished 3rd out of 8 teams. It was a wonderful meet; many students had personal bests
and we had several conference champions as well as many students who qualified to compete in the state competition. Other
sports are at about the midpoint of the season with solid performances so far and good expectations of things to come –
check the schedule and try to catch a game!
A thousand thank yous to all who participated in Saturday Night Live, and especially those who worked so hard on the committee. Co-
chairs Carol Ciotto and Gail Riley deserve credit and thanks but everyone did their part. Even in tough economic times we netted well
over $30,000, which is fantastic. We look forward to next year!!
More than 300 students have taken our Entrance Exam, and we are reviewing files so we can send acceptance letters. There is a mini
Open House on Thursday, Jan. 29 and the Exam will be given again on January 31.
The Archdiocese of Hartford is hosting a job fair for prospective Catholic educators here at NWC on Jan. 29 from 4-7pm.
The West Hartford Relay for Life will be held at NWC on June 26-27.
Our guest speaker is Deacon Arthur Miller, the Director of the Archdiocesan Office of Black Catholics and a veteran of the civil rights

Show Your NWC Pride with a School Ring!
Chris Bruff ’03, a sales rep for new NWC school ring vendor Herff-Jones, will be showing samples and taking ring orders at
lunchtime on Mar. 3, 4, and 5 in the NWC cafeteria. Samples are also available on www.ringdesignonline.com (although it’s
cheaper to order the rings in person vs. on-line). A $50 deposit is required when the ring is ordered but the balance may be paid
over time. Class of ’09 rings will be delivered within 4 weeks; rings for the Class of ’10 and ’11 will arrive in September.
Questions? Contact Chris Bruff at 673-8806 or email@example.com.
Northwest Catholic Prepares to Host “Relay for Life” in June 2009
West Hartford’s “Relay for Life,” supporting the American Cancer Society, will be held again this year at Northwest
Catholic. The event will begin at 4pm on June 26 and end at 10am on June 27. We expect to see hundreds of people from
many different fundraising teams walking our track to raise money for cancer research. Luke Pelton ‘10 is coordinating
the Northwest Catholic team; for more information, contact Luke at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please become part of this
great opportunity to display the legendary Northwest Catholic hospitality while supporting an excellent cause!
New Tuition-Payment System for 2009-10
Beginning in the 2009-10 school year, NWC families will pay tuition through the FACTS Management direct
debit program, rather than directly to Northwest Catholic. With this system, families authorize automatic
bank payments from their bank accounts for their monthly tuition bill. This is a pre-authorized bank-to-
bank transfer of funds. Douglas Solomon of FACTS Management will be at school to answer any
questions you may have on Monday, Apr. 6, during the Chemical Policy/Spring Sports meeting.
Join us as the curtain parts for another
Northwest Catholic musical spectacular …

Dinner and a show … What could be better?
Fourth Annual Family Pasta Dinner
Sat. Apr. 4, 5:15-6:45pm
Adults and students $8; children under 12 $5
So we can plan for the right amount of food, tickets must be purchased in advance; they will be sold in the school office
from Mar. 24-Apr. 1. The Music and Drama Depts, the sponsors of the dinner, seek volunteers and donations of food and
paper goods. Please contact Cindy Gworek (529-0005 or email@example.com). Thanks in advance for your support!
And of special note …
This will be Godspell’s third run at NWC, and the Alumni office is planning a reunion of the 1981 and 1991 casts! The group will meet
at the Pasta Dinner on Saturday evening, and then stay to watch the performance as a group. For more information, contact Jane
Leary, Director of Constituent Relations, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 860.236.4221, x131.
~~ New NWC Book Vendor for 2009-10 ~~
Beginning in June 2009, Northwest Catholic will switch to a new book vendor:
www.ecampus.com. This virtual bookstore will sell not only the textbooks required for the
NWC curriculum, but also general reading books and supplies. What’s more, there will be a
quick and easy way to sell books back! Students and parents can click the “Sell Your Books”
button, enter the ISBN number, and receive a quote. Best of all, buyback shipping is free!
Print off the postage-paid mailing label and send the textbooks to eCampus. Books can also
be sold back during on-site buybacks at the end of the school year.
Attention Class of ’09 Parents:
Believe it or not, it’s time to plan for graduation!
Information and registration material about the post-graduation cruise on the Connecticut River will be coming soon.
Payment will be due by Apr. 4. The cruise committee will be reaching out to all parents for donations of money and/or
items that can will be raffled on the cruise. There will be lots of other ways to help, too – watch Edline for details. Please
consider lending your support to this tradition of sending our seniors off to college in grand Northwest Catholic-style!
