            WILLIAM WICKER and REBEKAH
1. WILLIAM1 WICKER, born about 1690 in England and died about 1769 in Leicester, Worcester County,
Massachusetts. He married in 1719 in Leicester, Worcester County, Massachusetts a REBEKAH, unknown
surname, she might have been the daughter of the Reverend Green, born 1694 and died 28 Sep 1772 in Paxton,
Worcester County, Massachusetts, a widow, probably in the home of one of her children.

From a Book called, The Genealogy of Northern New York Book of the NY State Library, states the following:
William Wicker appears to be the progenitor of all the Colonial families of New England bearing this
surname. He was born probably in England as early as 1690, and settled in Leicester, Worcester County in
Massachusetts, as early as 1720. It is likely that he came with other Englishman. He bought land in Leicester,
February 9,1732 of Edmund Taylor, adjoining lands of Richard Southgate and William Brown. There is a
tradition that he was descendant through the wife of Lemuel Wicker, immigrant from Mary Chilton. "Mayflower"
ancestor and John Winslow. Curiously enough, we find Samuel Winslow of Rochester, Massachusetts, deeding his
rights in Leicester to Wicker, August 4, 1732. But Samuel Winslow was not a lineal descendant of John and Mary
Winslow. He and Rebecca quit claimed the Winslow rights to Rowland Taylor, January 22,1732. In 1757 Wicker
divided his real estate among his children, and therefore left no estate to be settled. Presumably he died soon
afterward. He married a Rebekah ___. Their children were Samuel, David, William, Rebecca, born at Leicester
before November 25, 1720; Jacob, John born May 2, 1726; James born May 12, 1720; and Mercy born February
1,1740.

Other records, state the following:
Feb. 22, 1731 - Leicester Town Records tells us William Wickor paid for 200 acres the taxes of S16-D8.
In February 1, 1733, Leicester Town Records tells us William Wicker paid S1-D12 in a town collection. Then
on August 3, 1733, shows another collection for the town, where William Wickor paid S1-8D.
Other town collections are in 1734, where he pays S11-D11, ON Jan19, 1735 William pays S4-D1, then June
14. 1735 he pays L2-S18-D10.
In November 14, 1739, Leicester Town Records show the County Taxes collected where William Wickor paid
S6-D2.
In December 16, 1736, Leicester Town Records shows William Wicker owning "Taken up and had by William
Wickor of Leicester, two heffars one of them a black and white and a crop cret of and ory eare supposed to
becoming in three years old and 4 other coming in two years old and a dark brown and a crop cut of left eare.
In June 1740, to run water into the Town of Leicester, we see William Wicker pay S12-D7. Also in 1740 is the
Province Tax where he pays L1-S18-D8 and then for Constable Goddard Salary, he shows a payment of S10-D8.
On March 1742 - Leicester Town Records tells us Wm Green, Constable collected the county tax from William
Wickor of L1-S06-D05.
On July 6, 1742 - Leicester Town Records tells us that William Wickor paid L1-s19-d9, sundry to William
Green, Treasurer.
In 1743 - Leicester Town Records tell us William Wicker paid L1-S2-D1 to Daniel Snow Constable for Mr.
Goddard's salary for the year 1743.
On Dec. 06, 1749 - Leicester Town Records tells us William Wickor paid L0-S18-D4 to Daniel Snow,
Constable for a two year province tax. He also paid William Green, treasurer, S8 to help the fund to build a
bridge over seven mile river in Leicester, costing a total of 60 pounds.

Information from the Roxbury Town Records, (supplied by John Wicker at [email:
john.wicker.b@us.agfa.com] via email) states, "May 18th 1720 there was a warrant given to Constable Joseph
Scarborought to warn William Wicker and family forthwith to depart this town or give Bond to the Select men to
Save the Town from and Charge by their means and to make return of his Warrant as the Law directs." John
Descendants of WILLIAM WICKER page 2

Wicker's research tells us that apparently when one came to a community one posted a bond to ensure that if for
some reason the family became wards of the town their expenses would be covered by the bond.

From the Book: Some Descendants of William Wicker of Massachusetts by Jeanne Doty Cady of San Diego,

William had tax abated in Charlestown, MA on 03 Jul 1721.

Gustavus N. Wicker, born in Essex County, here spending the major portion of his long life in the peaceful
occupation of tilling the soil, passing to his reward after a lingering illness, 12 October 1895. Gustavus N. Wicker,
father of Charles G., married Miss Mary Barber, a daughter of Dr. Joel Barber in 1836; and the young couple at
once settled on their farm near the village of Ticonderoga, there spending their entire wedded life, a period of
nearly sixty years. Mary Barber was the eldest of a family of five daughters born to Dr. Barber and his wife
(whose maiden name was Mary Smith), her birth having occurred in 1815. She has two sisters yet living, Julia,
wife of S. Wright Dunning, of New York City; and Harriet, wife of Reverend Henry Buckley, an Advent minister in
Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Of her union with Gustavus N. Wicker four children were born, the three
besides our subject being: Julia, who married Hiram Field, and died in early life, leaving one daughter, Lizzie;
Mary, who died at the age of twenty one years, having been graduated from Holyoke Seminary a short time
before; and Joel B., a farmer at Upper Falls, Ticonderoga, who married Augusta Burnett, they being the parents
of one son and three daughters. Gustavus N. Wicker was identified with the Republican party for many years, but
in the latter part of his life espoused the cause of temperance, becoming an active Prohibitionist. Mrs. Gustavus
N. Wicker, a woman of exceptionally fine intellectual powers, has ever been a zealous worker in religious circles,
and is a prominent member of the Advent Society.
Obituary of Gustavus N. Wicker; Historical Society in Ticonderoga, New York. Gustavus N. Wicker died at

for which the physicians called could given no permanent relief.

Notes for Charles L. Wicker
From the book GENEALOGICAL & FAMILIES HISTORY OF NORTHERN NEW YORK, compiled by
William R. Cutter, Published 1910, page 397 tells the following:
Charles L. Wicker, who owns and occupies a valuable, finely equipped farm of three hundred acres in
Ticonderoga, Essex County, New York is familiarly known throughout this part of the State as a practical and
progressive agriculturist and especially as a raiser of thoroughbred horses. He was born June 6, 1823 in
Putnam, Washington County, New York, son of Charles Frederick Wicker, who was born 6 March1790 in
Schylerville, Saratoga County, New York.
The immigrant ancestor of this well-known family was Lemuel Wicker, who came to America from Wales. He
is said to have married a descendant of Mary Chilton, the fair English maiden who came over in the
"Mayflower"in 1620 and subsequently married John WInslow. Lemuel Wicker and his wife settled in Eastern
Massachusetts. Amongst their prosterity are men and women of prominence in the various large cities of the
United States, some being in Chicago, some in New York, Dr. Wicker in Saranac, one Charles Wicker in
Minneapolis, besides many others.
Mr. Wicker's paternal grandfather, Dr. Lemuel Wicker, was born and reared in Schuylerville, and there
married to Miss Lucy Pendleton, by whom he had nine children. Most of them were born in Orwell, Vermont,
where he was actively engaged in the practice of medicine for many years, and where he and his wife died, he at
the age of seventy-seven, and she a few months later. The children, Catherine, Lemuel, Benejah, Charles
Frederick, Joseph, Jacob, Thomas, Amelia and Maria, with the exception of two, married and had families.
Charles Frederick Wicker moved from Orwell, Vermont in 1850 to Ticonderoga. Here he purchased a farm
quite near the village, and continued engaged in general farming until his demise, 12 August 1867.He was a man
of foresight, possessing sound judgement and the practical ability that insured him success, being enabled at this
death to leave to each of his sons a farm. His wife, Abigail Nickerson, a native of Ticonderoga, whom he wedded
17 March 1819, became the mother of three children, as follows: Gustavus N., born 4 January 1817; Maria
Amanda, born 30 August 1819; and Charles Lemuel, the particular subject of this brief sketch. The mother
preceded her husband to the other world, crossing the river of death 2 July 1856. Both were exemplary Christians,
belonging to the Methodist Church.
Charles L. Wicker received a good common school education while living in his Vermont home, and there
became skilled in agricultural labors. From his earliest years he was fond of horses, the proudest days of his
boyhood being those on which his father would tie him on to a horse's back, and send him to the mill. Directly
after his marriage, about forty-nine years ago, Mr. Wicker settled on his present farm, which now gives visible
evidence of his practical skill and good management, being well stocked and amply supplied with convenient and
commodious residence and farm building, as well as the necessary machinery for carrying on farming after the
most approved modern methods. He has bred many fine horses. Of the noted animals that have gone out of his
stables we may mention Black Murat, which he sold in 1852 for sixteen hundred dollars; Flying Cloud, owned by
himself and his brother, that brought them twenty seven hundred dollars; and George D.Sherman, which he sold
for four thousand dollars, being a clear gain of fifteen hundred dollars. He also bred and raised Georgia H.,
which sold for twelve hundred and fifty dollars when two years old.
On January 4th, 1847, Mr. Wicker was married to Ellen Royce, who was born in Orwell, Vermont 8th
November 1831. Her parents Levi and Philomela (Bascom) Royce both died in Orwell prior to her marriage, the
father on 18 December 1839 and the mother 27th January 1845. Mr. and Mrs. Royce were the parents of ten
children, of whom five sons and four daughters married and reared families. Five are now living, namely:
Hememiah, a resident of Western New York, now eighty-three years old; Marcellus in his eightieth year; Marietta
Fisher, of Nebraska, seventy-two years of age; Elias B., of Ticonderoga; and Mrs. Wicker, who is the youngest of

died at Willoughby, Ohio, on February 7, 1890, Chauncey Wright Wicker, eldest son of the late Charles A.
Wicker, Esq., of Bridport, VT., aged 54 years. Born in Bridport, December 08, 1836, his early life was spent

after took a position in the wholesale grocery house of Charles G. Wicker & Co., where he was employed until the
breaking out of the war. When the first gun was fired upon Sumpter, he with a number of his friends and
associates, enlisted in Taylor's battery and soon was ordered by Gov. Yates to southern Illinois to protect the
bridges and other property of the Illinois Central railroad from threatened attacks by those living there whose
sympathies were with the South. At the end of three months they were sworn into the service of the United States
and ordered to Cairo. From that time he was present and took part in every battle fought by Gens. Grand and
Sherman in the West until the day before the surrender of Atlanta, when their term of service expired. After his
return home he married at "Willoughby, Ohio" and came to Vermont, making his home with his father on the old
farm; but the West had charms which he could not forego and he went back to Chicago, taking a position under
C. H. Beckwith & Co., who had succeeded the firm of C. G. Wicker & Co., at the old stand. A few years after he

entered into business for himself at DaQuoin, Illinois., where he remained for several years, afterwards moving to
