thiamine.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

 University of California, Riverside (1999-2001): Performed various spectroscopic studies on
porphyrins which serve as the active sites in a wide variety of proteins. Examined a variety of synthetic
covalently linked, stacked and bridged dimeric, trimeric and multimeric porphyrinic assemblies by using
optical and vibrational spectroscopies. The aim was to characterize the structural, electronic, vibrational
properties and determine the affects of the conformational and geometrical arrangement on the electronic
communication of the macrocycles which can provide further information of energy or electron transfer in
large arrays of light harvesting proteins. Tetrapyrrolic macrocycles serve as the functional groups in a wide
variety of important biological systems. These molecules are involved in such activities as oxygen binding and
transport, electron transfer, energy transfer, and catalysis. Resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopy has been used
very effectively to examine tetrapyrrolic macrocycles in a diversity of systems including model complexes and
proteins. Tetrapyrroles produce intense and detailed RR spectra, that have been successfully interpreted in
terms of theoretical models for vibronically induced scattering.
 Marquette University (1994-1999): The zeolite-entrapped polypyridine complexes of divalent

ruthenium, which can be used as photocatalysts have been prepared and characterized by diffuse
reflectance, absorption, emission, resonance Raman and time-resolved resonance Raman, as well as
excited state life time measurements. The present studies clearly demonstrate that zeolite entrapment can
alter inherent photophysical properties of the complexes in an advantageous manner. An organized
molecular assembly composed of two ruthenium polypyridine complexes entrapped in adjacent
supercages of zeolite has been prepared and characterized which enhanced the net charge separation
efficiency and can be used in solar energy conversion schemes.
 Northeast Louisiana University (1991-1994): A simple, rapid and effective method for the solid phase

extraction of fifteen organochlorine pesticides was developed as an attractive alternative to liquid
extraction. The recoveries with use of the C-18 catridges were excellent for most pesticides. Analyte
concentration by a factor as great as 1000-fold was achieved readily. The pesticides were eluted with
methanol. The detection of the pesticides was performed using OV-17 megabore capillary gas
chromatography with electron capture detection.
 Dhaka University (1984 - 1990): Synthesized some metal compounds of thiamine and characterized them

by elemental analysis and spectroscopic measurements. The chemistry of metal-thiamine compounds is
important for understanding the role of metal ions in the catalytic activity of thiamine and its derivatives in
biological reactions. The thermal, magnetic and electrolytic properties, as well as X-ray powder
diffraction patterns were measured.

    and uv/visible spectrometers
   Operation and maintenance of Ar+, Kr+, He/Cd, Ti-sapphire, dye lasers and Nd:YAG pulsed lasers
   Use of chromatographic techniques: GC, GC/MS and HPLC
   Photophysical (excited state lifetimes) and photochemical (photoredox) measurements
   Use of X-ray crystallography (powder diffraction)
   Synthesis of organic and inorganic compounds and handling air sensitive compounds
   Computer knowledge: Word processors and necessary software for analytical work
