COURSE INFORMATION FOR REGISTERED
Welcome to PED 116 - LIFETIME FITNESS AND WELLNESS (2 credits) offered
through the Physical Education program at NVCC Woodbridge. This course is taught
over the Internet with no classroom meetings and is designed for students who are self-
directed, well organized and highly motivated to exercise. Although this course offers
students flexibility by not having to attend regular classes, students must realize that more
of their time will be spent on class assignments than is required in lecture classes on
campus. Additionally, students must be able to work well independently and adhere
strictly to the class schedule. You should expect to spend at least three hours a week on
assignments in addition to your workout time. You are required to have weekly
communication with me through e-mail although I strongly encourage you to contact me
as frequently as you wish with questions, comments, or asking for advice. Consider me to
be your personal trainer over the computer. I want to hear from you often. Let me know
what you're doing and how you're progressing. Consider any concerns you have
important even if they seem trivial to you. All communications with me are confidential
and cannot be accessed by other students.
YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT YOUR ASSIGNMENTS USING YOUR
NOVA/VCCS E-MAIL ONLY. ASSIGNMENTS SENT THROUGH OTHER
SERVERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR GRADING.
Starting in the Fall 2002 semester all NOVA students and faculty are required to use their
VCCS e-mail accounts to interact with each other. This insures privacy in exchanging
grades and course information by e-mail. All students registered at NVCC will
automatically get a VCCS e-mail account and a Blackboard username and password.
The URL for accessing all information concerning your VCCS e-mail and Blackboard
course is http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart
After obtaining your VCCS user ID and password, you may access your NVCC/VCCS e-
mail go to http://webmail3.utility.vccs.edu
If you need additional help using your e-mail account, you may contact the Help Desk
during regular business hours at 703-426-4141.
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE COURSE UNTIL THE STARTING
DATE FOR THE SEMESTER.
This course also includes Fitness Forums which provide us with a mechanism for
discussing health-related topics and sharing ideas. It is somewhat similar to a chat room
but not in real time and hopefully with more insightful exchanges. Other classmates will
read your responses to the Fitness Forums and may choose to comment on your ideas. All
assignments, including Fitness Forum responses, must be saved and sent to me as Word
documents (file names will have “.doc” after them). Because NVCC has had problems
with viruses in zipped documents, please do not send me zipped files.
Let me emphasize that in order to complete this course successfully you must be very
organized and able to complete assignments on time. THIS IS NOT A SELF-PACED
COURSE. Grade penalties for late work can significantly affect your grade. ANY
STUDENT WHO HAS NOT SIGNED ON TO THE COURSE AND CREATED

have technical problems with your personal computer, you should use the computers in
the computer labs on each campus so you do not incur grade penalties for late
Students will be contacted by the instructor through the VCCS student e-mail addresses
only. Because of numerous problems we have had in the past with students' changing
Internet servers and e-mail accounts, we will only use the VCCS e-mail addresses during
this course. The instructor should be contacted using the e-mail address of
