Why become a prefect?

Employment as a prefect provides many opportunities for academic and
professional development. Prefects find that enhancing student learning is its own
reward. Some find that leading provides them with valuable teaching experience.
Being a prefect in the school is of great importance, they will be students who are a
positive role model to all members of the school community. They help to build up a
team spirit within the student body, encouraging them also to contribute to the life of
the school and to become involved. As such they are expected to:

      Provide a role model to which other school pupils aspire.
      Meet high standards of politeness, courtesy, dress, attendance and
       punctuality.
      Represent the school at important events throughout the year; e.g. Open
       Evening, Induction day, Presentation Evening, PTA events.
      Carry out regular duties as required.
      Attend regular meetings with the Senior Leaders.
      Attend consortium council meeting – feeding back the views of the student
       body.
      Lead promotional activities for the school including charity events.
      Take part in the induction of students.

How will students be selected?

      Job descriptions published on the Newport website and Yr 6 notice board
      Applications list published to staff and recommendations requested in support
       of students
      Students interviewed using the common consortium set of questions
      Students selected using interview and staff recommendations

Payment
Each prefect will receive payment in the form of a £10 book token, paid at the end
of each term.

Prefect Job Description

Appointed by: Senior Leaders & Ambassadors
Responsible to: Assistant Headteacher (Ashley Walker)
Principle staff links: Deputy Headteacher, Year Group Leaders & Head Teacher’s P.A.

Key Skills

      The ability to establish and nurture collaborative work relationships with both
       staff and pupils
      Good interpersonal and communication skills:
      Self confident
      Articulate
      Patient and empathetic
      Able to establish positive, productive rapport with students.
      Flexibility in responding to school needs
      Positive attitude to school life and to learning.
      Participation in school events/life
      An understanding of the value of collaborative learning and different teaching
       styles.
      The ability to contract two hours weekly, attending mandatory training, and
       attend all class meetings of the selected course
      Reliable and well organised

The role:

      Attend all meetings as directed
      Conduct an average of two weekly twenty minute ‘Play Leader’ sessions with
       appointed KS1 student’s sessions, using strategies learned during the prefect
       training workshop.
      Facilitate assemblies by ensuring that both halls are appropriately equipped
       and organised for the daily act of collective worship. Liaison with the assembly
       leader will be necessary.
      Meet three times per term with the Assistant Headteacher and other prefects
       to discuss ongoing issues
      Notify supervisor about problems or potential problems.
      Assist Assistant Headteacher in training new prefects.
      Complete necessary personnel paperwork (time sheets, work transfer forms—if
       necessary, etc.).
      Attend mandatory prefect training workshop prior to the beginning of first
       term.
      Make periodic announcements to the students about the availability of
       services to students.
      Ensure that student surveys are distributed, collected and collated.
      Maintain a professional attitude about such matters as class standards,
       standards, and student complaints.
      Model appropriate professional attitudes and behaviours to students, staff and
       community.
      Act as tour guides to visitors in the school.

Essential criteria:

      You must be a member of the Writer’s Guild (either at Junior, Senior or Master
       level). Remember, you still have time to do this.
      Attendance which is 90% + with no persistent absence
      No record of persistent lateness
      Parents sign application form
      Positive teacher reference
