Alexei Sayle, Germaine Greer, Ron Moody, Peter Snow, Brian May & Elena Vidal,
Roy Hattersley, Dan Cruickshank, Martina Cole, Richard Holmes and Arthur
Smith are just a few of the well-known authors taking part in the Folkestone
Book Festival 2010.

History and science themes run through the Festival this year, which takes place
between Friday 5 and Saturday 13 November at Quarterhouse.

Roberta Spicer, the Creative Foundation’s Festival Manager said, “It’s another
busy year for the Festival with live music, comedy, poetry, creative writing
events and film screenings taking place alongside headline speakers.

“I’m particularly looking forward to Scientriffic!, our new free event for children
and families with live experiments courtesy of Pfizer and acclaimed children’s
authors, such as Nick Arnold of the Horrible Science series.”

Other highlights include John Julius Norwich talking about The Great Cities in
History; actor, director and playwright Steven Berkoff discussing his memoirs of
a misspent youth; Whisky expert Ian Buxton talking about 101 Whiskies To Try
Before You Die (ticket price includes samples!); and the longest serving cast
member of BBC Radio 4’s The Archers, June Spencer, speaking about her life on
the show. There will also be live performances from theatre group The Fitzrovia
Radio Hour, with their spoofs of 1940s radio plays, a night of fantastic folk music
and a stand-up comedy evening with Jeremy Hardy, stalwart of BBC Radio 4’s
News Quiz.

Events arranged in conjunction with the Friends of the Book Festival include the
Short Story Competition, the Festival Read, which this year actually comprises
two works, the Selected Short Works of Leo Tolstoy and Jay Parini’s The Last
Station, the Festival Quiz and the launch of the Folkestone Anthology.

Quarterhouse remains the central venue for most Festival events with Home
Ground café-bar, University Centre Folkestone, The Grand and other venues also
taking part.
