    ABOUT MIAMI
no city sizzles quite like Miami. by day, it’s all about the sun, surf
and sand. at night, the neon flickers in and the nightlife begins.
live music, raucous dance clubs and fabulous restaurants entice
tourists and locals alike. We recommend staying a few extra
days to get the full sun-soaked experience.

    nearby hoT spoTs:
arT deco hisToric disTricT – 20 minuTes from doral
the art deco district is the largest collection of art deco architecture in the world and comprises
hundreds of hotels, apartments and other structures erected between 1923 and 1943. this place
    belongs on your bucket list.

lincoln road mall – 25 minuTes from doral
new york has Fifth avenue. Miami has lincoln road. this 8-block pedestrian walkway is a
shopaholics' dream come true. Crafted in a beautiful art deco style, the street is lined with
    great boutiques, restaurants and cafés.

vizcaya museum & gardens – 20 minuTes from doral
a Mediterranean palace turned museum, this is the kind of place romeo & Juliet would have
snuck their first kiss. the main house, a renaissance-style mansion, features countless works of
art and artifacts, while the garden area delights guests with beautiful fountains, pools, greenery
    and even a maze.

haulover beach park – 30 minuTes from doral
Miami is known for its beaches, but this one’s a little spicier than usual. haulover beach is one of
the very few public-funded, clothing-optional beaches in the country – that means plenty of
lifeguards, clean restrooms/showers, concessions, and well, a distinct lack of swimwear.

COATED GEMSTONES
WITH DR. JAMES SHIGLEY
WE-18
applying a coating to the exterior of a polished gemstone is one of the most ancient forms of gem treatment and it remains in
widespread use today. diamonds, colored stones, and cultured pearls have all been treated in this way to change their color,
improve their durability, or alter their appearance. in recent decades, the application of coatings in many other industries has
vastly expanded with the development of new coating methods and the employment of new coating materials – a variety of
coated products are now encountered in everyday life. this expanded coating technology is also increasingly being used on
gem materials for both beneficial and fraudulent purposes.

this presentation will review the kinds of coated gem materials currently in the market, and the means that gemologists and
gem-testing laboratories have to identify these products. in many cases, coated gem materials can be recognized visually by
use of a gemological microscope, but some situations present more serious challenges to coating detection that is the basis
of coating treatment disclosure.

What should we talk about? With all the social media sites out there, which work best or should we use them all? Why is this really
important? how do i create the content needed? When can i sell on these sites? Join denise and Michael as they discuss how
vendors and retailers can bridge the gap and approach their social media efforts to better support one another’s efforts.

ARTISANAL DIAMOND MINING: CONCERNS – INFORMATION – ANSWERS
WITH PATRICIA SYvRUD AND DOROTHéE GIzENGA
WE-20
a key ethical business challenge for the jewelry industry is the reputational risk associated with the artisanal diamond mining (adM)
due to its social and environmental challenges. ethical certification initiatives in the jewelry industry will be undermined if these
issues are not addressed in a way that also covers the informal or artisanal mining sector. With media reports about diamonds
from Zimbabwe’s Marange alluvial fields, consumers are increasingly sensitive to these issues. They go beyond the conflict-free
provision of the Kimberley Process.

the overall goal of this session is to provide participants with important information on how to address challenges in the artisanal
diamond mining sector.

CG CLINIC: SYNTHETIC ALExANDRITE
WITH JOHN kOIvULA, CG
TH-04
 HANDS-ON LAB

in this Certified gemologist’s Clinic, you will be utilizing a special collection of chrysoberyl alexandrites displaying visual
characteristics, selected to focus on increasing a gemologist’s ability to identify these laboratory-grown products, thereby
avoiding misidentifications and costly gemological errors.

in fine quality, alexandrite chrysoberyl is one of the most important and expensive gem materials. as such, it has been successfully
synthesized since the mid-1970s by more than one process and marketed by more than one manufacturer.

the recognition of synthetic alexandrite is most often accomplished using a gemological microscope as the primary investigative
tool since the synthesis processes used in its growth generally leave behind telltale evidence in the form of inclusions and related
internal features. this is most helpful since classical gemological techniques may be the only means we have available to us to
accomplish this task. Class limited to 30.

                                 FEATURED SPEAkER SESSION

baby boomers, gen-x, gen y…. the differences between generations working together today go
far beyond work ethic, hair style, types of piercings and tattoos. differing values, standards of
quality and attitudes can wreak havoc or they can be a source of incredible energy and creativity.
based on their new book, Generations Inc: From Boomers to Linksters, Managing the Friction Between
Generations at Work, generation expert Meagan Johnson and corporate culture expert larry Johnson
share the unique perspectives of a gen-x daughter and baby boomer dad, demonstrating how
each understands, communicates, motivates and manages different generations found in the
                                 workplace today.

in this highly charged, participatory presentation, Meagan and larry Johnson outline the dominant generational forces in the
workplace and how each generation’s “generational signposts” drive motivation, influence loyalty and the delivery of high quality
services. Failure to create a multi-generational team that is efficient, effective and productive puts future growth and sustainability
at risk. ignoring the drastically diverse ways generations learn and communicate with each other is tantamount to turning your
     back on a tsunami.

this session will provide a roadmap to help you “zap the gap” and ensure the ongoing collaboration, teamwork and effectiveness
     of the workforce you lead.

AT THE COMPLETION OF THIS SESSION, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
     • Describe “generational signposts”
     • Describe the source of generational conflict and the cost of ignoring it
     • Discuss the unique perspectives each generation brings to the workplace
     • Harness the differences and unique aspects of each generation to create energetic, creative and collaborative teams

Few business owners have trouble thinking in terms of business systems for things like building their
product, paying the bills, providing a service, hiring an employee – all the operations kind of things. When
it comes to marketing, however, all systems thinking comes to a halt, because “that’s a creative art”

the fact is, marketing is indeed a business system and approaching and operating it as such helps to
remove any and all mystery about its function in your business and allows you to create consistent,
predictable results from the operation of your marketing system.
