Bullying
A Workshop for Teaching Assistants and Lunchtime
Supervisors Working in Schools

Aims:
To enable support staff to recognise bullying and to work more effectively with the children
involved.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this training, participants will start to attain:
An understanding of what constitutes bullying.
Greater knowledge of their school's anti - bullying policy and how it particularly relates to
their practice.
An understanding of a whole school approach to bullying.
Strategies and skills to work with perpetrator and victims
An understanding of when it is appropriate to pass incidents on to the appropriate teaching
staff
Practical ways to make lunchtime safer and more constructive.
Knowledge of support networks for pupils who experience bullying- e.g. Peer Support
Schemes.
The Training
On average 1 in 4 primary school pupils more than once in any one-term (Whitney and Smith 1993)
Most bullying takes place during lunchtimes and break times. This course is designed to focus on the
Particular needs of support staff to tackle this problem. I aim to make the training session relaxed and
Non-threatening. Training methods employed in this programme are flexible and include large land small
group discussion, exercises and formal teaching. All participants will receive handouts and a certificate.
The Trainer
I am a free-lance trainer working with support staff in London primary schools. I have extensive
experience in teaching counselling skills to groups. I have also designed and delivered training
courses in a range of child related subjects including child protection, equal opportunities for
support staff, communicating with children, behaviour management, working with refugee
children, and peer support.
