L.A. Could Use a Fashion’s Night Out
In attempt to "promote retail, restore consumer confidence and celebrate fashion," U.S. and international editions of Vogue are coordinating "evening extravaganzas" in which over 700 designers and retailers have agreed to keep their doors open until at least 11 p.m. on Sept. 10, (the day before New York Fashion Week kicks off), in an event formally known as Fashion's Night Out. In the U.S. - American Vogue, NYC & Company, the City of New York, and the Council of Fashion Designers, have joined forces to coordinate the Fashion's Night Out event in New York City. But, the question that's burning in the minds of so many of us on the opposite side of the country is, "Who do we need to talk to, to get something like this going on in our neck of the woods?" Los Angeles is full of men and women who love to socialize, love good food, drinks and music and most importantly, love fashion. In other words, based on our city's culture alone, we can conclude that L.A. inhabitants would embrace such an event, with open arms. According to Thomas Reuters' survey of 30 major chain stores, retail sales fell 5.1% in July, making it the second-weakest month for retail-sales in 2009, according to the company. An event such as Fashion's Night Out, could potentially do more for the retail sector, if other major U.S. cities (such as Los Angeles) were able to take part, as declining retail sales are not just happening in New York, but all over the country. Maybe we'll have to wait until October 9, when L.A. Fashion Week begins. Who knows? But if you are one of the lucky ones who plans to be in New York (or any of the other 12 participating countries) on Sept. 10, prepare yourself for an amazing night of fashion. You can look forward to entertainment, drinks, raffles and celebrities and don't be surprised if you see your favorite designer walking around at your favorite store.
