TOPIC AGENDA
• Matter Concept Map
• Read B2 Mixtures and Solutions pp. 23-24

definitions to your concept map.

MIXTURES AND SOLUTIONS OBJECTIVES
• Describe the difference between a mixture and a compound.
One involves physical mixing of compounds and one involves chemical
bonding of atoms to form molecules.
• Know the difference between a homogeneous and a
heterogeneous mixture.
• Identify the solvent and the solute in a solution.
• Explain the differences between a solution, a suspension, and a
colloid.
SUBSTANCES
• Made of atoms bonded together that cannot be
separated with physical processes.
• A substance is either an:
–Elements: made of only one type of atom
• Ex: Gold, Iron
–Compounds: made from atoms of two or more
elements combined
• Ex: Water
MIXTURES
• Material made up of two or more substances that
combine and retain their individual properties.
–Salad
–Salad dressing
–Foul water
TYPES OF MIXTURES
• Heterogeneous: mixture that is not evenly mixed.
–Ex: Snickers
• Homogeneous: mixture where two or more
substances are uniformly spread out
Ex: Hershey’s Bar
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24
• Please get your textbook.
• Pp. 23-24
• DMA: Please find the definition for solution and add it
to your Matter Concept Map.
SOLUTIONS
• Homogeneous mixture which remains
uniformly mixed
–Ex: salt water, gatorade
COLLOIDS
• Heterogeneous mixture that never settles
and scatters light particles
–Ex: Milk, gelatin
SUSPENSIONS
• Heterogeneous mixture where the particles
settle out.
–Ex: muddy water, salad dressing
PRE-LAB: MIXTURES
• On p. 25, read the “Getting Ready” paragraph.
• Write a purpose statement.
• Write a methods summary for the lab in 2-3
sentences. Include what the basic steps are.
• Copy the first data table: “original sample”.
Make it large enough to fill out.
SAFETY AND PROCEDURE
• Do not point lasers at anyone or anything except the beakers.
• Lights are off, so walk slowly.
• When you finish, please bring all beakers to the front
counter.
TYNDALL EFFECT
• Used to test for the presence of colloidal particles.
• Colloidal particles reflect light so you can see the
light clearly in the liquid.
• If the light shines through the mixture and YOU CAN
SEE A BRIGHT BEAM IN THE LIQUID the Tyndall Effect
HAS happened, so you would fill in “YES” in your
table.
• Compare the brightness of the beam to plain water.
DMA: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25
• Please get your textbook.
• Please rank these mixtures by their particle size from
largest to smallest:
• Solutions
• Suspensions
• Colloids suspensions
colloids
solutions
MIXTURES LAB RESULTS HINTS
• 2 are solutions
• 1 is a colloid
• 1 is both a colloid and a suspension
• Tyndall effect is only seen in 2 mixtures.
DEMONSTRATION: FILTRATION OF 4 MIXTURES
• Which mixture(s) do you think contain particles that may be
removed by the filter?
• Particles should only be VISIBLY filtered out of 1 mixture.
NOTEBOOK CHECK
• Foul Water Lab (20 points; calculations/questions 10 points)
• Water Diary (20 points: 10 for data, 10 for calculations)
• Water Properties Notes/exit task (15 points: 10 notes, 5 exit
task)
• Water Properties Lab (8 lab points)
• FLOW video questions (8 points)
MIXTURES VIDEOS
