Ntercultural Verbal and Non Verbal Communication Hugh Fox
Communicate something to this man. It dose not matter what he said, but somehow he let that guy know something. O.K. when we watch on TV, we didn’t care about the words. We don’t care what the words were, but we know something was told to each other and something was told to everyone who watched. All right, what was told? What was told? The man stood there and what happen what this tends to? Did they keep going? No they stop? And did what change? The direction changed, the direction when he did he got in front again, and he changed the direction again, and when we watched this, we didn’t hear the words, we didn’t hear any language, but we saw something, and something. Come on in. Don’t be shy. But something was communicated. In general, in general, what is communicated? What is communicated? Is that you control me and I don’t move, but you move. What is communicated? If I don’t move, but he has to move. Who is strong? Who is weaker? I am strong, I don’t move. You move. So now we are talking about a deal of nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is that without words, without language. We communicate and was this communication pretty important? Was this communication pretty important? oh yeah, oh yeah, there’s a report right now, they said when 鄧小平 saw this on TV. He said forget it, send the soldiers, get the guns, get the tanks, and shoot people. No way this is not going to happen the second time. ‘cause this communicates the wrong thing, about China For 鄧 小 平 this
communicated. That china is weak and pro democracy is strong. How did this get communicated? It did not get communicated. This communicated to America more
than anything else that happened during the time. Nonverbal thing, which is
1
accidental our plan. one day I want to say about nonverbal communication. Was it the plan of this man to communicate this when he stood there? Was that his plan to communicate this thing to the world? Properly not. Was it the plan of the pro
democracy to communicate that china is weak to the world .So, one thing about communication, nonverbal communication, all the time is unplan. You don’t plan to communicate something, but you communicate something. And nonverbal communication can be very powerful, and change history. So it’s important for understanding the more. We can understand the better and specially on sociology. Because I would argue on the hand is wildly ,not known, not understood, and not studied .So, this is a little area. Let me try another one look at this man. What kind of guy do you think this man is? You think this’s kind guy ,nice guy. You agree? Nice guy? We know the secret about this. What do you think? How does he look like? Creative. What do you think? So, ok we have four or five different people. They agree that this is a nice guy, this is a nice guy, Did he talk to you. No, he didn’t talk to you. It’s the picture. The picture can talk. So the picture can talk to you. So how did this man communicate? That he is nice. Body language. What else? How do you know he is nice? I don’t know. How he is nice? He is nice, I don’t know. How his facial expression? What else? oh he got his own animal, so the animal tell you he is a nice guy, and hold toss. And everyone thought him was a nice guy. This is nonverbal communication, nonverbal communication by not talking by dressing a certain way, holding toss, certain expression, he communicated something This communication you think it’s on purpose or by accident. He tries to communicate I am a nice, friendly ,open guy. This is his plan this presents the toys to us this is the biggest toy company in the world. His plan is to communicate that. Nonverbal communication can be planed or nonverbal communication can be accidental. But either way is very powerful. So, we have people are communicated to us all the time. Nonverbally,
2
sometimes they communicated to us nonverbally on purpose, and sometimes by accident. Because this nonverbal communication, some people believe history will be changed. Leaderships look this nonverbal communication and said this, china is weak. We need communicate something else. Soon, immediately by the way. You know
what happened to this guy he is dead, he paid the price. It’s nonverbal communication and I like to make a point the price for nonverbal communication can be very very high. That’s hope not the high but it can be high price, Tell me right now what does she communicate? Is she happy? Nervous? Nervous? She is nervous, So, I said. Hello, She is not talking. We know she is nervous How we know she is nervous? The hands, smile, toughs .How about anything about her body? We try to get ourselves more sensitive on her body. She tried to protect herself. She felt insecure all of this, properly because we are animals, kind of animal. It’s natural behavior. Can dogs talk? Dogs can’t talk that. Do we know can cats talk? No, but do we know the feeling? Do we know what’s going on? We know dogs were happy. What does dog do when he is happy? You know if human has tail it would be much easier. We could know what was going on. Because human knows how to control the tails. So, anyway they wave their tails, so you know that they are happy how do you know the dog is scare, frighten and beyond believe? Actually barking doesn’t mean scare. Your dog put his head between his legs. You know barking doesn’t mean scare. What can barking mean? It could be aggressive. How could you know a dog is gonna bite you? It is good to know, it is practical nonverbal communication. How do you know a dog is gonna bite you? What’s the one dog do that really tell you you are in trouble? It can’t be barking. Because you know dogs bark all the time. Something about the face what would they do on their faces, there’s one thing that they tell you you are in trouble, you better stringy, very quickly. If they show their kin eyes. are in trouble. they show their ken eyes. you
It could be barking, maybe they bite, maybe they won’t bite, but
3
show ken eyes. oh o, it ‘s not good. it is the bad one, show ken ice, and another thing is what happen to their eyes, but anyway dogs communicate nonverbally. we are monkey basically, you know a smile is a smile means happy. Everyone only think about human we smile. we have a privet. We can smile to hide what we really feel, but of course, they can be alright. When we argue this, television becomes more and more popular, more people use television. Leaders who can smile and look like the
smiling, and leader who can do this. I really like the guy. Can I ask you why I make you uncomfortable? Why you are uncomfortable? What do I do make you uncomfortable? You don’t know something happened but you are not conscious about it. It’s our key point nonverbal communication, nonverbal communication is usually unconscious. When not conscious of language? You can’t analyze. You can’t take each word, but most of us it’s just happening. Even myself it is been interesting for long long time. I miss lots of things, but you can’t get training and get better and better. Does anyone have any ideal what did I do make her uncomfortable? Questions, smiles, his word says one thing but his body says another. The first I gonna deal with is this guy gave me hand out last week, he tried to find this word is commence proximity ,is a common word so proximity is in the dictionary. But proximical is not in your text dictionary, it’s a social science word. It’s not common use approximate the answer is near. We see the same word, we use again and again is studying body space. How close? How near? Basically I like to teach this deification, I think we need to know this. Every human beings know this, put words with this. When I get close to somebody or when I further from somebody. What does this communicate? I get close to what? Why do I get close to somebody? Why do I get close to something? I get closer maybe to communicate. Let’s go back to expert nonverbal communication. The dog the dog is better nonverbal communication than human beings. They know more about nonverbal communication than we do. They don’t have any language, so I guess
4
that’s why they take more advantage. They know more expression than you do. What kind of things gonna happen. If I get near dog. What can happen to a dog if I get near. I get near mean? Wave his tail and look at my face ,and say ok you come closer to me, and I come closer to you, but if I come near ,and he starts barking. What’s the dog telling me? I don’t know who you are? What are you trying to do? I wanna make some distance. I wanna some distance between you and me. I wanna protect myself. The dog does the same thing, We do this. Dog dose. Basically when you approach someone is more dangerous. If I wanna hurt you, I have a gun. What do I have to do? For million years before, we invented arrow, before we invented guns. What do I have to do? I have to get close, but now we do get guns. But this biologically base comes before guns, before stuff like that. I want to hurt you. The first thing you do is get close. So when people get close, they can hurt you. You don’t want people get close unless what? You trust them. They are ok. Now we live in a modern world, and it seems incredible about touching each other. I don’t know who you are? they said the hand shakes start with nice. So you still have you sword on. So if I changed my mind and I killed you. It’s sword on, sword, you can’t use your sword, I can’t use my sword. I got my sword here, and you got yours. We can’t kill each other. So closely coming close. We’re going didi or coming dada. What it means? I need prose again. It came from million years of revolution, of being an animal. Every society has a idea closer more intimate. I like friends closer. I like enemy is far, and I want my friends closer, if you ‘re good good friend very close. If you are so so friend here, if you are enemy I want you as far away as possible. I don’t want any enemy in my house. I don’t want the person near me that I don’t trust him. Basically if we trust people, we like them near. It’s from society to society. How close? How far? Someone I don’t trust near. Someone I don’t trust. It’s usually your enemy, or your friend. Usually very good friend I can trust you. Of course, you have to be sure, right. Different culture has
5
different distance. It has one distance for close friend. It has one distance for kind of stranger and of course, you don’t want any enemy close. For Taiwanese for someone you don’t really know well. Maybe like classmate just about here. We can think about how do have your arm? Your arm like this, your arm like this provide for north American the difference not that big. So usually Asians Taiwanese. Pretend they go to America, they deal with people who are particular white people. It is such big difference. It’s ok we can get along. We have group called African-americans that’ the distance Taiwanese feel not comfortable with this. This is too close, I don’t even know my father and mother this close. Ok, maybe boyfriend girlfriend I don’t know. Too many people stand there, this is too close. Many different European groups. Maybe southern Europeans about here, northern European about here. Even communicate in the city the main thing is to pay attention. Don’t say everyone that group is one way, everything that group is the another way. My mother is goth, my father is saxon. So this would be that way. Who am I? I am very doubt. I mean my body language. If I
am saxon, I have one body language. If I am north American, I have another body language. By body language, also by culture. So I have two body languages. You guys can’t really persuade, but south American people. When I am with them, they said you southern American. Are you? Even I talked English. Just the way I move. The way I act. That’s something like persuasive. I switched that before I even use different name hogo is southern America. Hung is northern America. But anyway. that’s part of language, part of language nonverbally. So maybe you have the language, the words were nonverbal don’t match you will communicate the fact. Let’s do kind of review. In general, in any society who gets closer to you? You may answer your friends. Who would you want keep far away? Enemies. It’s the same. In any culture? No. So some culture this is the safe distance. Some culture this is the safe distance. Taiwanese don’t want to feel your breath. I don’t know if I can feel your breath. Actually other side of
6
this is close and touch. Because touching is really close. Why that’s close? You let someone touch you. You trust them, right. So you don’t wanna anyone touch, right. So every society has some rules about touching. How can you touch two girls in Taiwan? Hold hands that are totally acceptable. It’s totally ,alright. How about two girls in United States? No, they can’t. It might mean something nonverbally difference. You communicate something later on. You two go to America. You running around and holding hands and later on you shock. Everyone thinks that’s your girlfriend. I didn’t mean communicate that that was my attention. You are communicating that, no matter you want or not. So maybe this communicates one thing in Taiwan. Maybe this communicates another thing in America and you better realize. When you go to a different place or a different city, you communicate a different thing weather you want or not. In south America, I get this all the time. I see my southern buddy male friend, I give them a big hug. I never do that in north American, these American guys would say oh my god, are you ok? They get the wrong idea. I see two Chinese male soldier walking on the street, holding hands. I am shocked and it’s ok in china. It’s ok for men to hold hands that ‘s I agree the thing. But it’s weird, that’s so strange. In general, body language of some military guys. It seems so nonmilitary. Maybe north European background germen, Swedish, Norwegian parent and child might not hug. That might make pretty nervous. Oh, mom you hug me. I would say properly in Taiwanese society. If your dad one day give you a great big hug. You would say, dad, are you ok? You’ve been drinking or something bad happened in the office? It would communicate what? Would communicate I love you son? Would communicate something is going on? Might communicate the wrong thing. How about you get a job in America some day. You have workers all area of the world and the employee tries to be friendly. What’s the natural reaction for someone come here to do this? Furthermore, let me tell you that all happen unconscious. You won’t sit there and say
7
what are you trying to do? I wanna keep the way. This guy invaded my space. I wanna back off. You should listen to me, I am your boss I am in charge. So your word is communicating, you should follow me. What is your body communicating? Back off. Your body communicates what if you try to tell. A student, you should obey me it communicates what? You don’t listen to me, in America we spend a lot of time, because we are culture society. We have a lot of culture groups, I was a school teacher, the first thing I have to learn. They tell you this, you learn ,you learn it. If you don’t learn, you have big problems. Don’t move, student wants to be here, fine. Student wants to be here, fine. Wherever he wants to be, fine. Don’t move. Let them stand where they stand, but I promise you, I promise you for lots of teachers. They are European-Americans African-Americans or spenic, a lot of teachers ,a lot of teachers when African students get here. They feel very uncomfortable, they can feel the breath. Oh, my god. Maybe I should get a new job. No, I don’t like this. So anyway, consciousness is the first step. Consciousness is knowing that we’re different cultures. There is a theory that perhaps Asian-Americans and Africa-Americans have a lot of troubles. One of the biggest why in California basically is that Africa-americans are trying to destroy Korean business. One of many theories is body language of the two groups is almost going to calculate to create problem. A black customer goes to the Korean own business he tries to be friend. So he gets closer the Korean but the Korean wants to back off. The next I wanna talk about is eye contact. It looks eye and eye. It looks the way he said. What do you feel about this cooling guy? He is cold and doesn’t like me. He wants my money and doesn’t like me. Then he talks to the Korean shop boy. We think about this black customer, he is aggressive, he is rude. I feel he is against me. So this builds up, builds up and builds up, and it has some problems. So two groups have very different body language. How to interact very quickly? You
want to recognize this, and perhaps make some kind of training in the school, and
8
wherever. And some kind of the neighbor we can handle this very quickly, body language. I talk about proximate and by language gestures. Different culture has different words about using your hands. Properly first thing, I want Taiwanese student knows about me I use my hands a lot. That ‘s for my south American background. You know, you should practice this gesture. You watch old films, actors use gestures. I would say if you want to be a effect leader, you properly need to learn something about gestures. And one way is to watch films of leaders, of your culture. And look at what they do. Chinese in china who are not in leader position they don’t use their hands a lot, but Chinese who are in leader positions use their hands a lot. I am very aware that when I was in china. There is a little game we have. They said that it was called the leaders. We go to different situation and who is in charge. How do you know he is in charge? I never told you. I say I can read minds. I like playing games. No, I just paid attention with the body language. In my own opinion, the body language of the Chinese leaders is significant different then the people aren’t. The person uses more gestures is properly in charge in china. Posture, we mention posture. What do they teach all the material of the world, stand up, straight, put those shoulders up, you know? So, posture communicates. Eye contact. What did I do with my eyes? Are you used to be a schoolteacher? You know school has guns and knifes. I am the boss you listen to me. I have to be a tough guy. I have many problems of my class. You know everyone has distant problem. What did I do? What you think I did with my eyes? How can I make her uneasy? How can I scare her with my eyes? What is the basic thing and said I have been watch out this guy this guy is dangerous, I am in a dangerous situation? How can I communicate that? I basic communicate that. I am dangerous. I am serious. I am tough. You better pay attention. You better listen to me. I am communicating, I using my eyes communicating. If I look strict to you, and you look strict back, you win. So, I got to make sure, I get in there. Lets go back to
9
our little doggy, and our little cat. A cat does this, just looks. That’s cat doing, the cat is just curious, if I am a mouse. I don’t want the kind of curiosity. It’s hunting behavior. We properly pedicure of the following, of the prove. We have eyes forward. We don’t have eyes here. Fishes have eyes here, shocks have eyes here, rabbits have eyes like this, Eyes like this are very grow at fancy, tricky to hunt. Cat might be looking at the mouse. And cat might be looking at another cat, they are going to fight. But if a male cat is looking at another male cat, we know it’s a fight. But if a male cat is looking at a female cat, we know that maybe it’s not another fight. When we stare at something, we show interest. I am really interested in how to flatter. They say it is communication, you know, if I am in a bar and if I stare at someone again. It’s a aggressive situation, it just tell that I am interested. If I look at her and I want to show I am interested. Look at my eyes. I look at her like this. That’s I am looking. That is show I am interested. What’s different in my eyes? I am looking at you both ways show I am interested. What kind of interest? Anyway, because it’s communication, and you are communicating. If I close my eyes, it’s interesting about what properly not pleasant. Open eyes make eyes bigger. I am interested. It is pleasant. Staring me interest close eyes, by aggressive and intimidating open eyes. Maybe behavior it’s better for me than my eyes open, or it’s better for me than my eyes closed. And what? When we have a fight? All animals close their eyes when they are going to get a fight. Whatever, so, you know. Can’t screech, better yet? the broad’s coming. Better right, that’s not so good. We have already closed anyway we get that quickly you know what is the hard thing to learn? Your natural latency gets to find is close, focus and only see this normal attention like this for you can’t find. So someone can attack you from here, here and from behide very easily. So all the time, people, you get to fight. I didn’t see it. They didn’t see it, because this, that normal attention .So what you actually have to learn is get to fight, keep your eyes open. It’s more important to see.
10
Will you try to learn kongfu? That’s not how you protect. That’s how you protect. This is not natural for people to keep their eyes open, even people study, study and study. They get into a fight focus, tense. They do all the things that not support to do. Basically when our body prepare itself for blow, when we are in a aggressive situation. Getting ready to get hit, hit me. You won’t hurt, hit me. You should be doing this. It’s not natural, unnatural who knows it’s nature. But anyway most animals do this. So anyway, I will say proximity, and I will say two more important things. We can look at nonverbal communication. I will say facial expression, I don’t have time to go over all of them. But I will do that, you don’t wicket at someone. That’s flirt, this seems so ridiculous. If I do this, I am in the wrong genders. What does it communicate? What if humor means? Pretend I am a lady, I know, it’s hard to do. It’s a big flirt. I mean young man. If a woman does this, she says, I like you this way. It is cross culture. It’s not just American, Taiwanese. Wherever, do you think those ladies might be conscious of doing this? Is she conscious of it? She might be conscious. Do you think people might say now, I am going to rise my eyebrows? No, they just do that automatically. But you know, you won’t sit there and say I tick tick bom bom. You just do it. But it’s pretty important. You couldn’t stop doing this. You know, you are not conscious of most of your nonverbal behaviors. But it still communicates. So the argument is well. I wasn’t trying to communicate this. Anyway, you should deal with the consequence. Certainly some people are more skill at communicating nonverbally, some are more skill at listening ,seeing that. It can be developed, you can train, you can watch. I will also argue increasingly as I have mentioned earlier. A television world nonverbal will become more and more important. It’s not what you say, how you say, and some leaders don’t laugh. Because they can’t do that. Like Ronald Regon was an actor and acts like this. I think it is a terrible and horrible thing. Maybe it is natural. That we have a president as an actor in fact, actor is a expert in this area. In
11
general, who has highest level, in turns peek pay? We pay people a lot of money for being a expert in this area. Miss Anemia, people are very conscious of this. Your hair is short, and is deep color. When you cut your hair and you change the color. Will you plan to say something to the world? Did you have a plan? I need a change. Communication happened so many levels. But I will focus on hair as one of the biggest thing. Because if you wanna go back to long black hair. How long will you take? One year. So, I tell you if you cut your hair, you try to communicate something. Maybe they will argue, I just need a change. I am not trying to communicate something. I am sure mom and dad would say why did you change your hair? What is going on? It communicated something to mom and dad. I have long hair long beard before I graduate. I want to get a job. So, I cut my hair. I communicated to lot of people. Policeman gives me more attention. They were curious about me without my long hair. Before that, no attention. They want to know about me where I been? Where I go? And suddenly other people with long hair, long beard want to know my name. They invited me go to a party. I communicated that I belonged to a new community. But I can argue, I am still the same person. I didn’t change at all. No, I communicate no matter I want or not. Clothes, how about clothes? Can clothes communicate something? We spend a lot time on clothes. Why we spend so much on clothes? Because it’s communication, we can say so much about clothes. But something hat, uniform, like policeman or soldier, they are in the same color. You can see them from miles away. What is that communicate? We are together. Caps or soldiers, they ware uniform. If you ware different, they might say what’s matter with you? But when you are free, you can dress the way you like. But tattoo is different, so a lot of gang likes tattoo. When you get tattoo, you join it forever. Maybe I dye hair like a gang, maybe I can wear clothes like a gang. But, what about tattoo? Policeman in Taiwan not allow to get tattoo, which means they can’t participate certain gang,
12
many gangs in America, many gangs in Japan. You want to join, you got have tattoo. How about have tattoo on my face? What about draw my dragon tattoo on my broad head? They communicate something. Would I ask you two personal questions? Do you communicate something of your hair and clothes? Don’t tell me. You don’t. You do. If you don’t know what you communicate, you should start thinking about it right now. The next thing is what is Tung Hai communicated by its architecture. How do you think about clothes? You know, do I look good? You know, good is a strange word. What is good mean? So, what you think is good? Good effect good for the group, so if you are from other planet. You look how they dress. You will think they are strange. There are five guys here. Do they look similar or different? Let the girls do this. They look similar or different? Yes, we see some similar in us. It is incredible. We actually not belong to the army, neat. We put our polo shirts on, the kind of casual clothes. What we communicate? Something about casual, right. We want to fit in. So, everybody here wants kind of fit in. How about hairstyle? How about hairy? Pretty similar, our hair is short. You know nova days, very short hair can mean something, like military. How about the young ladies here? Do they dress similar? I think I see one similar thing, right out there. Is anyone wearing dress today or skirt?
Nobody ,the kind of for me or for an American, I would that culture in America by a man is about fifty ,fifty .Who knows it would signified it, might signify .It is correct way to wear skirt or not. How about hair style? Short hair, short hair, short hair, long hair, long hair, you should attend to get long hair again. It is a whole idea, we are talking about nonverbal, verbal, conscious, unconscious. So, we might consciously say it is a easy way. May I ask you a question? Why did you have long hair before? It was because you wanna save money? It is a perfect example, I don’t buy it, I don’t buy it. Some guys say I have long hair because I don’t wanna spend money. But a guy with long hair is a pretty strong statement, and in the America today, it’s a pretty
13
strong statement. I mean if you go to campus. How many guys have long hair? If you see a guy with long hair. What would you think? Pretty good? Is it good? Why? Maybe you will say it’s more modern. Who has long hair in our society? Musicians, artists. =Oh, yes, it communicates that pretty quickly .You might ask a question what is it communicating? Something called may go over the professional might give you advise and changes you the way you dress, change your hair, change your glasses, change your posture, change all of these. Richard Nickson you know Nickson, right. A president, they called silly president, and he basically got some professional consultants. And they looked how he talked, his tough his voice, everything, and they changed it. He turns out his whole style on TV. He never get to be laughed. So John Kennedy for every reason seems naturally to do it well. So you are aware of it especially when you are on your leadership position, your clothes, your manner ,your posture are the big part of that. You have to deal with that quickly. Because it could be your problem, so, may go over will take everything, they might look at your clothes. So we have experts in this area, I have done this with students for interviews. If you are looking for a businessman job, long hair is a bad idea, beard is a bad idea. But for professional job, you might have a argument. Maybe yes, maybe no, maybe in English department, maybe a literature job, maybe a suit would be good, maybe a nice blue suit with pretty stand uniform for business that might be the wrong thing. So the best way to figure it out. What is communicated and successful communication? Properly is to look at people who was successful in your society, and pay attention to that nonverbal. What are they doing ?keeping in mind, keeping in mind. There are insider, outsider rules. Every society has some kind of ideas that if I am from the society, I dress the way, it’s ok. But if I go to Africa then I will put Africa clothes then. You go to India they would say you are not Indian, you are American-african. So what I try to say is that massage might be a little different, that might not all bad that I did
14
wrong in India. Insider outsider rule might be stand to gender. One of my professor is a dine education, she is a female .We used to talk about this, you know, a lot of woman thought if I want to be taking seriously, if I want to be accepted by a man. Because man wants leadership, I dress more male then man, hot short hair, I get suits more male. Whatever, her argument was well, you know, you won’t fit. You are a girl try to look like a man. She actually try to be balance. I am a female and I am a leader. It is very complicate for a man. I think nonverbal, their rules are very old, they are more than one hundred years. It is very well stylish, male suits are. It’s a giant thing it takes about a hundred years for this thing to move. Hellish we can take the time machine and we can go back to the past about 1930. People might look at this a little bit but we fit in. Ghost is in the dark from another planet, but female fashions where you from changing quickly, quickly, this is very twiggy thing for woman. I am going to be a president , I am going to be a leader. What could I do? No easy answer, the next question is what is tung hai communicated by its architecture? What you talk to your friend about this group then try to say? Buildings, roads, chairs communicate, for example, the room is very different from our classroom, our classroom has nice little road, nice little road communicated what?this communicates that we are more equal then we have famous rough table. what is rough table communicated? There is no head of the table and as I understanding in Chinese society. There’s a very strong rule. There’s rule about any kind of things in different society. So, the church says we share buildings and buildings share us, and the building changes us. China has many monumental architecture. Monumental means? I mean you just look at the stuff and say this is human’s building. You go great city, you go to great world, you feel like a ant walking and walking and finally ,you find the door fifty feet high. That’s communicating something. That is communicating that state is powerful, and you are very small. That works, maybe someone wants to invade you and you bring them to
15
北京,they still want to invade? Maybe not. So architecture. I think tung hai has very different campus buildings lay out of other universities in Taiwan, maybe in Asia .What’s the different and what you think it communicates? What you talk to your friend when you have this discussion? Ok, folks lets go around the table tell something about tung hi architecture, interesting and different, what kind of different architecture? The campus stands out. I think we all agree this, right. It’s very different, right. What’s different about this campus? The church, that’s not small. I mean it’s kind of sample, right. So, we got this church and the church is modern style, right. It’s very different. Students didn’t know much about the campus, so then they come here and see the church, what does it tell them? Without too many words, the fact is the church would tell you what? Some kind of spiritual mission, religion is important now . You think religion is very important, you know, they say you can’t find where there’s a big head, because big head looks tall. So, I try to say is nonverbal, something like this church. If I look at it, maybe the president will point to it and say this shows about a lot of Christian mission. And whatever, when you look at that, oh, yeah, you agree and later on you may find out that’s not such a big part for most of the students. It might be a little modern that certainly, something I think that tung hai is communicated .We try to follow modern practice, whatever those are. It’s church distinguished Chinese western or something else. What is the style from the national view? I will argue modern means international, so this campus will say we take anywhere, we are international campus. Tell me something about this campus that is really different. Ranch, yeah, you see cows not all Taiwanese universities have cows. What do you think something about this university? trees I am not sure what trees communicate. I will argue trees like kind of post modern .what is post modern. Modern means machine is great. Building is great, trees are in the way ,nature is in the way. Machine is wonderful, bird is just taking up space. What you see in china?
16
You see old Chinese thing and very modern thing. But you don’t see post modern around campus ,just tear up everything, just tear up trees, tear up all the grass, just the giant concrete blocks, just put them everywhere. Why waste money? Why waste time? Go, go, go. that modern, post modern goes you know machine is nice. Concrete block is nice, but there are others things important. Traditional thing is important, nature is important that’s post modern. That is critical, critical modern tung hai is kind of post modern place. I think for a westerner. This communicates something, very strongly. Since united sates is a postmodern stage. Postmodern stage is dominated. They run around Taiwan, they are going to be saying this. Oh, Taiwan, no trees, no grass, just building, building, concrete block, and they come to Tung Hai. And at last someone is on this island. So this would be conceptive massage to all of the postmodern people. So, all those people on the planet. They care about the trees. They care about the nature and care about this kind of things, and come here, and say I like this place. They might be very friendly to Tung Hai. Their impression immediately. So, I would say the Chinese language center gets a lot of western students very easily. Maybe they go to other campus and they come here. It must be a nice place, maybe there’s even more terrible people, but basic on the trees. They think it’s a nice place. That’s the massage I give. You are the first one who are talking about the scale. How big? How small? Big and small communicate. I mean big and small are from communication. He is a big guy, watching out for him. Size doesn’t matter, you know, you got zero so the scale is very china, forget that they don’t believe that scale at all. This makes
this, this big. Engineers like gig they don’t like small, big wall, big stallion, all the buildings in most of Asia were developed world communicate. And also this human is very postmodern. American who makes America a biggest in the world. Big, big, big. Once in 1960, people say small is beautiful, small is beautiful and the old people, that old American say what’s wrong with our children? Is the
17
small beautiful? We have the biggest world, the biggest army, the biggest state, now. You are telling us. We are bad, because we make things big. You are craze. So, we try to go to china and tell china, no, no, don’t build that giant dam. We don’t want to do small thing. We want to do one big thing to solve the problem. So again the scale might be make people very comfortable. It’s human’s matter; the new buildings are much bigger. Because engineer took its calculator and he said this little building, this land is not very valued. So, use every inch as you can. What you think something about this campus? So, I can tell you, who design this campus is planed. This is not accidental. This is planed. This is very planed. Nonverbal communication, this is something anyone architecture will fell very comfortable talking about this. Building speaking to us, buildings don’t talk. Are you craze? Ok, what would you think? There is a lot of space, no, you know it’s very strange. Asia and Taiwan beyond believe. Ok, we have twelve million people in this little, little island and look all this space, you are wasting, you are wasting space. You know the biggest issue right behide that. They are not wasting space, they are using every inch space. We are not going waste space. So, space we have planed. Space we got space, using water everywhere. We got plenty water, people might come here and said this must be a rich campus. Because they can waste space, engineer will be going. They could have five universities and this space has one university. So, maybe the professor is rich, the student is rich. Maybe it’s the rich university. I think they don’t know the truth. Some people swear to me Tung Hai is a rich university. Some people say they don’t know, some people say they are poor. It’s great mystery, I don’t know, I don’t really know. But I think when people come here, they immediately impression is that the place can offer the trees, can offer the space, can offer to be laid out of this way like American campus. We all know American is rich, so, you can make American campus in Taiwan. We think you have some money. Who are these people?
18
Who build this university? They can make money. Who are they? They have different view than the people around. What do you think something about this campus is different? Did you see the houses? It’s a classic, I mean this is standard western style set up. When I was in 上海 and 蘇州.I met some of the rich people, they have houses like that. They are beautiful part. So, you can have a suburban system, not a lot of people in the middle of the city can have this suburban system. You have to drive a hour and half to get to the city, right. So, that’s saying something about resource. And that’s also communicated of massage we value. Unfortunally, it communicated two massages. If you have the house, we value you. If you don’t have the house, we don’t value you. You know, got the house, they like me. You don’t get the house, I don’t care about you. It dose communicate that. I would say right now. You can divide the housing to people who have housing and to people who don’t have housing. People have housing that they don’t live in ever under any circumstance. And people who don’t have housing, different view. They create have and have not situation, there’s have and have not. It locates to yourself, that’s a big, have moving on. What you think I think that the space, they give you, tells something about your value. You get big office, we like you more. You get small office, we like you less. It’s very clear space is commonality. We give you more space, you are high. We give you less space, you are low. It’s very clear, so, in china, it’s pretty much six students in a room from here to here. So I think that tells everybody something. You are lucky to be here. You should be grateful to have the space that you got. The resources don’t go to student’s house, you are lucky to be in this university, all right. You did miss on,e you miss one .You just take it for granted. I can’t, is one the really drives me craze in margin countries in Asia. Every place for western European and American, ok, just taking it for granted. How about I wear these paints and I wear mars shirt? It’s that good idea. How about red paints, blue shirts and orange tied? Things should match, right. When
19
you dress you looking at you shirts. You do that, right, hopefully. Maybe you don’t but you should. Who knows? Maybe you should but you want things to put for match. Things should match. Do the buildings on this campus match or not? Not bad, you know I think we could run around Taiwan, and find thousands of samples that are worse. Just building here, I can say regulative is speaking, new campus is kind of library. But most of that older buildings had similar trees, similar size, same pictures. They are all together, the style is interesting style that maybe I would mention. That is that style of the older building. It’s Chinese. It’s modern, or it’s something else. It’s very interesting. Would you say that dominated style is that Chinese style or modern style or something else? Not really Chinese, it is modernized Chinese. It’s not really Chinese, ok, it’s like we are Chinese but make these Chinese new about modern stuff. So for me the massage is tell the best Chinese and the best modern and make something real. I bet if I told the president of Tung Hai he would say, you such a modern American, I wish other Americans can understand this. They don’t see the gate, so now, it’s communicated something as delivered. Communication, in general, I would say the buildings do match the great esteem. They are going to build some other building. That is going to be three stories and a lot of fighting about students got upset. So I think people even care Tung Hai about match or not match. It’s kind of interesting. Everybody builds their own buildings, alright, that’s my building, I build what I want you to build. What you want so. Right now, even be an issue compare what you see in china. You got super modern, all classical, all Chinese factory. You walking around shopping center, factory, museum, garden and the Nat, fact is you get impression of chaos. So number 1 thing in America. When you get in china, they see solider holding hands, and they see all these buildings, they would say, this place is lot more chaotic than I expected and look this orderly. It’s a massage of this chaos it would say I expect this and it looks chaotic. China hate Americans go there. What’s
20
your first impression when the country stays the chaos?
If they were smart, they
would encourage the perception. So nonverbal is really promenaded in tung hai. What is this worth in tung hai? How many people came to this campus, because of
these beautiful trees, and these beautiful campus are you here, because of these beautiful campus they effect you. All you guys always complaint about this, we are not allowed to use a cycle everywhere I feel like this the only place I can walk. What do you think does it influence your decision? It effects me. I didn’t expect to come here, but they sent that beautiful English magazine flyer which I have to tell you that is very beautiful, and I just oh it’s gonna be so great, so I think I am a little bit like you. The campus is nice and green but everything around them you know, since you walk out. You better watch out, maybe you get killed, people do get killed.
