SPORTS COMMUNICATION
This course will examine the new world of communication
by focusing on sports. The intention of the instructor is to
look at the converging worlds of journalism, public relations, marketing,
advertising, documentary and fiction as expressed in the new commercial
reality of sports.
Students will be expected to work on a professional communication
assignment for the Miami Dolphins, develop a paper on a specific sport as
well as follow the conventional readings and lecture format of a college
course.
Readings for the Course
Students will be expected to read and discuss the following
books during the term:
Holding Court by Chris Gorringe
The Blind Side by Michael Lewis
Invictus by John Carlin
The Big Drop edited by John Long
The Making of the Masters by David Owen
Professional Assignment for the Course
Students will participate in an assignment from the Miami Dolphins to
build involvement through Facebook and encourage season ticket sales
through digital media. George Torres, Chief Marketing Officer of the Miami
Dolphins, will visit class on March 29 to critique your work.

Evaluation for the Course
Your grade will result from the following evaluations:
Sports state paper or
semester test 22% Due: February 14
Miami Dolphins Presentation: 11% Due: March 29
Miami Dolphins Portfolio 22% Due: April 3
Research & Report 11% Due: April 17
Take-home Final Exam 34 % Due: May 1 noon
Take-home exam will be given last day.
