 Next Week

Guy Competition – Each year we are asked by Overbury Estate to hold a ‘Guy’ competition. The guys are
judged by someone from Overbury Estate and then the guys are placed on the bonfire for Overbury Firework
Night (this year on Sunday 8th November), with the winning guy on top. As the newsletter is now ready on
Thursdays, the winner is unknown – however, the name will be texted to you on Friday. Remember that the
makers of the winning guy are also asked to light the bonfire on that night. It is a village event filled with
fun, where the Friends also provide the refreshments. Please do come along on Sunday (to the field at the
end of School Lane at the back of the school) – entrance is by donation into a bucket and then you only need
to pay for any refreshments which makes it very inexpensive! The fireworks are also grand.

Class Catering lunch menu – Please note that a new menu is attached for the pupils who take home hard copies
as Class Catering had missed out one week’s menu – 30.11.09 (copies to other pupils were emailed last half
term). This means that all the menus are out by one week after 23.11.09. If you need to reconsider your
choices to the end of term because of the changes, please do let us know in good time (Friday morning at the
latest for the following week).

Please find attached a competition for British Sausage Week, which is next week. If your child wishes to
enter please follow the instructions on the flyers. In celebration of British Sausage Week Tuesday lunch will
be a special bonfire sausage lunch. The main course will be sausages (not frankfurters) and the vegetarian
option will be vegetarian sausages.

Cycle Training – Cycle training begins on Monday 9th November with Year 4 taking the Bronze training 9.00-
2.30pm on Monday and Year 5 taking the Silver Training which will be Monday to Friday 9.00-10.30am. Please
make sure that the children have their helmets and road worthy cycles in school. We are looking for parents
who are able to support the trainer when the children do the on-road part of the training. Please let us know
if you are able to help on Wednesday as we are short of helpers in particular on this day. Many thanks.

Tyre Park – A new tyre park should be installed onto the lower grass area on Monday – weather permitting.
This area will add a further physical challenge for all the children and will be the final equipment to be
installed for playtimes. We are sure that the children will enjoy playing on this.

Remembrance Day – On Wednesday Sundial Class will lead assembly for Remembrance Day. Poppies will be on
sale every day this week and monitors will come round to each class. If your child would like to buy a poppy
please can they bring a few coins to school. Thank you.

Fundraising stalls for Sundial’s African project – ‘Give poverty the boot’ will be every Wednesday until the end
of term. These stalls are fun games run and made by the class and they are delighted at the interest and fun
that ensues. The cost is 20p a go and 50p for 3 goes.

Orchestra – There was a mix up last week with the electronic version of the clubs form which had the correct
form on the front and the wrong form on the back. The correct form has now been sent. This may account
for the small number of pupils at Orchestra this time. So if your child does want to come to Orchestra
please can you confirm this as soon as possible, as this club may have to be cancelled due to lack of pupils
attending.

Team Super School (TSS) Challenge – Our Super School Olympian Larry Achike will be in school on Friday to
run our Team Super School Challenge with the children. Everyone must have a PE kit in school and all pupils
have the opportunity to have a photo with Larry. The aim of the Challenge is to involve 2012 schools by the
opening of the 2012 Olympics. The school name will be added to the other school names on a special GB flag
which will be flown in the Olympic village. Half the money raised will be used to sponsor up and coming young
athletes and the other half will be part of the money raised for the ‘Give Poverty the Boot’ campaign. Please
check your child’s bag for sponsorship forms as these were sent home on Wednesday after the initial
assembly. It should be lots of fun for everyone!

Following Week

Tae Kwondo – The new ‘Overbury Grasshopper Championship’ will take place on Sunday at the village hall. The
school has sponsored a Grasshopper trophy and this will be presented at the end of the competition at
approximately 5.30pm. An attached flyer gives further details.

School Photos – The photographer will be in on Wednesday 18 th November to take individual photos of the
children at the village hall. We will try to take sibling photos too. If you wish to have family photos taken
please arrive first thing in the morning. Thank you.

Morrison Vouchers – Friday 20th November will be the last day for Morrison’s vouchers as they have to be
sent off the following Monday. So if you do have any hiding in the back of the cupboard, please do bring them
in. Thank you.

Children in Need Day – This will take place on Friday 20th November. This will be a non-uniform day where the
children can dress up in something spotty and have mad hair! The charge is £1.00 if your child wants to wear
non-school uniform. During the day, the children will paint a spot on a new flag to be flown on our flag pole for
do something different. Mrs Stanford will be collecting the money in the morning by the entrance in the usual
way.

Other Information

Ofsted Report – We are delighted to be able to attach our Ofsted Report, which has now been published.
The new Ofsted framework came into force in September 2009 and therefore we were judged against the

new criterion which varies, in many ways from the previous one, and this makes it particularly difficult to do
well earlier on as it is such a new process. We would like to particularly thank all the parents for their very
positive support through the parental questionnaire which the inspector said was the best he had personally
ever seen.

Governors – The governors have been working hard to fulfil their duties and support the school through the
Ofsted inspection and the Church Inspection, helping to set up the Parental Forum, further developing the
school worship schedule, and with committee meetings regarding finance and proposed building plans. There
has also been a full governors’ meeting in which Sue Shorrock was re-elected as Chair and Jill Ham was
elected as Vice Chair. Our grateful thanks to all our governors for their continuing support.

Children’s Achievements – We are delighted that there are quite a number of achievements to announce this
time:

Overbury Tae Kwondo Club – Anya, Douglas, and Harry RH all passed their orange belts – a grand achievement.
Nik Papacostantinou (former pupil) won gold in his tag team event at the Verve UK Open Competition – well
done Nik – we’ve heard that one of his kicks was called the highlight of the championship!

Swimming- Christopher and Mattie have both passed their Stage 4 of the National Swimming Plan Awards.
Katy L has passed her level 9 and Frazer has passed his level 6 and gained 100m badge. Theo has passed his
ASA level 2. We are very proud of each of you. All this swimming is really helping during our lessons too - so
keep up the good strokes!

Brownies – Lara is proudly wearing her rainbow badge having recently made her promise. Well done – we know
you’ll love being a rainbow.

Library Challenge – Katy L and Frazer both took part, and successfully completed their library challenge
during the summer holiday – fantastic super reading!

Data Collection Sheets – We are required to keep every child’s up to date details on our computer system and
therefore send out the Data Collection Sheets so that parents can check that these essential details are
correct. There are times when we need to contact parents and carers in an emergency, and this is not
possible when incorrect details are held.

We sent out the details on Data Collection Sheets towards the beginning of term, but are still awaiting the
return of quite a number of these. We do need these to be returned EVEN IF THE DETAILS ARE
CORRECT; otherwise we have to keep chasing for them. If we have not received your returned sheet, to
make it easier for you we have attached another copy. Please return this on Monday. Thank you.

Lunchtime Supervisor - We are pleased to announce that Victoria Ray, mum of Isabel in Reception, is
temporarily covering the post of lunchtime supervisor for each lunchtime to the end of this term.

Brigade Uniform Order Coordinator - Mrs Heather Battson has offered to become a coordinator for ordering
uniform in bulk from the Brigade Website so that no delivery charges are made (orders over £50). If you
would like to take her up on this offer, you will need to email your requirement to her and give her payment in
advance. Please make sure you check the website

                                      www.brigadeuniformdirect.uk.com

For your requirement and quote the correct order code and price. Please also double check the size you
order as returns are not accepted and there will be no refunds for items that do not fit.

Contact details for Heather are as follows:
Telephone number 01684 772453
Email heather@refpoint.co.uk

Don’t forget that Mrs Kate Wood holds a stock of second hand uniform which is very reasonably priced.

Odeon Cinema – We have received notification from the Odeon Cinema in Worcester, Foregate Street that
they have restructured their weekend ‘Kids’ Club’ screenings. The cost is just £1 a child (1 adult free with
every child). There is a choice of films which start at approximately 10am on Saturday and Sunday. If you
don’t mind seeing a film that is a few months older then it is a real bargain. For more details visit the Odeon
Cinema Website.

Fox Saddlery (opposite the Teddington Arms) – Mrs McLoughlin who runs Fox Saddlery has asked us to
include this notice:

“Get Christmas wrapped up at Fox Saddlery – 20% off everything tomorrow (Saturday). Great gifts for all
the family – Musto, Joules and Puffa plus free prize drawer.”

Wanted – Tower Class are asking for any unwanted Superhero toys which they can have to provide a more
positive image of these characters. Please do bring them in if you have any that are no longer wanted.

Action Words – To help your child develop their reading vocabulary Reception and some Year 1s will bring
home a plastic wallet with 5 action words to be practised and learnt. This is a new system we have adopted as
by using actions as well as reading the children find the words easier to remember. The words will be tested
in school informally as part of your child’s individual reading time and new words will be allocated
approximately once a week when they have succeeded three times. By working together we can really help all
the children to succeed. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Cake – The winner of the cake is number 146. We managed to raise £17.00 this time – so thank you very
much. The money will go towards new video equipment for the pupils to use.

Kind Regards
Pernilla Pascolutti
