All India Railway badminton meet
Sashidhar of WR emerges champion:
Guwahati: In the 51st All India Railway Badminton Championships, being held at the
NFRSA Stadium, Maligaon, C M Sashidhar of Western Railway won the men's singles
championship by defeating compatriot Nimish Goel 15-10, 1-15, 15-12, while in the
women's singles event Barnali Saha of Eastern Railway defeated Neha Makwana of
Western Railway 2-11, 11-9, 11-3 to emerge champion in the women's category.
Rangiya bt Udalguri in inter-district jr soccer:
Bokoliaghat: In the ongoing 40th Inter-district Junior Football Championships, being
held at Bokoliaghat and Rajapathar, Rangiya defeated Udalguri 1-0, while Karbi
Anglong got the better of Bongaigaon 2-0. Sanjay Basumatary scored for Rangiya in
the second half to see his team through to the next round. In the other match, which
was played at Rajapathar, Babu Singh Bey and Rajen Rongpi scored in the 43 rd minute
and 75th minute respectively for Karbi Anglong.
U-19 cricket camp venue shifted:
Guwahati: The second phase of the under-19 cricket summer coaching camp which was
scheduled to be held at the NFRSA Stadium has been shifted Silchar due to some
unavoidable circumstances. The dates and other schedules will remain the same.
Games' venues could be two, if not one: IOA
Guwahati: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) secretary general, Mr Randhir Singh,
in a missive to the Assam Olympic Association (AOA) on June 26, clearly stated that the
33rd National Games 2005 should be held in one venue only. In the letter Mr Singh said
"As per norms the Games should be held in one venue only, but if it is difficult on your
(AOA) part to host the Games in one venue then you may hold the Games in two
venues, not more than that".
Top NFL teams likely to take part in Bordoloi Trophy:
Guwahati: Top teams of the National Football League (NFL) are expected to vie for this
year's Bordoloi Trophy Tournament here, one of the most prestigious soccer meets in
National Games 2005
AOA secy denies sending of separate list to IOA:
Guwahati: Assam Olympic Association (AOA) secretary Mukut Medhi has denied that he
had sent a separate list of names of organizing committee for the coming National
Games, scheduled to be held here during November 2005, to the Indian Olympic
Medhi appointed Games' spokesperson:
Guwahati: The secretary of the Assam Olympic Association (AOA) Mr Mukut Medhi has
been appointed the spokesman for the forthcoming 2005 National Games.
SAI fencing from July 5:
Guwahati: A selection test for admission of talented sports persons in fencing (boys and
girls) will be held at the SAI New Field Sports Complex on July 5 and 6 for induction in
the SAI, Sports Training Centre, Guwahati, under the SAI Day Boarding scheme.
Interested participants may collect the application form from the Office of the Assistant
Director, SAI, STC, Guwahati during office hours. The applicants are requested to bring
their own equipment for the selection trail.
JDM soccer tourney from June 30:
Guwahati: The 3rd Joumoti Das Memorial GSA Office Football Tournament will get under
way from June 30 at the Nehru Stadium. Altogether 10 teams will participate in the
tournament, the final of which is schedule to be held on July 9. RBI will take on SP
Office in the inaugural match. Meanwhile it has been decided that the Super Division
Football League, to be organized by the GSA, will begin on July 12.
Rly Badminton Meet
Northern Rly to meet Western Rly in final:
Guwahati: True to the expectation, holders Northern Railway sailed into the final of the
men's team championship of the 51st All India-inter Railway Badminton Championship
defeating Central Railway 3-1 in the first semifinal of the meet at NF Railway Indoor
stadium at Maligaon here on June 26. In the title clash, Northern will meet strong
contender Western Railway, which in the second semifinal beat South Central Railway
by the same margin. In the women section, the final clash would be between
champions Eastern Railway and Western Railway.
Dynamo lift MMC soccer trophy:
Guwahati: Dynamo Athletic Club lifted the IV th Mohendra Mohan Choudhury Football
trophy on June 26 by defeating Assam Police (Blues) 2-1 in the final at Nehru Stadium.

BSA demands removal of Dy Director of Sports:
Guwahati: The Board of Sports of Assam (BSA) demanded on 24th June that the Deputy
Director of Sports and Youth Welfare, Mr Rajib Prakash Baruah, who is also the Officer
on Special Duty of the BSA, should be removed from the post.

Sivasagar: The Zangam Club of Sivasagar organized a seminar on cricket umpires at its
premises on June 22, which was attended by the class-III umpires of Sivasagar.
Dynamo sail into final:
Guwahati: Dynamo Club proved themselves as better shooters by winning their second
successive match via tiebreaker in a Mahendra Mohan Choudhury memorial football
tournament match at the Nehru Stadium here on 23rd June.
Guwahati: Explorers, a leading organization of adventure sports, will hold a four-day
training camp of adventure sports-Summer Adventure- from July 10. Training will be
given on various land and water sports during the course which will be held in
association with the Assam State Tourism Corporation.
7 cricket coaches sail through coaching camp:
Guwahati: Seven coaches have come out of the 22 candidates from different districts of
the State who took part in a four day Cricket Coaches' Training and Examination Camp,
which was held in February at the NFRSC stadium.
Cricket coaching camp postponed:
Guwahati: The cricket coaching camp for the State team to represent Assam in the Moinuddinlah Cricket
Tournament and the Burchi Babu Cricket Tournament has been postponed. The Assam Cricket Association
(ACA) secretary, Mr Bikash Baruah said that the camp has been postponed as both the tournaments have been
deferred till September.
Military, BSF likely to represent Assam in Games:
Guwahati: Assam Olympic Association (AOA) proposed to include military and BSF sportsmen serving in the
State in its team for National Games scheduled to be held here in November 2005.

Guwahati: Defending champions Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) entered the semifinals on 20th June of
the IVth Mohendra Mohan Choudhury football Tournament after defeating Food Corporation of India (FCI) 3-0 in
the tie breaker. ASEB will take on Assam Police (Blues) in the semifinals.
Bhattacharya admitted to hospital:
Guwahati: Veteran sportsman of Assam, Durga Charan Bhattacharya, has been admitted to hospital here with
critical illness. Bhattacharya, who was a State champion in tennis, football and badminton, was admitted at
Downtown Hospital here in the night on 19th June in a critical condition. The 72 year old sportsman had also
excelled in the field of athletics, volleyball and cricket bringing laurels to the State.
Assam to levy cess on petrol, diesel & cinema
National Games to be held from Nov 15:
Guwahati: The organizing committee of the 33rd National Games 2005 will host the event from November 15 10
26 in 2005, Assam Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Captain (retd) Robin Bordoloi announced on 19th June.
SSC office-bearer assaulted:
Guwahati: The assistant Secretary of the State Sports Council (SSC), Mr Pranab Saikia was physically
manhandled on 19th June by one David Chetia, a life guard at the B P Chaliha Swimming Pool.
OIL blank AR, lift Garodia trophy:
Dibrugarh: Oil India Limited (OIL), Duliajan lifted on 19th June the 12th Narayanmal Garodia Gold Cup defeating
Assam Rifles 3-0 in the final played at the Chowkidinghi Playgrounds here. This is the fifth time that OIL has lifted
the prestigious trophy.

4 swimming pool employees held:
Guwahati: Four employees of the B P Chaliha Swimming Pool were picked up by the police for interrogation in
connection with the alleged swindling of money from the Board of Sports of Assam.

FCI to take on ASEB in quarters:
Guwahati: Food Corporation of India set up a quarter-final clash on 18th June with defending champions
Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) by defeating Guwahati Town Club (GTC)
2-0 in the ongoing IVth Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Football Tournament being
played at the Nehru Stadium. The match between FCI and GTC was the best of the
tournament so far.
AATA AGM in Nagaon:
Guwahati: The annual general meeting of the All Assam Tennis Association will be held
on July 6, at the Nagaon Tennis Club, Nagaon. Each affiliated member of AATA is
entitled to send two representatives to attend the meeting. The names of the
authorized representatives of affiliated members should reach the AATA honorary
general secretary by June 30.

Guwahati: Rising Club met on 15th June with their blues in the hands of the Assam
Police Blues in the inaugural match of the IV th Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Soccer
Tournament that got under way at the Nehru Stadium. Assam Police (Blues) in a one-
sided match drubbed Rising XI by a tennis like soccer clearly exposing Rising's rustiness
at the beginning of the State's soccer season.
GSA in a quandary over Govt's move on Nehru Stadium:
Guwahati: The Guwahati Sports Association in its working committee meeting on 14th
June discussed threadbare the hosting of the Bordoloi trophy for the Barsapara for its
proposed stadium and most importantly, a proposed Government decision to renovate
the Nehru stadium keeping in the view the forthcoming National Games in 2005 to be
hosted by Guwahati.
ASJA's assurance on Games:
Guwahati: The Assam Sports Journalists' Association, on 14th June lamented the fact a
difference seems to National Games and media in the State. The ASJA also called for
the appointment of a spokesperson in connection with the Games, who would be
responsible to make the people of the State know about the development taking place
regarding the Games. The ASJA has Also assured of its full cooperation in making the
Games a success, so the prestige of the State rises.

Rising to clash with Assam Police in inaugural match:
Guwahati: Rising XI and Assam Police (Blue) will lock horns in the inaugural match of
the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Football Championship at the Nehru Stadium
tomorrow instead of Dynamo Club and Young Amateur as was scheduled earlier. The
tournament will be inaugurated by the District Commissioner, Kamrup (Metropolitan), A
K Absar Hazarika.
Prakash Bhagat to attend NCA camp:
Guwahati: Prakash Bhagat, a building young cricketer of the State, has been selected
to undergo training in the National Cricket Academy, Bangalore. Assam Cricket
Association (ACA) secretary, Mr Bikash Baruah said that Prakash will attend the
coaching camp at NCA from August 2 to August 31.

Guwahati: Jewel Star on June 16th stormed into the quarter-finals of the IV Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Soccer
Tournament by defeating Maharana Athletic Club 1-0, being played at the Nehru Stadium. The match was evenly
contested, where both the sides had their share of opportunities, but failed to capitalize on the chances.
Sandhu appointed chief coach of ACA:
Guwahati: Former Indian paceman Balwinder Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the
chief coach for the Assam Cricket Academy (ACA) for a period of one-and-half months
for the under- 15, under-17 and under-19 cricket coaching camp to be held from mid-
week of July. Assam Cricket Association (ACA) secretary Bikash Baruah said that
Balwinder Singh Sandhu will impart training to 50 players selected from various parts
of the State.
Gogoi's missive to IOA, wants 6 venues for Games:
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is also the chairman of the 2005
National Games organizing committee and the president of the Assam Olympic
Association, in a letter to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh
Kalmadi has proposed to host the 2005 National Games in different regions of the

Guwahati: The football season of Guwahati will kick off with the Mahendra Mohan
Choudhury Championship on June 15.The inauguaral match will be played between
Dynamo Club and Young Amateur Club. Mr Paresh Das, joint secretary, Guwahati
Sports association, said that altogether 10 teams will participate in the tournament-

Santanu, Satyabrata, Pradip & Sharma leading Sunday chess tourney:
Guwahati: Four players - Santanu Singh, Satyabrata Handique, Pradip Bhuyan and OP
Sharma ahared the lead with 3 points each after the third round of the Prize Money
Sunday Chess Tournament, organized by the Guwahati Chess Association, being held at
the Manipuri Basti High School. They are being closely followed by Sankar Sharma and
Meghnath Rava with 2.5 points each. FIDE rated Rajib Dhar and Mahendra Bora, along
with fourteen other players are on 2 points. The fourth and the fifth round of the
tournament will be played on June 14 and 15.
ACA asks BCCI to send gym equipment:
Guwahati: The Assam Cricket Association appealed on 9 June to the Board of Control for Cricket in
India (BCCI) to send the equipment for setting up the proposed gymnasium, which will be at the
Rudra Singha Sports Complex, Dispur. The BCCI had taken up a project of Rs 3crore for building
gymnasiums and directed all its affiliated members to build gymnasiums in their respective states for
Ranji schedule announced:
Guwahati: Assam have been placed in the Elite Group B of the Ranji Trophy cricket announced for
the forthcoming 2003-2004 season. Timil Nadu, Karnataka, Bengal, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and
Hyderabad are the other teams in the Group.
2005 Games venue likely to be named on June 28:
Guwahati: The main venue for the National Games 2005 is likely to be announced on June 28 soon
after the completion of the "Olympic Day Run" organized by the Assam Olympic Association (AOA).
NCA files case against Bezbaruah:
Guwahati: The Nalbari Cricket Association (NCA), headed by Gaffar Zaman, on 7 June filed a case
against former Assam Cricket Association (ACA) secretary Mr Nandan Bezbaruah for endorsing the
rival faction of the NCA headed by Nurul Hussain despite a High Court directive granting validity to
the Zaman faction.
Garodia Gold Cup soccer:
Dibrugarh: The 12th Garodi a Gold Cup football tournament will kick-off on 6th June at
the Chowkidinghi Play Ground. The tournament organized under the aegis of the Milan
Jyoti Sangha will feature 15 teams including defending champion Tinsukia Railways, Oil
India Limited, Assam Police, Williamson Magor, Assam Rifles and Golaghat SAI among
others. Mr Neeraj Verma, Deputy Commissioner, Dibrugarh will inaugurate the
Dalmiya's Guwahati visit this month:
Guwahati: BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmia will be chief guest in the prize distribution
ceremony organized by the Assam Cricket Association to honour the best cricketers in
the various age groups in Assam in the last season. Though the date has not yet been
finalized but the event will take place this month only.
BCCI to aid ACA's stadium:
Guwahati: The BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya has assured of all cooperation to the
Assam Cricket Association in constructing the proposed cricket stadium in Hengrabari in
the city. He said this to the ACA president Gautam Roy when the latter met him in
Kolkata on 4th June.
ACA names probables for tournaments:
Guwahati: The Assam Cricket Association has decided to send its team tto play some
major domestic tournaments in southern India like the Moinudulla Tournament in
Hyderabad and Buchi Babu cricket in Chennai. In order to prepare the State team for
these two tournament, the ACA has organized a camp beginning June 25 at the Nehru

Guwahati: Former Assam Cricket Association secretary and the man under the eye of a
storm - Nandan Bezbaruah- today termed as baseless the charges leveled by the ACA
on him and decried the decision of the ACA of banning him fir five years.

Guwahati:The piece de resistance of the inaugural T Ao-DONER Soccer Tournament will

ACA flays BCCI selection policy
Guwahati: The Assam Cricket Association in strongly worded letter to the BCCI has
flayed the selection policy of the Indian cricket team both for the National side as well
as the 'A' team . The message , said that it has become "customary" of sort on the part

Guwahati : The Assam Sports Journalists' Association (ASJA) on 7th May felicitated
sportspersons for their outstanding contribution and performance in their respective

Manipur hockey player Surjalata Devi.
Pugilists J Daniel and Kalpana Choudhury were the recipient of the Lokapriya Bordoloi
Centenary Award for Best Sports Person of Assam.
Gopal Hazarika Cricket - SCCA's date with Ankurjyoti in semis
Guwahati : State Cricket Coaching Academy (SCCA) on 7th May set up a semifinal clash
with Ankurjyoti Club by defeating Smriti Sangha by seven wickets in the ongoing Golap
Hazarika under-14 Cricket Tournament, being held at Dispur Grounds.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first Smriti Sangha were bowled out for 99 runs in
Smriti Sangha batsmen were never allowed to settle down and kept losing wickets at
regular intervals, with Satyajit and Krishanu being the man contributors with 19 and 18
Prantik Rathi of Star Cricket Coaching Academy was the pick of the bowlers as he
bowled an impeccable line and length to pick two wickets. Printik was ably supported by
Sourav Sharma who also picked up two wickets.
In reply, Star Cricket Coaching Academy got the required runs in just 18.3 overs with
Manik Sarkar (33 not out ), Rajib Kalita (23) and S Akhtar (19 not out) were the main
All Assam Ranking Badminton - Anjali steals the limelight
Guwahati : Ajanta Choudhury of Guwahati on 6th May lifted the men's title, while Anjali
Kalita, also from Guwahati, bagged the title in the women's category, in the Subudh
Chandra Das Memorial All Assam Mini/Senior Ranking Badminton Championship, which
concluded here on 6th May at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium. Anjali stole the limelight
as she also lifted the under-16 girl's title on 6th May.
In the women's category finals, Anjali defeated Manali Sinha (Guwahati) 11-7, 11-6,
while in the under-16 category, Anjali got the better of Pizza Bharali of Dibrugarh 11-1,
11-6. It may be mentioned here that Anjali also bagged the under-19 title on 5th May
by defeating Manali Sinha 11-1,11-5.
Meanwhile, in the men's final, in a one sided match, Ajanta Choudhury defeated his
compatriot Rajib Goswami 15-4, 15-0. In the under-19 boy's category Suranjan
Bhobora of Guwahati defeated Sourav Jyoti Bora also of Guwahati 15-5, 15-13.
Suranjan then made it a double crown when he teamed up with Parikshit Bhagawati of
Dibrugarh in the under-16 boy's doubles category by defeating Mousumraj Gohan and
Uttam Baruah (both Sivasagar) 10-15, 15-12, 15-12. Rajib Goswami defeated Suranjan
Bhobora in the under-19 boy's singles 15-6, 15-3. While in the under-19 boy's doubles
Javed T Halim and Ankur Baruah defeated Suranjan Bhobora and Dibajyoti Borah 15-9,
15-9 to emerge champions.
In the men's doubles Amitabh Goswami and Rajib Goswami defeated Bhaskar Bora and
Ajanta Choudhury 9-15, 15-4, 15-12.
Meanwhile, the Assam Badminton Association on 6th May selected the team to
represent the State in the North-east Badminton Championship to be held at Shilong
from May 16 to May 20. The selected players are - Men's : Ajanta Choudhury, Rajib
Goswami, Amitabh Goswami, Pankaj Rajkhowa, Suranjan Bhobora and Souravjyoti
Bora; Women's : Anjali Kalita, Manali Sinha, Abida Amin, Krishti Das and Pizza Bharali.
Meghna, Sumana cause upsets - STATE RANKING BADMINTON
Guwahati : Meghna Bharadwaj of Jorhat and her team mate Sumana Phukan caused
major upsets in the girls' U-13 category of the ongoing State ranking badminton
championship defeating top seed Pranali Gohain (Sivasagar) and Rituparna Kalita
(Guwahati ) respectively on 4th May.
Meghna defeated Pranali 11-8, 11-6 while Sumana downed Rituparna 11-5, 13-11.
On the other hand Rajib Baruah of Sivasagar and Priyadarshini Diphusa of Nagaon
clinched the boys' and girls' U-10 titles respectively. In the finals played on 4th May
Rajib got the better of his team mate Jayanta Madhav Saikia 17-15, 15-13 in a keenly
contested final while Priyadarshini had a facile 11-5, 11-1 victory over Pooja Bharali of
In another title clash Nirob Jyoti Bora (Guwahati ) defeated Mayur Bora (Sivasagar) 15-
12, 15-4 for the boys' U-13 crown.
Suranjan Bhobora will play Souravjyoti Bora (both Guwahati) in the boys' U-16 final. In
two semi-finals played on 4th May Souravjyoti downed Rohan Chaliha (Guwahati) 15-9,
15-12 while Suranjan beat Parikshit Bhagawati (Dib) 15-5, 15-5.
In the boys' U-19 category Suranjan, Ankur Baruah, Anirban Chetia and Rajeeb
Goswami and Manali Sinha already marched into the semis in U-19 girls section.
Amitabh Goswami and Pankaj Rajkhowa entered men's semifinals defeating Sandeep
Roy and Abhijit Dutta respectively.
Duliajan boys enter semis - GOLAP HAZARIKA CRICKET
Guwahati : Duliajan Club trounced City Cricket Coaching Centre (B) by 87 runs in a
quarter final match of the Golap Hazarika memorial U-14 cricket championship at the
Dispur Parade ground here on 4th May.
Using the track first the Duliajan boys muster 141 for five in the stipulated 20 overs as
Raja Mazumder was the top scorer with 35. SA Phulari was the other notable
contributor with 29.
In reply the City Coaching boys miserably failed to withstand the tight Duliajan bowling
and managed to gather only 54.
GCCC A enter semi-finals - GOLAP HAZARIKA CRICKET
Guwahati : The Guwahati Cricket Coaching Centre (GCCC) A entered the last four stage
of the Gopal Hazarika memorial U-14 inter coaching centre cricket tournament.
In a quarter final match at the Dispur Parade Ground here on 1st May GCCC trounced
Patacharkuchi Cricket Coaching Centre by eight wickets.
Batting first the Patacharkuchi boys managed to score a modest total 133 in the
stipulated 25 overs where Simanta Das and Sanjoy Kalita were the main contributors
with 28 each.
Chasing the target GCCC batsmen had no difficulty in keeping the scoreboard moving
as Ambar Bhattacharya (58 off 46 balls) were in fine form. The finally scored 136
losing only two wickets in 21.2 overs.
State ranking badminton meet begins
Guwahati : The Subodth Ch Das memorial All Assam Mini to senior Ranking Badminton
Tournament got underway at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium here on 1st May.

New Star win
Guwahati : New Star Cricket Coaching Centre defeated Guwahati Cricket Coaching
Centre by 65 runs in a 5th Gopal Hazarika inter-coaching centre cricket tournament
match here on 30th April.
Batting first, New Star scored 162 for 8 in 25 overs with Rahul Kalita hitting 53. They
then reduced their opponents to 97, with Abhinav Rajkhowa claiming three wickets. On
30th April, Barpeta CCC will take on NFRSA.
Murali Choudhury passes away
Guwahati : Pioneer sports journalist Murali Choudhury passed away following ill health
in the early hours here at his residence on 29th April.

GSA soccer league format changed
Guwahati: The GSA super division football league will be played in a new system from
this season. In a working committee meeting held at the GSA office on April 25 a bye
law of the super league was amended. The league will be played in two phases and in
the first round all the eight participating teams will play against each other. In the
second round top four teams will contest for the title while the bottom four teams will
fight for avoiding relegation. All the team will carry the points they gather in the first
phase to the second round.

Centre : Finalize venues for National Games
Guwahati : The Central Government has asked the Assam Government to finalize the
venues for the different sports disciplines, including the main stadium, for the 2005
National Games scheduled to be held in the State, at the earliest. In a meeting held at
the Prime Minister's Office in New Delhi on April 21 between the representatives of
Government of India and Assam Government, it was suggested that the main stadium
should be situated in the greater Guwahati area so that it could be utilized after the
Games as the stadia as such places will ensure better participation by the public during
ACA plan for elaborate coaching
Guwahati: The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has decided to hold two camps, one at
Silchar and another at the NF Railway stadium in Maligaon, from May 15 in the age
groups of 15 and 17 years initially. After the camps at Silchar and Maligaon, where
indoor pitch facilities are available, 30 players from the two centers will be selected for
the ACA Academy where former Test Stars will impart coaching. After the final camp,
the ACA teams of different age groups will be picked up.

Guwahati : The Assam Cricket Association (ACA), in order to encourage the cricketers
to perform well, has decided to institute various awards from this year.
Mr Bikash Baruah, secretary, ACA, said: "We have decided to institute four awards- The
Best Batsman, Best Bowler, Most Promising Cricketer and the Best Cricketer of the
Year- so that the players put in their best efforts."
T Ao Football Championship - State coaching-cum-selection camp on in full
Guwahati : The State coaching-cum-selection camp, being held at the Nehru Stadium ,
for the T Ao Football Championship is on in full swing. Thirty players out of the 38 are
attending the camp.
Coach Ganesh Rai said " As if is just the beginning of the season, after a lengthy off

Bhanu nominated AOA vice-president
Guwahati : The Commissioner of Sports and Youth Welfare, Mr M G V K Bhanu, has
been nominated as one of the associate vice-president of the Assam Olympic
Association (AOA). Bhanu's posting comes at a time the State is beginning to prepare
for the National Games 2005. The decision assumes significance in the wake of the
Games' as this will speed-up the decision making capacity of the AOA.
All Assam Ranking Badminton - Double crown for Sumana

Sumana Phukan of Jorhat won the under-13 girl's singles title and then teamed up with
Meghna Bharadwaj in the doubles event of the same category to lift the doubles title.
Sumana, in the under-13 singles event, defeated her doubles partner Meghna

Guwahati : The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) on 5th May finalized the names of five
coaches who will be entrusted with selecting and grooming the up coming players of

Assam win four kick boxing medals
Guwahati : Assam won two silvers and equal number of bronze medals in the 10th
IAKO National Kick Boxing Championship held at Dimapur from April 23 to 26.
The silver medallist were Manab Das and Hitesh Gogoi while Anupam Sarma and Putu
Sonowal won bronze medals. The team was led by Biswajit Kakoty.

Duliajan Club in quarters - GOLAP HAZARIKA CRICKET
Guwahati : Duliajan Club entered the quarter finals of the Golap Hazarika Memorial U-
14 cricket tournament defeating Chandmari Cricket Coaching Centre by eight wickets.
It was apparently a small total to be chased by the Duliajan boys as the Chandmari
Cricket Coaching Centre managed to score 100 loosing seven wickets in the stipulated
20 overs. Only Anjan Bhattacharyya was the notable scorer with 25 for the local side.
Chasing the winning target of 101 the Duliajan boys scored 104 losing two wickets. For
Duliajan, man-of-the-match Santanu Sinha contributed 34.
ACA technical body meet
Guwahati : The Assam Cricket Association's (ACA) technical committee for construction
of the stadium at Hengerabari in the city met at the ACA office here on 3rd May.
The committee had threadbare discussions on the project report submitted few
alteration in the proposed project, it was informed by the ACA secretary Bikash Baruah.
Football camp for T Ao tourney
Guwahati : Assam Football Association (AFA) will organise a coaching-cum-selection
camp in the city from May 1 to prepare the State team for the first Dr T Ao memorial

from May 16 to 29 in the city. The AFA has invited 38 players from different districts to

Guwahati: The newly constitute technical committee for selection of the venues of the
main stadium along with the main multi-purpose indoor hall and velodrome for the
2005 National Games, scheduled to be held in Assam, has visited the ASEB land at
Sarusojai in the city on April 24. The land is situated by the side of National Highway 37
and is about 2 km from the Basistha Chariali towards Jalukbari. It is an open area of
257 bighas out of which 120 bighas belong to ASEB.

AFA denies SSC allegations on soccer team selection
Guwahati: The Assam Football Association (AFA) , on April 22, denied the allegations
leveled against it by the State Sports Council (SSC) that the AFA did not co-ordinate
with the SSC in selecting the Assam football team for taking part in the North-east
Sports Festival. It may be noted here that Assam was to participate in 10 disciplines in
the Sports Festival but is now participating in nine events, as the state's football teams
(both men and women) are not taking part in the festival.
Chess tourney for students:
Guwahati: A prize money chess competition among the students of Guwahati will be
organized by the P C Barooah Chess Academy from April 20 to April 27 at the premises
of the Academy, stated a press release. The competition will be divided into two
categories- under 19 years and under 14 years.

Kaushik Das clinches AITA title
Guwahati: Kaushik Das of Assam continued his winning spree when he lifted the boy's
under 14 singles title beating Navenatha Kanan of Andra Pradesh 7-6(5), 6-2 in the
final of the AITA Super Series Junior Tennis Championship played at the National Tennis
Academy Gurgaon from April 14 to 19. However, in doubles, Kaushik partnering S

Children's chess begins
Guwahati:The first children's chess competition organized by the P C Barua Chess
Academy begun on April 20 at the Academy's premises. The tournament, which will be
played on a Swiss format was inaugurated by national chess arbitrator Bikash Ranjan
Bhuyan. The tournament is opened for two categories - U-14 and U -19 and will
continue till April 27.

Guwahati: Kazakhstan and India dominated the final day of the Asia-Pacific Armsport
Championship, which was concluded at the Cotton College indoor stadium here on April
19. Kazakhstan, however, emerged as the overall champions in the four-day meet,
which was organized by the Assam Armwrestling Association.
Rashid among BAI selectors
Guwahati:In the annual general meeting of the Badminton Association of India held on
April 15 in New Delhi, among other things, BAI has constituted its selection committee
with VK Verma, president of BAI as chairman of the committee. Omar Rashid, secretary
of the Assam Badminton Association and joint secretary of BAI was nominated as one
of the members of the five-member selection committee. This is the first time that an
official from ABA was nominated as a member of the selection committee.
Teams for NE sports festival

GTC says no to GSA soccer - State of Judges' Field evokes emotion, rage
Guwahati : Giving a big blow to the soccer scenario in the State, the Gauhati Town Club
(GTC) has decided not to field their football team in the forthcoming GSA Super
Division League in protest against the indifferent attitude of the authorities concerned
towards the historic Judges' Field.
This was disclosed by Mr Jagannath Sharma, president of GTC while addressing media
persons in the city on 4th April. Expressing serious concern over the overall standard of
sports in the State, Mr Sharma requested the State Government to take necessary
steps to make the field a sporting hub for overall development of sports in Assam.
While criticizing the authorities concerned for their failure to restore the playing arena,
Mr Sharma reiterated GTC's demand to hand over the field to the Club.
Echoing the golden moment of the club, Mr JN Bhattacharyya, spokesman of the club,
said that the Gauhati Town Club , one of the oldest and premier sports institutions has
now entered its 97 years of existence.
Pratidin lift Intermedia cricket trophy
Guwahati : Riding on a brilliant century by Rajeev Kalita, Pratidin today lifted the
intermedia cricket trophy by defeating Outstation XI by 79 in the finals. Pratidin posted
a huge total of 231 runs in their allotted 20 overs with Rajeev Kalita scoring 105 runs.
In reply , Mrinal Talukdar of Outstation XI took the attack to the opposition with some

Cricketers' aid to Ijaj's family
Guwahati : The newly formed cricketers' body billed as - Assam Cricketers Welfare
Foundation has proposed to donate a sum of Rs 5000 to the window of former Ranji
player Ijaj Hussain who was brutally killed recently.
The body was formed in a meeting held on March 25 with Debajit Saikia as president,
Rajesh Bora as general secretary and Sazzad Zahir Hussain as treasurer. The primary
aim of the Foundation will be to look after for the betterment of state cricketers.

AOA workshop deferred
Guwahati : The workshop to be organized by the Assam Olympic Association on the
theme "National Games 2005" has been deferred from March 16 to March 19.
Informing this, the secretary, Assam Olympic Association, Mukul Medhi said that as the
Chief Minister, Mr Tarun Gogoi, who is also the president of the AOA, will not be
available on March 16.

Guwahati : The All Assam Ranking Table Tennis Championship, organized by the Don

Inter-media cricket - Outstation XI's date with Pratidin in finals
Guwahati : Outstanding XI set up a little clash with Pratidin on April 1 when they
defeated G L Publication by 5 wickets on 28th March in the ongoing Inter-media Cricket
Tournament, being played at the Latasil playground.
Although Outstation XI gave away 41 runs extras, yet they successfully restricted G L
Publication to 133 runs in their alloted 25 overs. Jiban Baruah (20), Purbajyoti Chetia
(23) and Pranjal Choudhury (23) were the main contributors.
In reply, Outstation XI got to the target in 20.3 overs losing five wickets in the process.

Guwahati : Riding on a brilliant ton by former State Ranji player, Gurmeet Singh,
Ankurjyoti Club on 26th March trounced Guwahati Town Club by 98 runs in the ongoing
Madhab Ram Bora GSA "A" Division Inter-club Cricket Championship , being held at the
Ankurjyoti scored 217 runs in their allotted 30 overs losing only two wickets, after
being invited by Guwahati Town Club to make first use of the track.
Former State Ranji player Gurmeet Singh was the top scorer with 113 runs. Kushaljit
Singh was the other main contributor with 46. Akash Chakraborty and Dipu Das
chipped in with 26 and 17 respectively towards the end of the innings. Nitin Das of GTC
claimed both the wickets giving away 46 runs in the process.
In reply, GTC were bowled out for 119 runs with Nitin Das and Mantu Razak being the

Cricketer's welfare body formed
Guwahati : Assam Cricketers' Welfare Foundation (ACWF), under the chairmanship of
Mr Nabab Ali, was formed recently. The Association is aimed primarily at the well-being
and betterment of the State cricketers who have played at the district, State, and
national-level tournament. The members of the foundation also condemned the brutal
killing of Ijaj Hussain. The Foundation has decided to help the widow of Ijaj to secure a
livelihood, and an amount of Rs 5,000 was raised which will be handed over to the
immediate family members of the deceased cricketer.
Inter-media Cricket Tournament - 'Mr Extras' rule the roost as Sentinel, DD
Guwahati : Sentinel and Doordarshan on 15th March won their respective matches
against Trade Line and the Telegraph respectively to brighten their chances of entering
the 'Super Six' in the inter-Media Cricket Tournament being played at the Latasil

GSA 'A' Div. Cricket New Star trounce NJS
Guwahati : In the ongoing Madhab Ram Bora GSA "A" Division Inter club Cricket
Championship, being played at the Nehru Stadium, New Star club today defeated
Narakashur Jyoti Sangha (NJS) by 124 runs. After winning the toss, New Star Club
piled on a massive 268 runs, losing 7 wickets in the process, in their allotted 30 overs,
with Sukumar Barman being the top scorer with 43 runs. For NJS M Das bagged three
wickets giving away 25 runs. In reply, NJS could manage to score only 144 runs in 24.1
overs. K Rongpi was the highest scorer for NJS with 56 runs. For New Star Club, Asif

Vinay Cements - AITA Tennis Tournament - Double crown for Kaushik
Guwahati : The Vinay Cements-AITA Tennis Tournament concluded today with both the
singles title going Assam's way.
In the girl's under- 14 category, second seed Varsha Dutta of Assam got the better of
Parija Maloo of Maharashtra in straight sets 6-2,6-2.
Meanwhile, in the boy's under-14 event the second seed Kaushik Das, of Assam also

AATA gear up for National Games 2005
Guwahati : Keeping in view of the forthcoming National Games, 2005, to be held in
Assam, the All Assam Tennis Association has taken up various projects in the State,
including grooming of the upcoming talents, and improving the physical fitness of the
current players and the construction of a tennis complex, with all modern facilities.
The general secretary of the AATA, Mr Raktim Saikia said "The State Government has
already alloted 5 bighas for the proposed stadium. We have also approached the
Government to provide another 5 bighas in the adjacent area of the proposed stadium,
and if everything goes according to plan we will start the construction of the stadium by

Guwahati team for Nurul Amin-cricket
Guwahati : Utpal Medhi will captain the Guwahati district cricket team in the Nurul Amin
Inter-district cricket tournament to be played in Nagaon. The other members of the
team are - Subrajit Saikia, Nishanta Bordoloi, Rajkumar Mritunjoy Gohain, Sauvik Das,
Dinesh Mahanta, Bhaskarjyoti Barman, Rupam Rabha, Vishal Jain and Pablu Momin.
Four players have been kept as stand byes. They are Jagjit Singh, Rupam Talukdar,
Laxman Sikdar, Sadek Imran Choudhury. Guwahati will play its first match on February

Vinay Cements tennis tourney inaugurated
Guwahati : The Vinay Cement AITA Tennis Championship was formally inaugurated by
the Assam Industry Minister Mr Bhubaneswar Kalita on 25th February at the Nurul Amin
Tennis Complex at the Nehru Stadium here. The Assam Sports Minister was also
present on the occasion. A souvenir was also released to mark the occasion. A total of
65 participants are taking part in the premier event.
Guwahati win Nuruddin Trophy
Guwahati : Guwahati on 23rd February won the Nuruddin Ahmed Cricket Trophy after a
gap of six years after crushing Tinsukia in the final at the Maligaon Railway Stadium by
an innings and 18 runs. Tinsukia were bowled out for 292 in their second innings.
The margin would have been heavier but for a dogged 76 run last wicket partnership
between Sauvik Chakrabarty and Prasad. Sauvik Das and Vikram Rabha picked up a
wicket apiece on 23rd February.

Guwahati : In the ongoing Vinay Cement-AITA Tennis Tournament, being held at the

1st March in the boy's under-14 category. In the girls under-14 category, Varsha Dutta
will lock horns with Parija Maloo.
Kinshuk Sharma got the better of the GP Parjnesh 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 while Kaushik Das

use of the track, GIC were bowled out for 90 runs in their allotted 20 overs. The top

Guwahati : The 16th Girish Chandra Goswami Memorial Inter-Bank Cricket, organized

Guwahati : Tinsukia were facing the ignominy of an innings defeat against Guwahati in
the final of the Nuruddin Ahmed Cricket Trophy being played at the Maligaon Railway
Stadium. Trailing Guwahati in the first innings by a massive 310 runs, Tinsukia in their

Guwahati : On the opening day of the four-day final of the Nuruddin Ahemd Senior
Inter-district Cricket Tournament, being held at the NFRSA Stadium, Maligaon, between
Guwahati and Tinsukia, Tinsukia were bowled out for 180 runs after deciding to bat on
winning the toss. Barring Diganta Duara, who top scored 63 runs with 11 hits to the
fence, no other Tinsukia batsmen were able to cope with the slow left-arm spin of
Bhaskarjyoi Barman, who claimed 6 wickets giving away just 28 runs. Apart form
Diganta, the other contributors were Rupam Gogoi (23) and K Ahmed (20 not out).
Utpal Medhi also got into the act claiming two wickets each for Guwahati. Meanwhile,
Guwahati, at the end of the first day's play, were 65 for 1 with Subhrajit Saikia and

Assam leave on 21st February for speak takraw meet
Guwahati : Secretary of Assam Sepak Takraw Association Bisnu Ram Nonisa on 20th
said Assam would leave on 21st February to participate in National Speak Takraw
Championship to be held in Hyderabad from February 25. According to an official
release, Nonisa said the new sport was becoming popular in Assam and mostly Manipuri
youths were taking deep interest in the game. Assam is expected to do well in the
championship, he said.
Nuruddin final begins on 20th February
Guwahati : The four-day final of the Nuruddin Senior Inter-district Cricket Tournament
will start from 20th February at the NFRSA Stadium, Maligaon. Favourites Guwahati will
take on Tinsukia in the encounter. Meanwhile, the Nurul Amin Cricket Tournament will
be held for the first time at Nagaon from February 25. The four semifinals of the
Nuruddin Trophy- Guwahati , Tinsukia, Hailakandi and Nagaon- will clash in the Nurul
Amin Cricket Tournament. Tinsukia will take on Nagaon in the opening match.
Kerala win national handball
Guwahati : Defending champion Kerala outplayed Manipur 21-15 to win the Women's
Senior National Handball Championship which concluded here on 16th February.
Kerala dominated the match right through and went on to half time at 12-9. The Kerala
players gave ample example of team effort and came out good when it mattered.
Nandini and Seena scored 7 goals each for Manipur Apabi was the star netting eight
goals to lead Manipur revival but it was too little too late. P Beena of Kerala was
adjusted as the player of the final.
Earlier talking to the media, Mr S M Bali, Secretary General of the Handball Federation
of India appreciated the hosts Assam and expressed his satisfaction over the way the
meet was organized despite lack of proper infrastructure in the city. He also lamented

Guwahati : The North Eastern Entrepreneurship Development Society (NEEDS) will the
10th NEEDS Day and Night Cricket Tournament from February 24 at the Latasil

Chhattisgarh upset Kerela, Assam drubbed
Guwahati : Chhatisgarh upset defending champions Kerala 22-20 in a keenly contested
super league encounter of the National Women's Handball Championship at the Nehru
Stadium here on 13th February.
In the day's other super league matches Manipur out-played Assam 25-4, Haryana
downed Uttaranchal 30-23 and Punjab got the better of Maharashra 18-16.
The Chhattisgarh-Kerala match was quite entertaining as both the teams demonstrated
superb skill of attack and defence. Led by agile Anamika from the front Chhattisgarh
took early initiative with some well combined moves and took 3-0 lead. But Kerala girls

match went neck and neck. At the lemon break the scoreline was 13-13. Seema was

Guwahati : The Guwahati Sports Association has named its team for the final of the
senior inter-district cricket championship. Guwahati will take on Tinsukia in the final to

National handball meet gets under way
Guwahati : The 31st Senior National Women's Handball Championship 2003, organized
by the Assam Handball Association, got under way on 11th February at the Nehru
Stadium. The championship was inaugurated by Mr Nilomoni Sen Deka, Minister of
State, Finance, Assam. Altogether 18 teams are participating in the meet. In the
inaugural match Assam defeated Nagaland 15-2.
Triple crown for Varsha
Guwahati : It was Varsha Dutta written all over at the Yonex Open tennis championship
that concluded at the Nehru Stadium on 9th February when she won a triple crown by
winning the Girls U-14, U-16 and the mixed doubles event.
In the U-14 event Varsha defeated Shivani Dutta 9-1 in a one-sided final while in the
ladies event, it was a see-saw affair against Vungliankim before girl with the Midas
touch emerged winner 9-7. She capped the day by winning the mixed doubles with
Dilip Mohanty beating Priyannuj Laskar and Kasturi Verma 9-1.
In the boys U-10 event Susanta Mohanty edged past Sidhanta Deka to win the title. In
the boys U-12 event, Sudhanta Mohanty won a cliffhanger against Rakibul Hussain 8-7
(7-4). The boys U-14 affair was a lopsided one with Seemanta Malakar trouncing Pranai

State team for Natl Handball declared
Guwahati : The Assam handball team for the 31st Senior National Women Handball
Championship to be held from February 11-16 at the R G Baruah Sports Complex in the
city was announced on 9th February. The tournament is being organized by the Assam
Handball Association where 18 team have so far confirmed their participation. The team
was announced by Kalyan Gogoi, the organizing secretary in a press conference. The
best player of the tournament will get the Amulya Das Trophy. It is worth mentioning
that Assam was the quarter-finalist in the last edition of the tournament played in
Coaches Clinic gets under way
Guwahati : The four-day Coaches Clinic, organized by the Assam Cricket Association
got under way on 7th February at the NFRSA Stadium, Maligaon under the supervision
of the State Ranji coach Mr Lalchand Raput. Altogether 22 coaches from different part
of the State are taking part in the Clinic. Rajput will be assisted by Mr Kinjal Suratwala
who is the physiotherapist of the National Cricket Academy.
Pranai upsets Anirban in Yonex Open
Guwahati : In the ongoing Yonex Open Tennis Championship, being held at the Nehru
Stadium, fifth seed Pranai Das moved into the semifinal of the under-14 years category
by defeating fourth seed Anirban Hazarika 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). In the under-10 years event
Sidhant Deka will lock horns with Susanta Mohanty in the finals, while in the girls
under-14 years category second seed Shivani Dutta got the better of Ipsita Saikia 6-7

Guwahati : All the seeded player in the boys sections moved into semi-finals with facile

On the last day on 4th February, UP needing 230 runs to force Assam bat again
surrendered cheaply to end up at 171 for nine in the face of some brilliant bowling by
diminutive off spinner Konwar who bagged a career best 6 for 46.
Konwar used the turning track of the Nehru Stadium wicket and look vital wickets at
regular intervals to negate any chances of the visitors to stage a fight back.
This is Knowar's best bowling performance in domestic cricket after his six for 57 he
took against Orissa in their Ranji Trophy encounter at the Maligaon Railway Stadium
earlier in this season.
With 4th February's win, Assam secured three points and took their overall tall to four

Team for All England Open to camp in city
Guwahati : The Indian team for All England Badminton Championship would have a
conditioning camp here from 5th February.
The team consists of Chetan Anand, Abhin Shyam Gupta, J B S Bidyadhar, Thomas
Kurien and Nikhil Kanetkar in the men's category while the women's team would
comprise B R Meenakshi, Trupti Murgunde and Aparna Popat.
The team would leave here on February eight. The coaches would be Uday Pawar and
Bikram Singh Bisht.
Assam all set to go for the kill in Ranji
Guwahati : The question at the end of Day three was will Assam be able to bowl Uttar
Pradesh out on Day four to get two vital points and ensure its staying in the elite

Favourites in final as valiant Assam challenge over
Guwahati : The valiant run of the young State sensation Krishna Deka Raja came to
grinding halt in the quarter-final stage of the National Badminton Championship being
played here when she was beaten by B Meenakshi Petroleum Sports Control Board in
straight sets 11-9 11-0. The State damsel seemed to have lost her thirst in the second
set when she went town tamely without a semblance of a fight.
However, in the men's section strong favourites Chetan Anand cruised into the final
where he will meet third seed Abhin Shyam Gupta. In the women's section experienced
Aparna Popat will meet B R Meenakshi as both had easy semi finals here in the
Kanaklata Indoor Stadium.
Chetan Anand went as per his demolition plan but top seed Sachin Tatti hit a wall in the
form of third seed Abhin Shayam Gupta who rallied from behind to take away the
Sachin got the first game without allowing Abhin to settle down and repeatedly
attacked his third court to take the game. But nimble footed Abhin had other things in
mind. He went all out in the next game and returned everything that came on his way
and downed Sachin 15-3. The top seed never recovered form the humiliation and
although he dragged the third game Abhin ended the match 15-4, 3-15, 9-15. As far as
Chetan Anand is concerned it is a vintage performance as he emerged too strong for
unseeded Arup Sridhar. In the women's section it was a mockery of national badminton
semi final as both the matches were completely one sided leaving the spectators

Assam in driver's seat in Ranji tie
Guwahati : Hosts Assam were comfortably placed at 167 for one after bowling out Uttar
Pradesh for 211 on the second day of their Ranji Trophy match at the Nehru Stadium
here on 2nd February.
Skipper Sukhbinder Singh with his slow left arm spin had a rich haul of four for 52 as
the Uttar Pradesh batsmen, except for middle order Rahat Ilahi who made a well made
50, failed to deliver on a turning track.
In their first essay, Assam's left handed opener Subhrajit Saikia showed good
application and was unbeaten with a classy 57 studded with six hits to the fence.
Kiran Pawar was also on song hitting an unbeaten 76 with eleven fours to put on
unfinished 152 run partnership for the second wicket.
Good day for Assam in Natl badminton
Guwahati : Assam had a good day on the first of the senior National Badminton
Championship which was inaugurated by the State Governor Lt. Gen (retd) S K Sinha.
Except for Anshuman Hazarika and Oli Deka, players from the State won their
respective matches to enter the next round. Krishna Deka Raja also won her second
round match in the women's singles to enter the third round.
But the surprise of the pack was former Olympian Deepankar Bhattacharya who after
coming from a four lay-off brushed aside Vivek Tatabari 15-0, 15-1. Bahniman Bora
also won his match against Sourav Saxena 15-2 15-3.
PSPB win men's and women's team event - PSPB's day out in Natl badminton
Guwahati : Petroleum Sports Promotion Board won a golden double in the 58th Inter-
State National Badminton Championship being played here.
In the Chadha Cup for women, PSPB blanked Maharashra in the final 2-0. In the first
singles match in the final, the best women badminton player in the country, Aparna
Popat had to fight it out against Trupti Murgunde winning 11-8 11-8 to give PSPB a 1-0
lead. The issue was sealed when the women doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Shruti
Kurjan tamed Archana Deodhar and Sim Sim Salaria 13-10 11-0.
Earlier, PSPB aside the challenge of Assam in the semi final winning 2-0 without the
drop of a sweat. The experienced Popat has a few lesson in store for Assam's promising
youngster Krishna Deka Raja winning 11-7 11-2, while Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurian
defeated the pair of Krishna and Oli Deka 11-9 11-4 to enter the final.
Assam girls have tremendous potential : Popat
Guwahati : She looks more like the girl next door, soft spoken, she more racquet do
the talking. She is Aparna Popat, reigning national women's champion.
While talking to the media just after the PSPB team won the coveted Chadha Cup,
Popat said Assam youngsters possessed huge talent, but needed to play the seniors
more often, if they hoped to attain top positions in the women's rankings.
She said that Assam girls could become the future of women badminton, but needed to
be groomed properly for the big events.
Inter-State Badminton Championship - Assam eves beat WB, in semis
Guwahati : Assam eves beat the West Bengal team by 2-0 and entered the semifinal of
the Inter-state and Inter-zonal Badminton Championships which began at Kanaklata
Indoor Stadium in the city on 29th January morning. Men's team of the host, however,
went down to Railways 1-3.
In the single category, Assam girl Krishna Deka Bhattacharjee and Amrita Mukherjee of
the west Bengal 8-11, 11-3 and 11-2.
Among teams, Petroleum Sports Control Board (PSCB) started their campaign drubbing
Delhi 3-0 with top seeded Chetan Anand defeating Devender Dhillon in the opening
Anand outplayed his opponent 15-10 and 15-7 who could put up a fighting performance
in the first set but ultimately gave in to his opponent.
Assam flatter to deceive in Ranji tie
Guwahati : Assam fell short by 40 runs to gain the vital first innings leads as their Ranji
Trophy match against Tamil Nadu ended in a draw in the Nehru Stadium here on 28th

Stage set, national badminton begins on 29th January
Guwahati : Petroleum Sports Promotion Board men will take on Delhi in the opening
match of the 58th Inter-State Badminton Championships for the Rahimtools Cup
beginning on 29th January of at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium.
The tournament will be inaugurated by Mr Rameshwar Dhanowar, Labour Minister,
Government of Assam. Host Assam will play their first match against Railway at 3 p.m.
The Chadha Cup for women also gets under way 28th January at the Maligaon Railway
Stadium with PSPB taking on LIC of India Assam will open their campaign from 2 p.m.
against West Bengal.
Pawar misses ton by a whisker - Assam fight back vs TN
Guwahati : Kiran Pawar fell four short of his hundred as Assam piled up 304 for the loss
of five wickets before bad light stopped play early on 27th January.
Pawar played a patient knock of 96 before going for an ambitious shot and was caught
by Pani off the bowling of Balaji. The first wicket of the day fell when Saikia (63) tried
to steal a quick single, but was run out by a direct hit from Tamil Nadu captain Suresh.

Assam start men's campaign vs Railway - National badminton from 29th
Guwahati : The 58th Inter-State Inter Zonal Badminton Championship and the 67th
Senior National Badminton Championship begin here from January 29 and 31
The organizing secretary of the meet, Mr Omar Rashid said that the inter-State
tournament will be inaugurated by Ramshwar Dhanowar, Labour Minister, Govt of
Assam. The tournament played for the Rahamatullah Cup for the men's and Chaddha
Cup for the women's will have 11 teams in total with 129 players in fray. The teams are

Assam vs Tamil Nadu Ranji tie - TN batsmen show class, pound Assam
Guwahati : Hemang Badani and Suresh cracked unbeaten centuries as Tamil Nadu
amassed 331 for the loss of two wickets against Assam at the end of the opening day
of the Elite Group B Ranji Trophy match being played at the Nehru Stadium here on
25th January. Badani (108) and Suresh (131) made the most of a placid batting track
and a stinginess Assam bowling attack after Tamil Nadu elected to bat winning the toss.

Guwahati : The Eight Ashrafur Rahman (Raju) Memorial Under-13 Inter-coaching
Centre Cricket Academy will be held from February 1 at the Latasil Playgrounds.

Guwahati : The second all Assam limited over cricket tournament, organized by
Guwahati Town Club will begin from February 1 at Assam Engineering Institute play

The champion team of the tournament will receive Rs 10,000 along with running trophy
while the runners up will get a cash award of Rs 7,000 along with running trophy.

Double crown for Varsha in Jupiter Motor tennis
Guwahati : Varsha Dutta on 19th January won a golden double in the VIIIth Jupiter
Motor Tennis Championship played at the India Club Tennis Courts here on 19th
January in the girls events. In the U-14 category, she defeated Shibani Dutta 6-0 6-2 in
a completely lopsided final. In the U-18 category, she got the better of Kasturi Verma
without much drop of her sweat, winning in straight sets 6-2 6-3.
In the boys U-12 final, Sudhanta Mohanty defeated Rekibul Hussain in three sets 3-6 6-
2 6-3 to win the crown, while in the boys U-14, Kaushik Das in a cliffhanger defeated
Simanta Malakar 3-6 6-4 6-4.
In the boys U-18 category, Avinav Sarma put it across Srinivas Rout in another three

In the veteran's category (above 35-age group), Anup Lahoty and Gautam Banik won

Guwahati : The VIIIth India Club Jupiter Motor All Assam Ranking Junior Tennis
Championship got off to a colourful start with veteran sportsman Mr Pulin Das declaring
it open in the absence of chief guest and Education Minister Mr Pankaj Bora. In the
opening match of the under -12 boys category, Pragyan Dutta, Ankurjyoti Saikia and
Sashak Srivasta Mohanty, Gaurav Barua, Shourya Anand, Aryaman Barua, Swagat
Kashyap, Gitariha Goswmi, Anirban Hazarika, Pranjit Kalita, Anurag Barua, Pranab Das,

Golden double for Kalyan Das in PSB tennis
Guwahati : Kalyan Kumar Das of Oil India Limited won a golden double at the recently
concluded 22nd Petroleum Sports Promotion Board Inter-Unit Tennis Championship
held at the Numaligarh Refinery township. In the veteran's singles final, Das trounced
Dhruba Jyoti Dutta of ONGCL 6-0 1-0 (tie conceded) while in the veterans doubles, he
partnered Citta Bhanu Bose to beat Dhruba Jyoti Dutta and Anoop Kumar of ONGCL 6-1
6-2. It is worth mentioning that in 1984, Kalyan Das had won the men's singles and the
men's doubles final in the PSPB Tennis held in Kolkata.
Prafulla Hazarika passes away
Guwahati : Noted sports person of State Prafulla Hazarika died at his RG Baruah Road
residence here on 9th January morning. He was 77.
Hazarika, who was the best football goal keeper Assam has ever produced, was the
livewire of the State Santosh Trophy team in the Fifties and the Sixties. Under his
captaincy, Assam had the distinction of defeating a strong Bengal team, consisting of
players like PK Banerjee, Balaram, Chuni Goswami, etc., in a Santosh Trophy match at
Burnpur in 1959. He was also a member of the Assam Santosh Trophy team in 1961
when the State won the Champangi Cup, emerging as the third team of the tournament
held at Calicut.
State youngsters for Pace Academy
Guwahati : Assam Cricket Association has selected seven youngsters for training at the
Chennai-based MRF Pace Foundation.
ACA secretary Bikash Baruah said that the players of different age group have been
selected considering their performances in various tournaments.
