Red and black clashing with the green and gold. Surely many Shades Valley graduates remember the Mountain Brook series and the fierce rivalry that ensued. It's time for another Mounties/Spartans football game. For those recent graduates and current students who don't know the story behind these former rivals, here's a short history of what once was one of the most intense rivalries in the metro area. Mountain Brook opened in 1966, and played their first football season without an actual home field. The majority of their home games that year were actually played at the old Shades Valley High School. The Mounties and Spartans first hooked up on the gridiron in 1968, and played each other every season for 22 consecutive years. During that span, Robert Higginbotham was on the sidelines as a head coach for 16 of those years, 3 with Mountain Brook and 13 with Shades Valley. Many of those years they were region opponents, and a fierce rivalry developed along the way. Shades Valley currently leads the all-time series 22-9. In that tally a long history has been written, with memorable games between the teams. In 1983 both teams came into the mid-season battle undefeated and ranked in the top 10 of the state. Homestanding Mountain Brook scored right before halftime, a 6-0 lead they held until there were only mere seconds left on the clock. One of the biggest wins in Shades Valley history ensued when the Mounties scored on a short pass and converted the extra point for a 7-6 win. In 1985, the Mounties only won 2 games all year, but nothing was sweeter than the hard fought 9-7 win over the more talented Spartans. The teams also met in a monumental battle in the quarterfinals of the 1999 playoffs. Shades Valley came in with a 10-2 record and ranked #8 in the state, and top-ranked Mountain Brook was an unbeaten 12-0 and virtually unchallenged all season. The Mounties came into Spartan Stadium that autumn night and ran up and down the field, ending the Spartans unbeaten season with a 35-24 victory. The rivalry came to a head in 1997 at Frank Nix Stadium when at the end of the tense 10-8 victory by the Mounties there was a bench-clearing melee between both teams. There have only been three regular season matchups since then, and two of those were a result of region pairings, and two playoff games. The teams have only met once since 2003, but long-time Mountie faithful know the Mountain Brook game is our version of the 'Iron Bowl'. Now it's time to renew the rivalry. It's time for new memories and names to be written into the history of the Mounties/Spartans series. The Rebels rolled out to a 34-0 lead, but as as been the case all year, the Mounties didn't fold. Shades Valley scored the last 14 points of the game to make the outcome respectable, and the Rebels won 34-14. The Mounties final record was 1-9 overall and 1-6 in Region 7. The Mounties open the season against the Mountain Brook Spartans. It is the 32nd all-time matchup between the two teams. Shades Valley leads the series 22-9. Shades Valley and Mountain Brook first met in 1968, and met for 22 consecutive seasons. Since that consecutive streak ended in 1989, the teams have only met 9 times, and two of those times were in the playoffs. The teams last met to open the 2010 season, with Mountain Brook taking a 42-27 victory. Mountain Brook is coached by Chris Yeager, who is entering his sixth year at the school with a record of 39-21 while at the school. He also has been head coach at West Blocton and Walker, and has an overall record of 62-39 in nine seasons as a head coach. Shades Valley welcomes its new head coach, Bill Smith. Smith came to Shades Valley from Crossville, where he was head coach for the past two seasons. His overall record is 9-11, all at Crossville. Before his head coaching stint at Crossville, Smith was offensive coordinator at Satsuma High School near Mobile. Smith played college football at the University of Alabama. ===REGION PLAYOFF PAIRINGS=== Region 7 is paired with Region 6 for the first 2 rounds of the playoffs.
