PENNY CLELAND CaPTA GROUP
Locally owned and operated by the Woodward family since 1976, The CaPTA Group incorporates
Rainforestation Nature Park, Tropic Wings Cairns Tours, Jungle Tours, Wildlife Habitat, Port Douglas,
Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Cairns Travel Centre, Careers Training Centre, Cairns Zoom and
Wildlife Dome.
Indigenous employees currently make up 12.6 per cent of the workforce at The CaPTA Group, with
seven Indigenous staff members exceeding their 10 year long service leave. Indigenous staff are
employed in a variety of jobs within the organisation including Accountancy, Retail, Reservations,
Hospitality, Tour Guides and Cultural Performers.
The CaPTA Group recognises the value and contribution of its Indigenous employees to its business.
In choosing to employ Indigenous staff, the unique qualities they bring to the visitor experience can
add value to your service and product, providing a point of difference from
competitors. Positive experiences with Indigenous staff by both patrons and co-
workers also remove barriers to stereotyping and assist in understanding the
diversity of Australia’s Indigenous peoples.
To attract more Indigenous employees to their workforce, CaPTA have an
Indigenous Employment Strategy (IES), specifically tailored to increase indigenous employment and
to assist Indigenous employees with long term employment goals. Support in the workplace is
provided by an Indigenous Mentor. The identification and development of career pathways through
training, reviews and mentoring support provide employees with an outline of achievable goals and
the support to achieve them.
Careers Training Centre was established in partnership with the Career Training Institute of
Australia, to provide nationally accredited Hospitality and Tourism Training. Training for Indigenous
employees is assisted by our Indigenous mentor and practical workplace delivery. Participants also
receive tailored mentoring and support services throughout their training and employment period to
continue to excel in their careers pathways.
