1. What is a Mentor?


KQ:     What is my role as a mentor?

Stimulus
‘A mentor’s role is not to direct a participant’s activities, but rather enable
a participant to work in a self-directed way’

(Adult Literacy and Basic Skills Unit 1988)

‘Supervision might involve merely keeping an eye on a mentee and
informing or instructing, whereas mentoring implies involvement with the
learning process of the mentee. It is not the aim of mentoring to produce a
clone of a mentor …..’

(Wilkin, M., 1992, Mentoring in Schools)

Starter:         In pairs / group / individually, list things which might come
                 under your remit as a mentor

                 PM / NQT experience may help
                 Point of contact
                 Draw up timetable / classes
                 Meet regularly
                 Meet formally, at least once a week
                 Develop self assessment
                 Support them in the classroom
                 Make their steps to teaching incremental
                 Provide feedback
                 Negotiate targets
                 Monitor progress, providing evidence of where/how/when
                 they fulfil the National Standards
                 Highlight areas for focus / concerns
                 Provide counselling and encouragent
                 Monitor to progress of classes taught
                 Complete the formal documentation
                 Liaise with CAD / tutor

The Mentor’s Role – A Summary

It is a complex and demanding role!

You will find yourself having to:



      maintain a good professional relationship with the trainee

      help to develop the trainee’s professional standing as viewed by

       students, staff, parents etc.

      develop and support the weekly training provided by the school (co-

       ordinated by CAD)

      support the planning and evaluation of teaching events

      encourage and support a wider professional role (e.g. the tutor;

       accompanying trips; parents’ evening; extra-curricula)

      monitor and assess the programme of the trainee

      encourage self-assessment and CPD

      provide counselling – constantly boosting self-esteem and morale
