Hathersage St Michael’s Church of England Primary School
Physical Education Policy
Introduction
Physical Education is a foundation subject within the National Curriculum.
This policy outlines the purpose, nature and management of the Physical
Education taught and learned in our school. The school policy for Physical
Education reflects the consensus of opinion of the whole teaching staff. It has
been drawn up as a result of staff discussion and has the full agreement of
the governing body. The implementation of this policy is the responsibility of
all the teaching staff.
The Nature of Physical Education
Physical Education aims to develop the children’s enjoyment, confidence and
skill in physical activity and introduces them to the pleasures of sport. It is a
practical subject which gives all children irrespective of age, gender or ability,
opportunities for participation, enjoyment and success.
Physical Education promotes personal, social, intellectual and physical skills
and at our school it attempts to foster co-operation, tolerance and self-
esteem. Our school aims to promote an enjoyment in undertaking exercise in
all children that will, hopefully, be continued into adulthood as part of a healthy
lifestyle.
Entitlement
Children in our school are entitled to participate in the specific programmes of
study which outline six areas of activity that children should be involved in
during their time at school. These six are: dance, gymnastic activities, games,
athletic activities, outdoor and Adventurous activities (KS2) and swimming
(KS2)
All children in Key Stage 2 have the opportunity to join a variety of extra
curricular Physical Education activities. Every child will be given the
opportunity to attend residential activities throughout their school life.
Implementation
All children throughout each key stage will be given opportunities to plan,
perform and evaluate during Physical Education lessons. Skills should be
developed through the six areas of activity and be introduced in a balanced
programme over each school year, as detailed in the current PE scheme of
work. PE is taught as a separate subject as detailed in the Scheme of Work.
All teachers will be responsible for the planning and teaching of Physical
education.
All Physical Education activities should be enjoyable, safe and yet
challenging. The ideals associated with fair play and good sporting behaviour
will be encouraged at all times. Children will work in groups, pairs and as
individuals.
Activities are planned in such a way as to encourage full and active
participation by all children irrespective of ability. Every attempt will be made
to fully integrate special needs children into participation on equal terms with
other children. All Physical Education lessons will ensure an equal interest
and participation level for both boys and girls.
Health and Safety
The link between health and physical activity will be emphasised at every
opportunity. The school health and safety policy outlines guidance for all out
of school activities including swimming lessons. All accidents in Physical
Education lessons should be reported to the Headteacher or in their absence
the Assistant Headteacher.
When engaged in Physical Education children are expected to behave in a
considerate, responsible manner showing respect for other people and
equipment. During Physical Education, children will be encouraged to discuss
safety implications concerning themselves and others.
The safe use of equipment will be encouraged at all times and children will be
trained to move and store equipment in a safe manner. Children are trained to
collect and return equipment with the permission of the teacher. All adults
working at the school have a responsibility to report any defects in equipment
that need attention.
All children will change for Physical Education lessons. Children will be
encouraged to have bare feet for gymnastics and dance. Children will all wear
pumps or soft trainers for outdoor activities. No jewellery or watches are to be
worn for Physical Education. All members of staff conducting PE lessons will
dress appropriately.
Assessment
In Physical Education, assessments will be undertaken within each area of
focus. Teacher assessments in the focused area of Physical Education are
carried out continuously. Records of achievement in PE are recorded for each
child at the end of the Autumn and Spring term.
