Opportunity for Junior Canoe Club Members

A unique opportunity has arisen for canoe club members aged 11 – 13 years to be the FIRST
people to race Lightning Kayaks on Cardiff Bay. A fun, mini regatta will be held as part of this
year's Cardiff Bay Canoe Festival on Sunday 25th of June. The regatta will officially launch flat
water racing on Cardiff Bay and in South Wales.
Why not give your younger members the opportunity to experience flat water racing? The
regatta will be run over a short course and in the lanes of Cardiff Bay’s International Sprint
Course. Who knows, you could even be inspiring a future Olympic Champion?
To take part, you will be required to bring your prospective competitors to one or two training
sessions. This will allow the competitors to try out the kayaks, try a new technique but mainly to
have fun, being inspired to experience another discipline of our great sport.
All equipment will be supplied for training and the regatta; however there will be a small charge
at £3 per person to cover coaching costs. Training will be held at Cardiff Bay Water Activity
Centre.
To see one of your club members have the opportunity to be crowned 2006 Cardiff Bay
Lightning Champion then arrange a training session by contacting, Ben Longhurst

Calling all coaches
Calling all Inland Kayak Coaches we need your help to make the above event a success. We
need volunteer coaches to deliver some of the workshops at the above event – Llangollen. Not
all the workshops are freestyle there’ll be river safety and general skill development so you’ve no
excuse! And the more coaches we have the better the coaching ratios the youngster will get. A
great opportunity to put something back into the sport!
So if I’ve persuaded you to help get in contact on sid.sinfield@virgin.net or 01249 602 205

Good Practice and Child Protection:
The WCA has arranged the above course to run out of Channel View Leisure Centre Cardiff on
Sunday 9th April 2006 between 10-1pm. The course looks at how to protect yourself as a coach
or adult helper, the young people you are coaching and your employer by understanding and
following good coaching practice. Learn about child abuse and how to handle situations if you
have concerns. The WCA strongly recommends that at least two adults from each club attend
this workshop or one like it – we have tried to make this as affordable as possible with a cost of
just £8 which goes toward the resources you take away. To book on this course please contact
the RCO for the SE Paul Samuel or use the booking for form for the coaching update weekend.

There will be a selection of workshop held on both the Saturday and the Sunday and will
include:
 An introduction to coaching sea kayaking – an opportunity to explore coaching in this
area of the sport – ideal for aspirant level 3 to pick the brains of more experienced
coaches, those who’ve never coached a sea kayak and those wishing to pick up some
       useful tools.
 Coaching Young People – A course that looks to improve the coaching and
understanding of any coach working with young people.
 Coaching Polo – An opportunity to explore coaching in this area of the sport.
 Fundamental paddlesport skills – A chance to improve your coaching of the basic
paddlesport skills. The workshop will address issues such as good posture, efficient use
of the blade and the importance of good connections through the body into the boat. The
workshop will help improve your understanding of the basic skills, develop observational
techniques, and give you some tools / activities to apply in your day to day coaching.
This workshop would be ideal for anyone who is involved in coaching basic paddlesport
skills (I.e. 1 - 4 star skills) in any discipline.
 Good Practice and Child Protection – see above

courses are run Free by BCU Coaching Staff, unpaid Volunteer coaches or where coaches
are paid by negotiating group bookings which has made it possible to pass on the discount to
volunteers, paddlers and coaches. However if the minimum numbers for each course have not
been booked in advance It will unfortunately be necessary to cancel unless those already
booked on are prepared to pay any additional course fee to make the course viable.
If you are interested in participating in the Club Development programme or wish to attend any
