Hi, this is Heather Wells. You’re listening to Learning English with CBC newscast for the
week of June 4th.
Here is our first news story.
Highway honours Canadian Forces members from Manitoba
The Premier of Manitoba and representatives of the Canadian Forces and the Royal
Canadian Legion unveiled the Highway of Heroes last week. The Highway of Heroes is
part of the Trans-Canada Highway west of Winnipeg. It honours Manitobans who serve
or have served in Canada’s armed forces. The Highway of Heroes goes from Winnipeg
to Shilo, the town that is home to a Canadian Forces Base. It is about one-hundred-
and-eighty kilometres long. Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia also have
highways of heroes dedicated to Canadian Forces members.
And in Canadian news,
Plastic bags will be banned in Toronto by 2013
Toronto’s city council voted to ban plastic bags in that city by 2013. The vote was very
close, with twenty-four councillors voting for the ban and twenty voting against the ban.
City councillors who support the ban want to see shoppers use reusable bags instead of
disposable bags. They say plastics bags are not good for the environment. Toronto’s
mayor does not support the ban. He doesn’t think Council should tell retail stores what
they can give out to their customers. One city councillor said that retail stores should
offer free paper bags to customers. Los Angeles and Seattle in the United States are
two cities that have already banned plastic bags.
And in international news,
River parade celebrates Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
A parade was held on the River Thames in London, England to celebrate Queen
Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. The Diamond Jubilee honours Queen Elizabeth’s sixtieth
anniversary as Queen. Over one million people attended the event. One thousand
boats took part in the parade. Over fifty of the boats in the parade were from other
Commonwealth countries, including Canada. The boats included military boats, canoes
and dragon boats. The parade ended with a fireworks display. The weather for the
event was cool and drizzly.
