NUT Safety Representatives and Support on Health and Safety in Schools
As you may know, I am the NUT’s Health and Safety Adviser for the …………
division/association. As such, I am responsible for helping NUT members in
……………………… with issues and problems concerning health and safety in schools.
I am also responsible for liaising with and supporting NUT school representatives and
school safety representatives.
We are keen to make sure that every school in ……………….. has an officially-
appointed NUT school safety representative. This is because officially-appointed NUT
safety representatives have a range of legal rights and powers which are of great help to
us in any situations where problems arise.
The NUT …………………….. division/association therefore intends to appoint all of its
NUT school representatives as official NUT safety representatives. This does not mean
we are expecting you to take on lots of additional work on health and safety. You
will be able to call upon my support whenever you wish and further details of the support
available to NUT safety representatives is set out below.
Please remember that safety representatives do not have any specific legal duties or
responsibilities which go beyond those of any other employee. Rather, as I said above,
they have rights and powers. You will be able to use these, should the need arise, to
help the NUT and your colleagues to deal with any health and safety problems at your
These powers include the rights to:
obtain access to health and safety documents such as accident books and
policies and procedures;
make representations to LEA and school managers on anything affecting health,
safety and welfare at work; and
carry out inspections and investigations regarding any complaints, accidents and
It may, of course, be the case that there is already an NUT safety representative at your
school or that one of the other NUT members in your school will wish to take on the role.
If so, please let me know and I will make sure that they are the person who is officially
In the event of any problems arising, I am available to support you, to provide you with
information, to accompany you on any school inspections if required, and to make any
necessary approaches to the LEA or Governing Body. I would, therefore, like to
encourage you to contact me whenever you need any help or advice on health and
safety issues. Advice is also available from the NUT Regional Office. The Health and
Safety Unit at NUT Headquarters is also able to provide briefing documents, on a wide
range of health and safety topics. Finally, there is a large amount of detailed information
available on the NUT website at www.teachers.org.uk
Should you need to exercise your rights and powers, you are legally entitled as a safety
representative to paid time off during your working day to undertake your functions. In
addition, you are legally entitled, although not obliged in any way, to paid time off to
attend a training course. The NUT’s five day Health and Safety Representatives’
Training Course is held every term at the Union’s Training Centre at Stoke Rochford Hall
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. NUT representatives make a valuable
contribution, as part of the NUT team, towards protecting teachers’ interests. Health and
safety issues are an important issue for all of us. Please contact me if you have any
issues involving health and safety with which you need help.
