STOOL SPECIMEN COLLECTION
GIARDIA/CRYPTO &/OR OVA & PARASITE SPECIMEN
Your physician has ordered a test to check for stool parasites. Parasites are cyclic and can vary
in number in the stool from day to day, therefore he/she may have ordered this test to be run up
to three times/three sets. Even though you may have frequent bowel movements, collect only
ONE STOOL SPECIMEN PER DAY.
If you have been scheduled for an upper or lower G.I. x-ray series, you must collect the specimen
before the x-ray prep has been started, or you must wait until ALL the barium has passed through
your system (which will take a minimum of three to four days). Barium will interfere will the

various places of the stool specimen. If there is any mucous or pus, take a portion from that site
as well. Add sample to the vial(s) until the liquid preservative level reaches the red line on the

well. If you are given >1 vial for collection, make sure to fill all vials from one single bowel
movement. Record LEGAL name, date & time of collection, and sample type/consistency on

collected all of the specimens that your physician has ordered for you. Bring the samples to the
laboratory at your convenience.
