                             IDENTIFYING TALENTS AND STRENGTHS
We believe that you will be happier and more successful in life if you are in a career that will maximize your use
of your natural talents and strengths. We want to help you identify those and use that knowledge to help you
choose careers and your major in college. Let’s start by identifying some of your Good Experiences. Good
Experiences are the unique events in your life that describe something you feel you did well, enjoyed doing and
are proud of. They could come from any time in your life and any area of your life. They are specific, concrete
events with a situation that occurred, an action you performed, and a result or outcome. They are often little
events that no one else knows about - a small triumph in your life that gave you a sense of satisfaction and
fulfillment. However, to qualify, a Good Experience MUST be something that you feel you did well, enjoyed
doing, and are proud of.

                                    GOOD EXPERIENCES
Strengths-based assessment is an effort to identify the skills, abilities, talents and strengths that are revealed
through the study of your Good Experiences. To help you identify those talents and strengths, we are going to
turn those sentence fragments into stories that will flush out the talents and strengths you used in your Good
Experiences. This is where the acronym SAC becomes a useful tool. SAC stands for:
               Situation
               Action
               Consequence

For example,

13. One time I solved a problem was when __I used my school Spanish to help some customers.____________

Which resulting in this Good Experience:

One spring, I worked part-time at a gas station to earn money for the summer. One night, a group of
Hispanic people pulled in to get gas. They spoke no English and when they came to the window it
was apparent that they were quite lost. I was able to help them using the Spanish I had learned in the
past year of school. This enabled them to get back on the road onto their destination, while allowing
   me to practice my Spanish.

15. One time I went beyond what was required to just do the job by __We had a hard day at work and I helped
one guy get over it by having fun._____________________________________________________________

Which resulted in this Good Experience:

One night while working at McDonald’s, we had a hard rush that lasted five hours. One of the newer
employees had not been able to keep up and was exhausted. After we closed, I told him that all of the
nights would not be as bad as this one and he would do better next time. To help rebuild some joy
and give him a positive memory of that day, I led him and a few other employees into a nearby
playground and using trays from McDonalds we slid down the playground slide at alarming speeds.
We had a great time, bonded the team more closely, and improved overall productivity the next day.

YOUR TURN!
Review the sentence completion exercise you just completed. Use the SAC form on the next page to
develop factual stories describing each of your Good Experiences. Photocopy this page TEN times and
write one story on each page. You will need at least SEVEN stories to fully identify your talents and
strengths. Give each story a title.

                 WRITING GOOD EXPERIENCE STORIES

TITLE_________________________________________________

Don’t talk generally about an activity. Pick a specific example of when you had a Good Experience. For
example, don’t write about always taking on a leadership role. Instead be specific. “One time at a Boy Scout
Jamboree I got my patrol together and we decided to enter a contest to build a rope bridge….” Now what did
you do? How did it turn out? Be specific.

SITUATION: (Describe the specific problem, condition, event, need, class assignment, or challenge
     presented by this Good Experience.)

ACTION: (What did you do to correct the problem, resolve the situation, complete the assignment, or
     make a difference?)

CONSEQUENCE: (What were the results or consequences of your actions?)

Experience go through the list of Strengths and place a check mark in the box for those strengths were the
MOST IMPORTANT strengths used by the story teller in that Good Experience. Try to identify at least
three strengths for each Good Experience. Total the number of times each strength received a check mark.

                                     SELECTING CAREERS
Now go back and review the Talents and Strengths you checked. Select from the list the four that are your
strongest that you most want to use in your next career. Write those here:

1. __________________________________ 3. ____________________________________

2. __________________________________ 4. ____________________________________

Now go to the following website: http://online.onetcenter.org/

Click on “Find Occupations”. Under “ONET Descriptors” click on “Work Activities”. Each of your four
selected Talents and Strengths belongs to one of the four groups: Information Input, Interaction With
Others, Mental Processes, Work Output. Take each Talent and Strength one at a time and open the
corresponding online folder. Click on the corresponding Talent and Strength. Review the job titles listed.
Research those job titles that are unfamiliar to you. Follow this procedure with each of your four Talents and
Strengths. Are there specific jobs that show up under all four lists of jobs? Those may be jobs you want to
consider very carefully.

Now go to the Advising Services Web Site. Click on the “Careers by True Colors” page. Review the
document first with your Primary Color and then with your Secondary True Colors. Compare that list with
the list of ONET occupations. Add any job titles to your list that you may want to research further.

Write down on the Choosing a Career Assessment Results page your Talents and Strengths, your True
Colors, the six job titles that interest you the most, and begin your research of these careers.
