Job Title:                   IT Technician

Purpose of Job:

To provide Information Technology / Helpdesk support contributing to an efficient
and reliable Information Technology service that enhances the learners’ experience
(and staff in support of learning) and allows the college to move towards its strategic
aims.

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

   1. To provide professional and ‘customer oriented’ support to IT users (Staff and Learners)
       around the college.
   2. To take part in ensuring the Network administration is handled efficiently and in good
       time.
   3. To help with Network development activity as directed by IT Operations Manager.
   4. To take part in equipment and software rollout projects.
   5. To install software and hardware within the colleges standards framework.
   6. Liaising with the IT Operations Manager to ensure that BCC’s security policy takes into
       account the educational and business requirements of BCC’s stakeholders, legal
       requirements and good IT and Education sector practice.
   7. Document and manage the College data and voice networking infrastructure.
   8. Document and manage active and security devices on the network.
   9. To support and maintain the Apple network and the Apple clients.
   10. Meeting IT SLA availability and security metrics.
   11. Contributing to the delivery of an IT Support service to College stakeholders.
   12. Keeping up to date with the latest technologies.
   13. Undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required commensurate with this
       grade, at the initial agreed place of work, or at other locations in the colleges catchment
       area.
   14. The post holder will be expected to work flexibly and efficiently to maintain the highest
       professional standard and to promote and implement the policies of the Corporation.
   15. The post holder will be expected to comply with any rules and regulations, which the
       Corporation may from time to time issue to ensure the efficient operation of its business
       and the welfare and interests of its students and employees.
   16. Co-operate and liaise with colleagues in the section and across the college.
   17. Participate in the consultative framework of the sector and across the college.
   18. Participate in in-service staff development programmes as appropriate.
   19. In carrying out his/her duties the person appointed must:
              Comply with Health and Safety Regulations
              Take full responsibility for ensuring the Health and Safety of students under their
              supervision and control.

Physical Conditions

Place of Work
This post will be primarily based at the Deane Road Centre. The post will also include direct
support for other college out-centres in the Bolton area.

Working Hours
You will be expected to work 35 hours per week. As the availability of ILT services are critical to
the college and in line with most IT working environments, you will be expected to be flexible
around when these hours are worked.

Training
The college wishes to encourage staff to increase their skills and qualifications, for the benefit of
the individual and the college. The post holder may therefore, at the discretion of management,
be required to undertake training and development appropriate to present and future needs of
the college.

All staff will be required to participate in an annual staff development review.

Social Conditions
In the interests of Health and Safety, smoking is not allowed on any site operated by the
college.

Probationary Period
For new employees to Bolton Community College, the first 9 months will be a probationary
period, during which their suitability for the position to which they have been appointed will be
assessed. The college reserves the right to extend their probationary period, if, in its opinion,
circumstances so require. During the probationary period, the employment may be terminated
either by the post holder or by the college on giving one month’s written notice. The college’s
disciplinary procedure will not apply during the probation period.

Appraisal
The post holder will be required to participate in a staff appraisal scheme approved by the
college.
