LEVEL 5 - Agriculture Mountbellew Agriculture College

The Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture is offered at six Agricultural Colleges:
Ballyhaise, Clonakilty, Gurteen, Kildalton, Mountbellew and Pallaskenry & Regional
Education Centres on Demand.

Applications should be made directly to the college of the applicant's choice offering
the course by the 1st June in the year of application for course

1 year - 25 weeks course work at the college and 12 weeks on an approved training
farm.

Students with this Level 5 award may progress to the Advanced Certificate in
Agriculture.

Follow on Studies: Students with this Level 5 award may apply, via the Higher
Education Links Scheme, for the Higher Certificate in Agriculture. Students with the
Level 5 award at merit or distinction may apply directly to Waterford, Cork and
Dundalk IT's for direct entry to year 2 of the Higher Certificate in Agriculture.

LEVEL 6 - CAGRI - Agriculture - Advanced

The course extends over 15 months and is delivered by a combination of on-farm
placement or work related placement, course work delivered at local centres and on
Benchmarking farms, and block release course work at the college.

On successful completion, students are awarded the FETAC Level 6 Advanced
Certificate in Agriculture. This meets the training requirement for Stamp Duty
Exemption.

Students who have completed the FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture are
eligible to apply.

LEVEL 7 GA172 Rural Enterprise & Agribusiness 3 Years Ordinary Degree

-3 years.

• Year One of the course is common with the BSc in Agriculture and Environmental
Management (GA 777), and is based at Mountbellew on four days per week and one
day per week in GMIT. At the end of year 1 students can choose whether they wish to
pursue the Bachelor of Business in Rural Enterprise and Agri-business (GA172) or the
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Environmental Management (GA 777)

• Year Two is based at Mountbellew on three days per week and two days at GMIT.

• Students reside at Mountbellew for the first two years.

• Year Three is spent at the GMIT Galway campus.

• There is a three month industry work placement period in year two in an
agribusiness.

Career Opportunities:
You will be well prepared to operate in a variety of managerial and administrative
positions in rural and agri-enterprises, or to become self-employed. Graduates can
progress to a variety of work in agri-business and agricultural services: for example,
in marketing, information processing, administration and management posts, as well
as various employment opportunities in rural development.

Follow-on Studies: TO LEVEL 8
Graduates can transfer to the Bachelor of Business (Honours) Degree programme at
this or other colleges and universities in Ireland and elsewhere. Such transfers are
dependent on results and on comparability of courses. Linkages with EU colleges
open up exciting possibilities for further study.
