                                2013 Scholarship Opportunities
American Water Scholarship
Purpose: American Water is pleased to support the development of professionals interested in service to the water
industry. Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest investor-owned U.S. water and wastewater utility
company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., the company employs more than 7,000 dedicated professionals
who provide drinking water, wastewater and other related services to approximately 15 million people in 32 states

Black & Veatch – Making a Difference Scholarship
Purpose: To assist a student seeking an undergraduate degree in the water science field.

Thomas R. Camp Scholarship
Purpose: Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Thomas R. Camp advanced state-of-the-art engineering
and technology in the drinking water field. His early years were spent as a practicing engineer, followed by a
professorship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Subsequently, he became co-founder and senior
partner of Camp Dresser & McKee, Inc., the international environmental consulting firm. During his career he
displayed a relentless passion for learning and research. The water treatment processes that Dr. Camp
developed for mixing, flocculation and sedimentation set standards for the industry. Other contributions
included the advancement of dual-media filters, porous underdrains, and direct filtration of municipal water
supplies. In 1993 Camp Dresser & McKee created the Thomas R. Camp Scholarship in honor of the
contributions of Dr. Camp to support and encourage outstanding graduate students conducting applied
research in the drinking water field.

Carollo Engineers Inc. Scholarship
Purpose: The Carollo Engineers Scholarship was established in 2011 to provide funding for a masters student
engaging in water-energy nexus issues for water, wastewater or water reuse

    Pursuing master’s degree
    Awarded annually, will provide one-time funding of $5,000.


Holly A. Cornell Scholarship
Purpose: The Holly A. Cornell Scholarship created in 1990 by CH2M Hill, Inc. honors the name of Holly A.
Cornell, co-founder of CH2M Hill, and to encourage and support outstanding female and/or minority students
pursuing advanced training in the field of water supply and treatment. Students who been accepted into
graduate school but have not yet begun graduate study are encouraged to apply.

Specific Eligibility/Support:
    Female and/or minority student (see application form for specifics) pursing master’s degree
    Awarded annually, will provide one-time funding of $7,500.
    CH2M Hill, Inc. will provide travel assistance to the AWWA conference where the award is presented
Echologics
Purpose: Established to benefit students seeking a graduate degree in mechanical engineering with a strong
interest in sustainability and water infrastructure

Specific Eligibility/Support:
    Pursuing graduate degree in mechanical engineering with a strong interest in sustainability and water
        infrastructure
    Judging criteria includes Awarded annually, will provide one-time funding of $5,000

        AWWA conference where the award is presented


Hazen and Sawyer Scholarship
Purpose: Established to benefit students seeking a master’s degree in the water science field.

    Judging criteria includes potential to provide leadership in applied research and consulting in the drinking
        water field
    Awarded annually, will provide one-time funding of $5,000
    Hazen and Sawyer will provide travel assistance to the AWWA conference where the award is
        presented


HDR/Henry “Bud” Benjes Scholarship
Purpose: To assist a student pursuing a master’s degree in the water science field.

Specific Eligibility/Support:
    Pursuing master’s degree
    Awarded annually, will provide one-time funding of $5,000
    HDR will provide travel assistance to the AWWA conference where the award is presented


Larson Aquatic Support Scholarship (LARS)
Purpose: Dr. Thurston E. “Lars” Larson was a brilliant, articulate, and dedicated water chemist and researcher. He
made numerous scientific contributions in diverse areas, including but not limited to corrosion control, treatment
and distribution of domestic and industrial water supplies, aquatic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and
environmental chemistry. In addition, Dr. Larson continually emphasized the need for strong graduate programs in
water chemistry and related fields to train qualified, dedicated scientists and engineers who will provide leadership
in efforts to improve water quality. Larson Aquatic Research Support (LARS) scholarships honor the memory of Dr.
Larson by providing support and encouragement to outstanding graduate students preparing for careers in the
fields of science or engineering to which Dr. Larson made significant contributions.

Specific Eligibility/Support:
    Awarded annually, will provide one-time funding for two scholarships:
             o $5,000 for a master’s student
             o $7,000 for a doctoral student


Malcolm Pirnie Scholarship
Purpose: To assist a student seeking either a masters or doctoral degree in the water science field.

Specific Eligibility/Support:
    Pursuing graduate degree (masters or doctoral)
    Awarded annually, will provide one-time funding of $5,000
    Judging criteria includes potential to provide leadership in the water service industry and pursuit of
        graduate working advancing the science and engineering of drinking water
Mueller Systems
Purpose: Established to benefit students seeking a graduate degree in engineering or physics with a strong
interest in sustainability and water infrastructure

Specific Eligibility/Support:
    Pursuing graduate degree in engineering or physics with a strong interest in sustainability and water
        infrastructure
    Awarded annually, will provide one-time funding of $5,000
    Mueller Water Products Company, will provide travel assistance to the AWWA conference where the
        award is presented


MWH Scholarship
Purpose: To assist a student pursing a master’s degree in the water science field.

Specific Eligibility/Support:
    Pursuing masters degree
    Awarded annually, will provide one-time funding of $5,000


Neptune Scholarship
Purpose: To assist a student seeking an undergraduate degree in mechanical electrical, computer or software
engineering.

Charles “Chick” Roberts Scholarship
Purpose: The Roberts Filter Group established this scholarship in support of an individual seeking to provide
advancement in water. Chick Roberts is honored for his dedication to AWWA serving as President, Treasurer and
founder of both the Puerto Rico and Quebec sections. Among his many accomplishments, Chick is credited with
the development of High Rate Filtration and led the Roberts Filter Group to construct the water filtration system for
the Atomic Energy Commission. Chick strove to uphold high professional standards, moral integrity and has been
referred as “the conscience of the Water Treatment Industry.”

Specific Eligibility/Support:
    Pursuing an undergraduate degree at a Pennsylvania college or university
