Brain Injury Primer A FREE online course available through the Brain Injury Association of New Jersey and Rutgers Continuous Education The Brain Injury Association of New Jersey and Rutgers Continuous Education have partnered to develop an online course which provides information about working with students with brain injury. This online course provides New Jersey educators with 10 professional development hours (Provider #2782) and 1 Rutgers University CEU. Each year in the United States approximately 475,000 traumatic brain injuries occur among children ages 0 to 14 years, and brain injury remains the leading cause of death and disability in children and adolescents. The causes of brain injury are many, but the consequences are similar. Causes can include, but are not limited to, concussions, motor vehicle crashes, blast injuries, falls, assaults, stroke, infections to the brain, aneurysms, brain tumors, and loss of oxygen to the brain. Brain injury is complex and unique. The road to recovery is a long process. The initial return to school is just the beginning. Educators are critical players and resources on this journey as it continues over time. Many educators have little training since few courses or training programs on this topic currently exist. With an increase in the identification of students with brain injuries in schools, educators become vital resources for students, colleagues and families. This course will help educators understand the unique characteristics of students with brain injury. This course, created by the Children & Adolescents Committee of the Brain Injury Association of New Jersey, is intended for general and special education teachers, school psychologists, educational consultants, social workers, guidance counselors, principals, speech and language pathologists and other professionals who work with students with brain injuries. The Children & Adolescents Committee is a long standing committee of the Brain Injury Association of New Jersey dedicated to improving supports and services for children and adolescents affected by brain injury. Learn about what brain injury is; how brain injury affects students; and how to assess and teach students with brain injury.
