2012 Mole Day Theme: Molar Comics

Celebrated annually on October 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m., Mole Day commemorates
Avogadro's Number (6.02 x 1023), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. Mole Day was
created as a way to foster interest in chemistry. Schools throughout the United States and
around the world celebrate Mole Day with various activities related to chemistry and/or moles.

                              Mole Day Project Ideas

Every Project must display some scientific information.
Creativity could earn you bonus points.
 Create a Stuffed Mole – To be displayed in the room on Mole Day.
 Write a Mole Day song (be original) – to be sung on Mole Day. (At least one full page)
 Make (No less than 3) Mole Day greeting cards – To hang in the room, send to a staff member,
or another chemistry student. (It must be must have a greeting card type saying inside.)
 Decorate with Mole-biles – Hang them form the ceiling of our classroom.
 Write a Mole Day poem, story, or cartoon – To be read on mole Day (At least one full page)
 Make a Mole Day flag – To hang in the classroom on the Mole Day. (It must be at least
18” x 24“.) It must also include an original pledge that relates to this years theme.
 Mole Day youtube video – the video most include information relating to the mole unit and to the
       Mole Day Theme.

If you are making the base for a project, it cannot be any larger than 30 cm high & 36 cm wide.

There are three main aspects of the project that must be completed:

   1. The overall project (one of the above) that must include a relations or spoof of a chemistry
      mole and this year’s theme.
   2. Information about the chemistry mole (Including: who discovered it, when it was
discovered, how it is used, and examples of how it is used).
   3. An example calculation (picket fence) that includes
                              Mole Day Project Rubric

Name __________________________ Grade ______

Each project must either contain scientific information about the mole, which is
used in chemistry, directly on it or have a witty write-up relating scientific
information to the project. Projects should also contain some relation to this year’s
theme (“Molar Comics”).

                                  Grading Rubric

The project is outstanding: it exceeds the quality standards in at least
A two areas and meets quality standards in the third area (content,
90 – 100% design, and workmanship). It will be kept as a model for future years,
after being on display at HAHS. The percentage will be determined by
comparing the content, design, and workmanship of similar projects.

The project exceeds the quality standards in at least one area and
meets quality standards in two of the areas (content, design, and
   B
workmanship). The percentage will be determined by comparing the
80% - 89%
content, design, and workmanship of similar projects.

The project meets the quality standards in two of the three areas
C (content, design, and workmanship) but does not meet the standards
in the third area. The percentage will be determined by comparing the
70% - 79%
content, design, and workmanship of similar projects.

The project shows some evidence of quality but does not meet the
D standards in at least two areas. The percentage will be determined by
60% - 69% comparing the content, design, and workmanship of similar projects.

              No project was submitted.
