The u l t i m a t e g o a l o f T o r a h i s t o b r i n g a b o u t f u l l f r e e d o m .  In
t h e f i r s t s t a g e s o f s e r v i c e , we have t o w o r k on b r e a k i n g o u r na¬
t u r e and o u r t i e s t o t h e w o r l d l y d e s i r e s .     However, t h e n e c e s s i t y
f o r s u c h s e r v i c e i t s e l f shows t h a t we have n o t a t t a i n e d a f u l l
l e v e l o f Torah experience.                 O n l y when t h e r e i s no t r a c e o f c o n ¬
n e c t i o n t o m a t e r i a l d e s i r e s l e f t can o u r T o r a h s e r v i c e be com¬
plete (J).

          On a p r a c t i c a l b a s i s , e a c h one o f us can a t t a i n ( a t l e a s t t o
some d e g r e e ) t h e s e c o n d l e v e l d e s c r i b e d a b o v e .    I t has been men¬
t i o n e d on a number o f o c c a s i o n s w h i l e a Jew i s s t u d y i n g T o r a h ,
he must s t a n d above and d i s r e g a r d a l l w o r l d l y m a t t e r s .           J u s t as
on Shabbos, he f o r g e t s h i s m a t e r i a l c o n c e r n s and w o u l d n o t p i c k
up a t e l e p h o n e , e t c . , s i m i l a r l y when l e a r n i n g , h i s s t u d i e s d o m i ¬
n a t e h i s t o t a l a t t e n t i o n ( K ) ; i f t h e t e l e p h o n e r i n g s he does n o t
answer i t , h i s m i n d i s f o c u s e d on T o r a h a l o n e .

4.         I n p r e v i o u s g e n e r a t i o n s , A c h a r o n S h e l Pesach was a l s o c o n ¬
n e c t e d w i t h t h e coming o f Moshiach.                      This i s obvious from the
H a f t o r a h w h i c h e l a b o r a t e s on v a r i o u s d e t a i l s o f t h e M e s s i a n i c age.
However, by i n s t i t u t i n g M o s h i a c h ' s Seudah, t h e B a a l Shem Tov (L)
added a new d i m e n s i o n .              Moshiach i s a p p r e c i a t e d not o n l y i n
s p e e c h and i n T o r a h , b u t a l s o c o n n e c t e d w i t h p h y s i c a l a c t i v i t y ,
a s s i m u l a t e d i n t o o u r s y s t e m , b e c o m i n g p a r t o f o u r f l e s h and b l o o d .

          The q u e s t i o n may a r i s e : What i s t h e d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n e a t ¬
i n g M a t z o h now i n M o s h i a c h ' s Seudah and e a t i n g i t d u r i n g t h e p r e ¬
v i o u s d a y s o f P e s a c h . We a r e t o l d t h a t when we e a t M a t z o h ( n o t
n e c e s s a r i l y d u r i n g M o s h i a c h ' s Seudah) we must r e a l i z e t h a t "we
are e a t i n g G-dliness."

          The d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n t h e two can be compared t o t h e two
d i f f e r e n t s t a g e s o f t h e M e s s i a n i c e r a (see f o o t n o t e F ) .    I n the
f i r s t stage, t r a c e s o f Golus w i l l remain.                 Only i n t h e second
s t a g e w i l l a l l r e m n a n t s o f any i n f l u e n c e s c o n t r a r y t o T o r a h d i s ¬
a p p e a r . M o s h i a c h ' s Seudah g i v e s us a t a s t e o f s u c h a p e r s p e c t i v e ,
and f u r t h e r m o r e , endows us w i t h t h e p o t e n t i a l t o p e r p e t u a t e t h a t
state throughout the e n t i r e year.                      T h i s meal g i v e s us t h e p o t e n ¬
t i a l t o r i s e above G o l u s even now, t o overcome a l l t h e d i s t u r b i n g


(J) I n Chassidus these two levels are: the service of " I s c a f i a " (breaking your
animal nature) and "Ishopcha" (transformation of your animal nature to G‫־‬dli‫־‬
ness). I n I s c a f i a , you have worldly desires, but c o n t r o l yourself and master
them. I n Ishopcha, you transform your m a t e r i a l nature and that of your en¬
vironment to the point where i t i s no longer an obstacle to Torah.
(K) The example of Shabbos also shows us that we have the power to carry out
such a service.
(L) An i n t r i n s i c r e l a t i o n s h i p e x i s t s between the Baal Shem Tov, the i n i t i a t o r
of Moshiach's Seudah and the Seudah i t s e l f - as stated above, the Seudah aims
at b r i n g i n g us to a state of awareness above the l i m i t a t i o n s of nature. Such
a state was openly revealed by the Baal Shem Tov. Even now, a wondrous or
miraculous story i s r e f e r r e d to as a "Baal Shemska Ma'aseh."
