Language Arts/Social Studies
We will be writing more and more this six weeks. The first six weeks, the emphasis is
gathering ideas so that we have something to write about and free writing. A complete
sentence and ending punctuation is my first concern. We will continue to work on nouns
and adjectives (the bubble map requires adjectives). We have worked on four thinking
maps (circle, bubble, double-bubble, and tree). I have four more to introduce over the
next few weeks but will be coming back to these first four to help us organize our
thoughts. Our spelling rotation continues—your child should bring a list home on
Tuesday afternoon this week to study daily. We work on our words each day and
specifically in a spelling station on Wednesday and Thursday—I will be adding some
other activities this six weeks. Our traditional literature continues this week as we read
“The Dragon’s Pearl”, “The Raven: An Inuit Myth/Play”, and “The Grasshopper and the
Ant”. Later in the week, they will be able to choose a way to present what they have
learned about legends, folktales, fables, myths, and tall tales—either in a flipbook,
thinking map, poster, etc. I will present a rubric to them showing what each
representation will “require”. We will continue to read nonfiction text and discuss
elements of nonfiction. Groups will be assigned to ask questions and read to discover
answers about the following Sonia Manzano, Helen Keller and Mary Pratt plus some
other citizen heroes. We will begin reading about several explorers and start with
Christopher Columbus who discovered America on October 12, 1492.
Math
We will be adding two-digit numbers, rounding numbers, rounding more numbers, and
estimating sums this week. FasttMath will be used in math stations and at least two times
a week in our computer lab. We have also been using Understanding Numbers and
Numeration plus reviewing a variety of math concepts in FunBrain and BrainPop. You
should be able to access FasttMath at home now. The labs will also be open before
school throughout the week for FasttMath.
Science
This week our labs will include reading a thermometer and predicting, measuring, and
recording the temperature of three water samples (cold, warm, and room temperature)
plus determining whether an object will sink or float. We will read “The Power of
Magnets” in our Journeys magazine and discuss new vocabulary. We will explore the
“power” of magnets in our “Magnetic Pick-Ups” lab later in the week.
Miscellaneous Information
Remember to use the crosswalk when entering and leaving the school. This sets a great
example for your child. Safety FIRST!
