							Dr. Richard Shiels
Newark Earthworks Center
1179 University Drive
Newark, OH 43055-1707

July 30, 2009

Dear Dr. Shiels,

The Ohio Historical Society is pleased to be a part of the Newark Earthworks Center’s
fourth Newark Earthworks Day, scheduled for October 17, 2009, and of the related
events. OHS has participated in every previous Newark Earthworks Day and is looking
forward to this autumn’s programs which will bring attention to the Newark Earthworks.

Two of the events leading up to Newark Earthworks Day and one following it will occur
at our site, the Newark Earthworks State Memorial.

A Native Harvest Festival at the Great Circle Earthworks on Saturday, September 26,
will feature the ancient garden which Newark school children planted in the spring.

The Walk with the Ancients, scheduled for October 10 – 16, will greatly highlight the
theme of the Newark Earthworks as a “Place of Pilgrimage.”

The Ohio Historical Society is honored that the 70-mile Walk will conclude with a
ceremony on October 16 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Octagon Earthworks, located at the
Moundbuilders Country Club in Newark, Ohio. Observatory Mound and the entire
earthworks complex will provide a perfect setting to conclude the walk as well as
allowing public access to a potential World Heritage site. It will also be a great way to
publicize the Ohio Historical Society’s Octagon Open House the following Sunday,
October 18, 2009. OHS has made arrangements with MCC for public access on both
Friday evening, October 16, and Sunday, October 18.

The Concluding Ceremony for the entire series of programs will be part of the Open
House on October 18.

You and the staff of Newark Earthworks Center should be proud of your
accomplishments in regard to Newark Earthworks Day and the upcoming events. If you
are in need of further assistance, please free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Erin G. Bartlett
