Volume 23, Issue 7 March 2010
From the Principal’s Pen
Aurora High School
It has been a snowy and dreary February, but many of our students at
Mr. Pat Ciccantelli Aurora High School have continued to stay busy and shine. We took
Principal over 100 juniors to New York City and nearly 80 sophomores to
Chicago for their class trips. It was a tremendous opportunity and a
great experience for these young adults! Students in the art and music
Mr. Mike Roberto programs have had their efforts judged in their respective competitions
Asst. Principal and we had many students recognized for their tremendous skills. Our
Quiz Bowl team earned the title of Portage County champions for the
fifth year in a row, Congratulations! Two AHS divers qualified and
Administration performed exceptionally well at the recent state meet; Hunter Flagg
finished 16th and Chris Riley finished 4th at the OHSAA meet. Also,
Mr. Russ Bennett four Aurora wrestlers qualified for the OHSAA state tournament; good-
Superintendent luck to Ryan Cash, Ty Mitch, Tom Gallagher and Danny
McNamara.
Dr. Alicia Lopez Many of our students received recognition this past month for their
Academic Director accomplishments at AHS. A round of applause to Mary Beth Pavlick
and George Kimson for being selected as our Rotary students of the
month for February. We want to recognize and congratulate George
Kimson for being chosen as the Plain Dealer “Senior Standout” student
Board of Education

SPANISH CLUB
On Saturday, February 20th, 15 Spanish club members went to Cleveland’s
Playhouse Square. There the students watched the incredible, Tony award winning
performance of “In The Heights”.
“In The Heights” is an exhilarating journey into a vibrant Manhattan community-a
place where the coffee is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and a breeze
carries the rhythm of three generations of music. This very hip show includes
dancing, singing, rapping, salsa, meringue, and Spanish and English. The students
really enjoyed the cultural event outside of the school.
Ski Club
Don’t forget! Just because we skied for the last time as a group, any
member of the AHS ski club can ski for the rest of the season on Friday,
from 3:00 – 7:30 PM for free, including rentals. So, continue to enjoy
winter by skiing at Brandywine until the snow melts this spring!

OMEA Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event
Band students in 9th through 12th grade participated in this OMEA event on Saturday,
February 13, 2010 at Crestwood High School. High school students from district VI (Summit,
Portage and Medina counties) participated in this prestigious event.
Students were required to prepare a piece of music and several scales to be performed for a
judge selected by the OMEA state board. Based on the student’s performance, the adjudicator
gave each performer or ensemble a rating of I-V and several instructional comments. Directors
agree that although it is nice to see a student score well, the true value in this event is in the
experience and adjudicator’s comments.
The ratings are determined as follows:
I. Rating I – (Superior) An outstanding performance, with very few technical errors and
exemplifying a truly musical expression. This rating should be reserved for the truly
outstanding performance.
II. Rating II – (Excellent) An unusual performance in many respects, but not worthy of the highest
rating due to minor defects in performance, ineffective interpretation or improper
instrumentation.
III. Rating III – (Good) An acceptable performance but not outstanding. Showing accomplishment
and marked promise, but lacking one or more essential qualities.
IV. Rating IV – (Poor) A poor performance showing many technical errors, poor musical
conception, lack of interpretation, incomplete instrumentation, or lacking in any of the other
essential qualities.
V. Rating V – (Very Poor) A very poor performance indicating deficiencies in most of the
essential factors.
The following band students participated in OMEA Adjudicated event:
Name Grade Instrument Rating Class
Brian Katona 11 Piano II A
Alex Hayes 12 Snare Drum I A
Alex Hayes 12 Marimba I A
All students prepared well, and performed wonderfully. Aurora should be very proud of the
accomplishments of these students. We should also be thankful for the wonderful support from the
parents involved with the Aurora Band Boosters. The boosters assisted in paying the entrance fees
for all of the students. Private teachers also provide the necessary support and instruction that help
to make these students successful. Congratulations!
