Sollemnitas Sancti Francisci
The current crisis may be to us a call of the Spirit, "a time of grace", to change our view of the world and become more
supportive. For this reason it cannot leave us indifferent, but must trigger in us, both in our local and provincial
fraternities, a demanding assessment of our way of life, of the effective implementation of the sine proprio, the economic
organization of our institutions, and our ability to share with the poor and the marginalized. (Letter of the Minister
General and Definitory for the Feast of St. Francis, 2012)
The Year of Faith
With the Apostolic Letter, Porta fidei, of October 11, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI announced the Year of Faith. It will begin
on October 11, 2012, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, and will end on November 24, 2013, on
the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. To be informed about all the events, a website has been set up in Italian,
English, Spanish, French, German, and Polish at www.annusfidei.va.

Alegre from September 3-7, 2012, for the Ordinary Assembly presided by the President, Br. João Inácio Müller, and with
the participation of Definitor General, Br. Nestor Schwerz. After much thought, with the help of the General Definitor, the
recent letter of the Minister General for the Feast of St. Clare discussed about encouraging some areas and services of the
Conference, such as the Secretariat for the Missions and Evangelization (Amazonian Project, the 3rd meeting of young
people in 2014, the 2nd Latin American Missionary Congress, etc.), the Secretariat for Formation and Studies (Course for
Formation and Guardians, pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Under Ten); the Treasurer (3 rd Meeting of Bursars of the
Conference, the formulation of a handbook for Treasures/Bursars). In addition, the Ministers addressed other issues, such
as the Requena mission, World Youth Day slated for March 4-8, 2013, in Penedo in Rio in 2013, and the decision to
publish the latest documents of the Order.

Regula et vita Minorum Fratrum haec est, scilicet Domini nostri Jesu Christi sanctum Evangelium observare (RB I,1) 1
elevated by Pope Benedict XVI to the altars, is remembered for the three great loves of his life: the Church, Sacred
Scripture, and the Order of Friars Minor. He devoted his life to the Chinese translation of the entire Bible from both the
Greek and Latin texts. He witnessed the love of Christ in the formation of young religious in preaching, spiritual direction,
and caring for the lepers. John Paul II called him "a man of dialogue between Christ and China." For more information, go
Italy - Assembly of OFM Definitors of Northern Italy
The Definitors of the current six Provinces in northern Italy met with Br. Vincenzo Brocanelli, the Italian Definitor
General, for their traditional summer meeting from August 20 to 24 to recap the common path trodden this past year and
to plan ahead. This meeting was particularly important because the six Provinces are approaching the aligned Provincial
Chapters in 2013 (with a joint Instrumentum Laboris) to enter the last three years before amalgamating into one new
Province in 2016.
The path being trodden is proving to be more and more concrete and shared; there is a remarkable convergence on
choices, despite the different histories and traditions. There is an increasing awareness of moving forward, not only to
create a new thing, but above all to do so in a new way - "non nova sed nove" -. The priority is to add quality to the life of
the Friars Minor in northern Italy in order to continue to have something meaningful to say to our times and people. This
will lead to invest in a new fraternity - as early as next year. It will be laborious but necessary in order to restructure the
Then, the reflection on initial formation was fundamental; yet, it did not seem quite to respond suitably to the candidates
who apply to join our family. It was discussed that one must operate within and beyond the institutional phases of
Postulancy and Novitiate. With some possible founded exceptions, the usual time of two years to reach first profession is
no longer sufficient. However, this doesn’t mean that the time should be prolonged either, but filled in so that the
candidates may have a deeper experience of the fundamental dynamics of the life and identity of the Friar Minor. Lastly,
the decisions related to the unification of our provincial economies have also become more concrete. More importantly
still, is the realization that we still need to mature a common vision on the management and use of our assets.
Graz, Austria – Symposium in the Franciscan Convent
From October 12 to 13, 2012, a Symposium will be held at the Franciscan Convent of Graz, with the aim of raising
awareness of the Franciscan philosophical and theological thought on creation and the environmental projects in the
region. This Franciscan thought, of course, comes from the experience of Francis’ relationship with created things. It is a
unique relationship that merited him the honor of being Patron of Ecology, a challenge that we, too, must follow. Finally,
a meeting of prayer for peace, promoted by various religious communities in the cloister of the Convent of Graz, will once
again take place on October 11. Download the program here.

Official Logo of the Franciscan Presence at World Youth Day
In preparation for the Franciscan presence at World Youth Day, which will take place next year in July in Rio de Janeiro,
we present the chosen logo, so that it may be a visible identity of the Franciscans during this youth gathering. Our
intention is that all young people from parishes and Franciscan Fraternity, once arrived in Rio de Janeiro may identify
themselves with this logo, which will be used by all the Orders and Franciscan Congregations as the Official symbol of
World Youth Day. Therefore, we ask everyone to use the logo and let it reach all the young people who participate in
World Youth Day. They may, likewise, disseminate it and reproduce it freely with all the means of communication:

Clare Saints and Blessed, not just the well-known, but also the lesser-known. All are pearls of the spirit of both
Francis and Clare. It also describes the history of the Clarian charism. Finally, the volume contains the Jubilee
letters, the addresses of the Poor Clare monasteries in Poland, the text of the Blessing of St. Clare, and her prayer

England - New Project of Franciscan Spirituality: Desiring to share more deeply the Franciscan charism with
the young people, the Friars of the English Province and the FMM sisters have started a new collaboration project
in Cold Ash, in South East England. The focus is particularly on retreats with young people and sacramental
catechesis; but it also welcomes adults, the SFO, and other groups. Their vision is as follows: While centered on
their relationship with God as a community of Franciscan brothers and sisters, they wish to offer young people a
welcoming place where they can discover a God of love both in their lives and in the beauty of creation. This
expresses their willingness to walk with young people and help them to appreciate something of the depth of
God's love for them. It is a challenging ministry, but extremely satisfactory and effective. They have a good
balance between catechesis, prayer, and fun, so that the young people who attend their retreats usually go away
with a new founded quality in their relationship with God and with each other. They are also developing a small
farm where guests can interact with animals and appreciate the love of God manifested in the created world. They
also started an effort to bring their animals to schools and colleges and share with young people their Franciscan
vision of creation and community.
The present community is made up of Br. Danny Convery, OFM, Br. Anthony Jukes, OFM, Sr. Helen Fennell
FMM, Sr. Roisin Hickey, FMM, and Sr. Rosalie N'Deh FMM. Their work is growing and is in need of more
people to help build their community and mission. For this reason, they would like to invite another Friar to join
their community for at least one year; he can be either in solemn profession or in initial formation, or even
perhaps someone who wants to improve the use of the English language. It would be ideal if it were someone
who loves working with young people and be surrounded by the beauty of God's creation. For more information
