Purpose of Communication: Click here and type (this should serve as a brief executive
summary of the paper; for example 'Departments across the University have operated peer
observation of teaching schemes for many years. A recent survey demonstrated that all but
one department had such schemes, but that there was significant variation in the approach
taken by different departments. Taking as its starting point the proposition that peer
observation is a key mechanism to support quality enchancment, this paper proposes the
establishment of University guidelines that would address the issue of variability while
retaining sufficient flexibility to allow departmental peer observation schemes to be tailored
to meet subject-specific needs and thereby ensure local ownership of these schemes')
