Shaped by the past, creating the future NAME OF COMMITTEE/SUB-COMMITTEE IN BOLD CAPITALS (e.g. EDUCATION COMMITTEE/ADMISSIONS SUB-COMMITTEE/QUALITY AND STANDARDS SUB- COMMITTEE/STUDENT EXPERIENCE SUB-COMMITTEE/FACULTY EDUCATION COMMITTEE Communication Title: Click here and type Purpose of Communication: Click here and type (this should serve as a brief executive summary of the paper; for example 'Departments across the University have operated peer observation of teaching schemes for many years. A recent survey demonstrated that all but one department had such schemes, but that there was significant variation in the approach taken by different departments. Taking as its starting point the proposition that peer observation is a key mechanism to support quality enchancment, this paper proposes the establishment of University guidelines that would address the issue of variability while retaining sufficient flexibility to allow departmental peer observation schemes to be tailored to meet subject-specific needs and thereby ensure local ownership of these schemes') Consultation to date: Click here and type (this should summarise any consultation carried out prior to submission to the committee; for example 'These proposals were subject to consultation with departments through meetings of FECs held earlier this term. Minute extracts detailing the comments at FECs are attached as an annex to this paper, and the detailed proposals have been amended to take account of the feedback received from departments at FCs. The proposals were also discussed at QSSC prior to their submission to EC, and were fully endorsed by the Sub-Committee') Action Requested: Click here and type (this should summarise the action the committee is being asked to take. Sometimes it will be possible to do this in detail on the paper (for example 'EC is asked to consider whether to recommend the revised policy to Senate'); on other occasions the detail and complexity of the requested action may be such that it is difficult to summarise and it may be more appropriate to insert a cross reference to the main paper (for example 'EC is asked to consider the recommendations detailed in paragraphs 9 and 10') Deadline for action/response required: Click here and type (e.g. 'Oral responses at the meeting meeting of EC on 1 July 2008') Contact for further information: Click here and type (this will usually be the author(s) of the paper) C:\Docstoc\Working\pdf\18155e5a-24f0-45e2-ad05-7f5b4f76689a.doc
