PROGRAM: MENTAL HEALTH & ADDICTIONS
TYPE: PERMANENT FULL TIME
Reporting to the Manager, Child & Youth Mental Health and Addictions Program, the Social Worker functions
as a member of both the AVRSB Schools Plus team and the AVH Child & Youth MH/AS team. This position
will support the Schools Plus team with Mental Health related areas of concern with primary responsibility to
work within the Schools Plus model and to refer to the formal mental health system as indicated. The Social
Worker will provide early identification and intervention, brief therapy, liaison with school personnel and group
interventions. This position will also connect with C&Y MH/AS team for professional development
opportunities, case reviews, mentoring and supervision.
The Social Worker ensures that the principles and practices that guide AVH such as the mission, vision, values,
expected behaviours, the leadership philosophy, organizational health, population health, ethics, safety, quality,
partnerships and interprofessional collaboration are integrated within the services they provide and through the
messages they deliver.
Master of Social Work
Registered with the Nova Scotia Association of Social Work
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Competence in assessment, intervention (individual, family, and group) and research
Specialized knowledge of acute and persistent mental illness, systems theory, ethics and standards
Working knowledge of the DSM IV-TR
Working knowledge of health promotion and communities resources/development
Motivated with a strong customer service orientation building solid health care client/partner
Demonstrated ability to synthesize information, problem solve and utilize good judgment in decision
Demonstrated planning, organizational and time management skills
Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement initiatives and evidence based practice
Commitment to promoting a culture that supports safety, ethical practices and organizational health
Demonstrated attention to detail
Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Demonstrated good attendance in current and past employment

Physical capabilities to perform the duties of the position
Travel is required and may be across the district
PREFERRED (Considered an Asset):
Practicum training or experience in the child and youth mental health outpatient field is an asset
Ability to communicate in both French & English.
