POLICY

Field trips are scheduled throughout the year to enhance children’s learning experiences in all domains of
the Child Outcomes Framework, to familiarize them with their community, and to form a foundation for
school readiness.

PROCEDURE

    1. Teaching team plans field trips with parental input using the Field Trip Schedule and submits it
three weeks in advance to the supervisor for approval.
    2. Teacher ensures that field trips do not exceed 2 1/2 hours including travel time and are planned
        between meal times.
    3. Bus Driver assists the team during the children’s participation and ensures that all bus rules and
        regulations are followed.
    4. Children ride the bus to and from the field trip site unless self-transported by parent/guardian due
to special arrangements approved by supervisor.
    5. For those children who ride the bus to the site, the parent/guardian may check out the child by
signing the Child Release Form prior to leaving the field trip site.
    6. Teacher or Teacher Assistant rides the bus with the Bus/Classroom Assistant to assist with the
        children.
    7. Developmentally appropriate field trips are chosen within the children’s local community to
        enhance awareness of their environment.
    8. Additional snacks and drinking water are provided for children when the weather is warm.
    9. Staff visits the site and checks the route before taking the children.
    10. Parents need to be notified in advance, a note needs to be left on the classroom door, and the
office needs to be notified when the field trip begins and notified when the classroom safely
        returns.
    11. Staff needs to take a cell phone, first aid kit (fanny pack and blood cleaning kit), emergency
forms, teacher action protocols and any children’s medication on all field trips; bussed and
        walking.
    12. Walking Field Trips
        a. All walking field trips must be planned with the safety of children in mind: Children may only
walk next to two-lane roads which are 40 mph or less, that provide a sidewalk or sufficiently
wide shoulders with a crosswalk when crossing the street.
        b. Child/adult ratio must be a maximum of four children to one adult.
        c. Staff follows same approval procedures as regular field trips.
        d. For walking field trips at contained sites such as Umpqua Community College there may be a
maximum of 5 children to one adult. When the group reaches their ultimate destination on
campus if it is a contained area such as Jacoby or inside the fence at the track then the extra
person may leave until time to walk back with the class. For these on campus field trips

parents do not need to be notified ahead of time as long as someone at the site can direct
parents to where their child is at. The H.S administrative office still needs to be notified of the
classrooms whereabouts and a sign on the classroom door.
