Toxicology
COMPANY: AquaTox Testing & Consulting Inc.

LOCATION: Guelph, Ontario (Laboratory not accessible by public transportation; candidates must
have reliable transportation and valid driver’s license)

STATUS: Full-time; the successful candidate will be eligible for our benefits package, which

DESCRIPTION
An opportunity exists for a Senior Laboratory Technician in our Aquatic Toxicology Laboratory. As
a Senior Laboratory Technician, you will also act as a backup and assistant to our Laboratory
Manager. As the successful applicant, you will contribute to our success through your scientific
knowledge, initiative, organizational and interpersonal skills.

As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for, or participate in:

 Performing technical activities related to the culturing and holding of fish, plants and
  invertebrates
 Performing technical activities related to the testing of water, effluent and wastewater samples,
  chemicals, sediments, and leachates/elutriates with fish, aquatic invertebrates and plants
  including sample log-in, preparation, testing, data entry, data analysis and interpretation
 Performing tasks related to general housekeeping practices
 Conducting measurement of routine water quality parameters, and collection of samples for
  submission to outside analytical laboratories
 Performing activities related to studies conducted under OECD principles of Good Laboratory
  Practice (GLP)
 Assisting in the development and implementation of new culture and test methods
 Preparing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures
 Assisting with the design, implementation and management of aquatic toxicity based studies,
  with effluents, wastewaters, chemicals and sediments
 Assisting with day-to-day laboratory operations related to staff utilization and workload
  management, scheduling, test completion, staff mentoring and training, development of new test
  systems
 Participating in the laboratory QA/QC program
 Assisting with staff performance reviews
 Participating in workload management meetings with technical staff and project managers

QUALIFICATIONS
This position will be of interest to those with a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Environmental or Aquatic
Toxicology, or other closely related discipline. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge
of aquatic toxicology theory and practical application. Applied experience (minimum 5 years) in a
laboratory (private or government), consulting or related professional setting will be considered an
asset.

The successful candidate should be familiar (and preferably have hands-on experience) with a
variety of aquatic toxicity test methods, including Environment Canada, OECD, ASTM and US EPA

guidelines. An understanding of Canadian provincial and federal regulatory requirements for
aquatic toxicity testing is also required.

Demonstrated technical and scientific writing is a must for this position, along with strong inter-
personnel and communication skills, and leadership/decision-making abilities.
