Friday, March 30, 2007 09:30am - 10:30am Brule (Level 5) (Continued) Breakout Session (G1) “ICCP Certification: A Professional Distinction” Lynn McKell, Ph.D. ICCP Education Foundation Certification is a powerful external independent verification of a person's skill and capability. Similar to the CPA for accountants, the ACP and CCP designations denote a person of professional status in the computing industry, and are honored by significant corporations and government agencies throughout the world; for this reason, it is a great way to get a competitive edge in the job market. This presentation will help people understand why certification is important and how to get certified - including various examination options available during the AITP National Collegiate Conference. Breakout Session (T1a) “Applying New Technologies to New Applications” James Fogal SerfzUp.com This session will focus on Marketing New Information Technology and the Information Technology Professional. We will discuss the reasons for a product that's "better" technically, to do worse in the market place than products that are "worse in the technology. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. We have capabilities today that go much further than what the market is ready for. In this track we will examine the concepts of moving forward in your career as a "Corporate" IT Professional, Entrepreneur, and as a technology scientist. Today's technology professional needs to understand the differences in each of these career paths and the reasons that, while one technology is perfect for the first path, it has no business on one of the others. Breakout Session (T1b) “Transforming Government through Technology!” Phillip Bertolini Oakland County, Michigan USA Oakland County, Michigan, under the leadership of County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, has a vision of how to enable efficient government operations through the effective use of technology. Local governments in Michigan have seen their revenue decline over recent years while the requirement for government services has grown. The lack of revenue has created an opportunity to streamline government and provide the increased services. Technology, mainly E-Government technologies, has enabled this effort. This presentation will focus on the value benefit derived from E-Government services with a segment devoted to the Wireless Oakland initiative. Wireless Oakland will provide free internet services to all 1.2 million residents and the 300,000 visitors that commute daily into the county. This initiative will also provide a "Digital Inclusion" component that will deliver no cost or low cost PCs and training to the underserved populations, i.e. low income and lower levels of education. This presentation will include actual case studies as well as experience data for E-Government and Wireless Oakland. 09:30am 10:30am Cabot (Level 4) 09:30am 10:30am Cartier (Level 4) Session - 5 2007 AITP National Collegiate Conference Conference Events & Sessions Subject to Change-All sessions are at the Detroit Marriott unless otherwise indicated! If you've dreamed about how cool it is to work in games, here's a chance to learn how to break in. Breakout Session (T2) “Tailored Therapeutics: Getting it Right for the Patient” Crystal Haswell Eli Lilly Currently, contemporary pharmaceutical products provide efficacy in only approximately 50% of the patients for whom they are prescribed. In addition, just in the US, approximately 100,000 people die each year from adverse reactions to prescription drugs. These statistics are driving the Tailored Therapeutics strategy at Lilly. The Drug Metabolizing/Enzyme Transporter (DMET) Chip is a cutting-edge collaboration between Lilly and Affymetrix to respond to the needs of Tailored Therapeutics. The DMET Chip technology allows investigators running clinical trials to better predict which patients will respond to a drug and which patients may experience an adverse reaction. Additionally, use of Tablet PCs and the Sales Force will also be discussed. 11:00am - 12noon Cartier (Level 4) 11:00am - 12noon Cabot (Level 4) Session - 6 2007 AITP National Collegiate Conference Conference Events & Sessions Subject to Change-All sessions are at the Detroit Marriott unless otherwise indicated! Teaching computer programming skills to students with little to no computer programming experience at a distance or hybrid modality is a difficult instructional problem. Computer programming courses already have an estimated 40% failure rate according to national studies. These disturbing numbers, coupled with the already lower than average distance learning course retention rates (as compared to face-to-face), make for a recipe for disaster without carefully planned instruction. Given that online and hybrid courses are gaining momentum in institutions of higher education, computing educators are forced to develop ways to deliver computer programming instruction using non-traditional methods. Yet, few best practices and limited research is available to aid faculty in this process. Consequently, this presentation will present pedagogical strategies and instructional technology to equip our faculty to teach with non-traditional methods and present research on a programming course under investigation for three years. This presentation is geared for faculty currently teaching or planning to teach computer programming online or hybrid modality. Breakout Session (V5a) “Visual Communications: What is It?” Richard Kraas Kalamazoo Valley Community College With the digital capabilities of computers expanding, graphics, animation and Web technologies are being combined to offer an entirely new medium to convey ideas less dependant on time and space than the past. All one has to do is turn on the Military History channel or a sports broadcast to see animation being used to describe or explain battles or plays. It is now possible for an engineer in Frankfurt Germany to use 3D animation and Web technologies to describe a new product to a production manager in Toledo OH. Even better, the production manager can use the animation features to rotate their views and even pull off sections to gain a complete understanding of the product to be produced without actually seeing the prototype. Marketers can use the same technology with focus groups to gain an idea of consumer acceptance prior to the expense of a test marketing effort. 08:30am - 04:00pm Ontario East (3) 08:30am - 10:00am Cabot (Level 4) 08:30am 10:00am Cartier (Level 4) Session - 10 2007 AITP National Collegiate Conference Conference Events & Sessions Subject to Change-All sessions are at the Detroit Marriott unless otherwise indicated!
