					                                 GENERIC JOB SUMMARY
JOB TITLE: Senior Research Fellow                                                      GRADE Ac3
JOB PURPOSE: To initiate, develop and manage high level research projects in line with the School’s
research strategy.
MAIN ACTIVITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following describes the type of work that is typically required of research staff at this level. It is not
expected that anyone carries out all the activities mentioned below and some carry out additional duties.
1. Research
     Develop the research activities of the School by sustaining a personal research plan by
      managing and undertaking research activities in accordance with a specific project plan in the
      appropriate research team.
    Sustain a high quality publication record by publishing in refereed journals and presenting at
      conferences.
    Develop research proposals and funding bids in collaboration with others.
    Negotiate and secure funding contracts in research specialism to support self (and possibly a
      group of colleagues).
    Within research project, take the lead in setting research objectives and programme of
      implementation.
    Direct, coach and develop research staff, where appropriate.
    Ensure that research projects are completed on time and within budget.
2 . Teaching
    Contribute to the work of the School through limited teaching and associated tasks within own
     research specialism.
    Be responsible for practical work where applicable, and advise students on techniques.
3. Administration/Contribution to Community
      Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy by developing external links.
      Develop links with relevant research groups, industries and external bodies to encourage
       technology transfer opportunities and create opportunities for future research projects.

    Carry out designated administrative duties.
PLANNING AND ORGANISING:
    Plan for and set research objectives over a number of years.
    Plan for the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate.
    Prepare research proposals for submission for external funding.
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES ((e.g. finance, people, equipment, etc.):
    Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development.
    Supervise the work of others, for example in research teams and projects.
    Manage own research, teaching and administrative demands under general supervision of Head.
    Assist in the development of skills and competence in others (for example through the
      supervision of research students).
    Monitor and ensure effective management of assets and budgets allocated as part of the role.
    Participate in judgements regarding the use of resources within their research project/school.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:
    Supervise research projects of undergraduate and post graduate students.
    Member of the School Board and such committees relevant to their administrative or teaching
      duties.
    Collaborate with other staff within School.
    Participate in and develop external networks, for example to identify sources of funding, generate
      income, obtain consultancy projects, or build relationships for future activities.
