									                  Mandatory College Application Essays

Please describe which of your activities, (extracurricular and personal activities or work experience) has
been most meaningful and why.

The personal statement helps the colleges become acquainted with you in ways different from courses,
grades, test scores, and other objective data. It will demonstrate your ability to organize thoughts and
express yourself. The colleges look for an essay that will help them to know you better as a person and
as a student. You will be writing two 500 word essays, one essay for each topic listed below.

1. Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have
faced and its impact on you. (500 words)

2. Is there anything you would like us to know about you or your academic record that you
have not had the opportunity to describe elsewhere on your application? (this question is one of
three questions you must respond to on the University of California application. This question gives
students the opportunity to share important aspect of their lives, such as personal circumstances, family
experiences and opportunities that were or were not available to them. (500 words)

In writing your Personal Statement, you may find it helpful to examine samples written by other
students. Distinguish yourself from other people. What makes you unique? Be yourself, the essay
should be about you. Discuss a learning experience from your life. Write about real things that actually
happened. Be positive and upbeat. Keep your essay simple, tasteful and easy to read. Use
proper grammar. Get to the point and do not go beyond the 500-word limit. Demonstrate self-
confidence. Upon request, English teachers and guidance counselors will be available to proof read
our students college essays.
