General Information
The MCA youth group is planning a bicycle ride for high school students (entering 9th grade fall
2012 through graduating high school spring 2012) from Mount McKinley to Anchorage to raise
money for missions this summer. Our ride will take place July 16-22. The goal is to raise
$20,000 to assist missionaries around the world, by giving them much needed equipment,
through a program called Speed the Light and to participate in MCA missions.

Just to make it interesting, incentives will be given to the students with the 3 highest pledged
                                  amounts (over $1000) as follows:

       1st Place: A new iPad
2nd Place: $100 iTunes card or scholarship to Alaska Youth Conference (Oct 25-27)
        rd
       3 Place: $50 iTunes card
Pledge amounts will be totaled and incentives given based on recorded pledge totals
as of Sunday, July 22 at noon

In order to participate in Speed the Bike you must:

       1. Complete the Medical Questionnaire/Authorization Form.
       2. Complete the Parental Consent/Assumption of Risk Form.
       3. Attend the required number of training sessions.
       4. Ride an additional 20 miles per week and complete Personal Training Form.
       5. Raise a minimum of $1000 in pledges.
       6. Submit entry fee of $200 (Sponsor’s exempt)
               * Student rider’s entry fee is $100 if student raises $1500 or more in pledges
               * Student rider’s entry fee is waived if student raises $2000 or more in pledges
       7. Have a parent/guardian attend meeting on Wednesday, May 16 at 6pm (or meet
               separately with Pastor Howard).
       8. Have a parent/guardian attend parental meeting Thursday, July 12 at 6:45pm

Since safety for you and your fellow riders is our primary concern, anyone involved in unsafe
procedures will be reprimanded according to severity of infraction which may include immediate
termination of participation in this event. If student is not allowed to continue it will be the
parent’s responsibility to pick student up from where the group is and transport student home.
Helmets and vests are required for all riders at all times (practice rides and the trip itself).

Come prepared to share yourself! There will be many opportunities to make new friends and
share in devotional and discussion sessions.

Rules of the Road
1. Stretching out. Because we will never make this trip without healthy muscles,
"Stretching out" prior to riding will be mandatory. We will stretch out at all stops and
breaks as muscles tend to tighten up quickly. Taking care of our muscles will make the
     trip much more enjoyable.

2. Safety vest. The vest provided for you is designed to make you visible to drivers. Vests
will be worn at all times while riding during training and on the trip.

3. Single File Riding:
     a) We will ride single file as far to the right as is safely possible.
     b) When there is no shoulder we will track the white line.
     c) Always pay attention to the rider in front of you. Never ride continuously with
            your head down.

4. Ride in Groups:

     a) We will have two levels of riding ability in our group: Fast and Moderately Fast.
     b) If you start out in one group and you find that you need a change of pace, you may
change groups only when the other group is within eyesight and you have
obtained permission from an adult staff member.
     c) You may also change groups at the end of a meal time or at the beginning of each
            day.

                                                                                          Page 5
Rules of the Road (con't)
5. Passing and Road Hazards.
      a) To pass:
              i) Notify the biker ahead of your intention to
pass by calling out to him or her
ii) As he/she pulls over to the right, pass on the
left. This will help you avoid pulling into the
                       roadway.
      b) Passing is not allowed for any reason when there is
              road traffic.
      c) It is the responsibility of the lead riders to point out
or signal road hazards (chuck holes, pavement
breaks, rocks, glass, etc.) Each rider behind the
leader must then alert those who follow with the
same signal to insure the safety of everyone
              involved.
      d) To avoid road hazards:
              i) Look over your shoulder and check traffic.
ii) If clear, signal a left hand turn and detour
                       around hazard.
iii) When dismounting bike, rider must be
                       completely off the roadway.
6. Remember, this is not a race. Never attempt to out pedal
another biker to camp or to any other destination. Follow
the rules of passing listed under point 5.

7. All rules of the road are to be obeyed (both written and
       verbal).

                                                                         Page 6
Tips for Finding Sponsors
1. Mom and Dad - always a good source, especially if you are in their good graces!!

2. Grandparents - a sure thing.

3. Relatives are good supporters. Call or write them, whether they live in or out of state.

4. Go to your employer and co-workers. They might be interested in knowing what you are
going to do during your time off. It could also be a great way to open the door for
   witnessing.

5. Your family address book is a gold mine!! All you have to do is send potential sponsors a
letter explaining the Speed the Bike event.

6. Neighbors. Go out and see... "Who are the people in your neighborhood." It is a great way
to meet your neighbors. Not just the one next door, but the whole block.

7. People with whom you do business... drug store, service station, grocery store, or any place
you spend money regularly and are acquainted with the people. Consider a sponsor
shirt/jersey. Let them know that you would love to wear their name on your back. Just
think...you could make everyone riding behind you dream of pizza all day.

8. School and church friends- almost anyone can come up with $10.

9. Your teachers. They like to hear from their former students, especially when it involves you
   doing something good.

10. Pastor Howard & Rezia are available to help you with ideas and suggestions – just ask!

Please turn in any cash or checks received to
Pastor Howard or Rezia weekly with list of who pledges are from

Remember: You are raising money to
help spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Ask the Lord to help you and to guide
you. People will be more likely to pledge
money in support of someone who looks
and acts respectable. Always be polite
and courteous and don't forget to smile!
Always thank people you ask to sponsor
you (whether they sponsor you or not).
                                                                                              Page 7
