The Benefits of Music with the
Person with Dementia:
How Music Supports Personhood
Have you ever wondered how a dementia client’s needs could be better met and how they could
have a higher quality of life? Or, maybe you have struggled to “connect” with him/her? In this
workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn how the modality of music can provide benefits in all
of the areas of functioning affected by dementia, including the following:
The Brain/Cognition Emotional Health
Physical Health Spirituality
Basic Daily Functioning Personal Identity
Family & Social Life
When combined, these elements will help you to better understand your clients as individuals and to
see how music can help to bring out the “hidden person” in the client with dementia. Interactive
musical experiences will also be included throughout the day.
PRESENTER: Rebecca McCue, MT-BC, has worked as a Music Therapist at Piedmont Geriatric
Hospital for more than five years. She is board certified in music therapy and completed her bachelor’s
degree in music therapy at Ohio University. Ms. McCue interned at Hospice of Cincinnati and
Beechwood Home, working with hospice patients and with adults with neurological impairments.
